West Seattle Thanksgiving: Here’s who needs turkeys

Our previous report listed free dinners in West Seattle on Thanksgiving. Now, here’s YOUR chance to help people in need. Two local food banks are accepting turkeys and other food donations this weekend. First, from the West Seattle Food Bank:

Frozen turkeys and other food donations will be gratefully accepted at the West Seattle Food Bank on Saturday from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM and on Monday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Pull into our parking garage off Morgan St. just east of 35th Ave. SW [map]. Contact us at 206-932-9023 for additional hours for donations on site.

Also, donations can be accepted during the Turkey Bowl on Saturday from 5:30 PM-8:00 PM at West Seattle Bowl, 4505 39th Ave. SW.

We published the White Center Food Bank turkey-drive announcement earlier; they’re requesting frozen turkeys and chickens this Saturday, 9 am-7 pm, at their HQ, 10829 8th SW [map]. Here’s our original announcement, which also includes contact information if you want to find out about other dropoff hours.

Have you heard if anyone needs seasonal volunteers?

    • WSB November 17, 2011 (6:25 pm)

The White Center Food Bank link includes a request for volunteers. Our earlier story about the Thanksgiving dinners includes one that needs volunteers. And I’ll be posting WestSide Baby’s wish list later tonight or first thing tomorrow – I suspect they’ll include some volunteer requests.

I just saw that story after I posted. Missed it first time around somehow. Thank you!

Always appreciate this post the past couple of years; serves as a reminder! Helps to plan shopping and buying for these worthy banks.

Thanks, OP. When the Holidays page is up, it will also include a section pointing to these various needs. I so appreciate the folks who have actually messaged us asking where and how to help!!!

Let’s also not forget to buy food for our nieghbors that may eat other types of food besides the traditional thanksgiving feast. We live in a very diverse community and we should remember the foods that may help our nighbors feel more at home.

Cross-posting from another thread, just in case someone can use it!

Have you done your grocery shopping yet this week? For the turkey drives – if you spend $150 in one transaction (excluding alcohol and the cost of the turkey, read the fine print!), you can get a free frozen turkey at Safeway and bring it to one of the groups collecting them. Maybe get your own turkey (which WOULD be counted toward the $150) and give the free one to someone who needs it. We got a nearly 19lb. bird (worth around $25) last night. And if you’re a true coupon geek ;) you’ll also like getting $10 to use later because you spent more than $75. Win-win! Check store circular, but I’ll try to post link here too.

Yes! Love the post from the coupon-maximizing GenHillOne! Kids and I went to Safeway to take advantage of the deals on turkey and trimmings. Then we took everything, including 3 big turkeys, to the White Center Food Bank. Glad we did because the place was a ghost town today around 1pm, except for the lone person accepting donations, no cars in the big parking lot except ours. They clearly need holiday donors!

Sorry, comment time is over.
