Viaduct updates: ‘Multi-use trail’ opens Monday; July 30-Aug. 1 closure

Big day for transportation news. One more story in the pipe after this, but first, a couple Alaskan Way Viaduct notes: The new “multi-use trail” for bicycles/pedestrians/etc. officially opens Monday morning at 5 am. WSDOT’s announcement has an invitation for people who plan to use it: “Come celebrate with us on the north end of the trail near S. King Street during Monday’s morning and evening commute, 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. We’re looking forward to meeting you!” … Second note, the next scheduled closure is two weeks away, 5:30 pm July 30th through 5 am August 1st, starting with the Seafair Torchlight Run – details here.

Yay! That area has been treacherous for months now, this will be a welcome improvement. I’m also glad to see they’ll be adding traffic lights to help cross the intersection with the terminal entrance!

    Thanks, WSDOT!

Why the quotation marks around Multi-Use Trail? That’s what they’re called (and to be distinguished from dedicated bicycle infrastructure), and I can’t help but read the quotation marks as unexpected editorializing.

It has been very disruptive and unpredictable in the last 6 months. It is often hard to know where they intend to have us ride. I am ready for some predictablility, thanks.

At times I feel like I should be commuting on my full suspension mountain bike rather than my road bike! :-) This morning, got caught AGAIN by that darn train. Can’t wait for the new trail to be opened!

AWESOME!! This looks really great, and I can’t wait to try it out. Now only if it could be extended all the way to West Seattle…

JN, it is, you just need to know where you’re going. I can ride from Alki all the way there without issue. It amazes me when I see cyclists hop into traffic too, there’s a specified bicycle trail that lets cyclists stay out of traffic by the lower bridge when crossing. Too many times I’ve seen cyclists hop into traffic not realizing if they took an extra 30 seconds they’d never have been in traffic, nearly hit by a semi.

Rode it home last night. VERY NICE and much more safe than the previous option.

Hopefully the lights will be turned on soon.

Sorry, comment time is over.
