Too soon to say

Not surprising, but in case you were wondering, Seafair says it’s too soon to say if today’s deadly Blue Angels crash will affect the plan for their annual appearance here (Aug. 4-5). We looked up what happened after the Angels’ last deadly crash, in 1999; looks like they were back in the air pretty quickly that year. On this year’s schedule, they have 16 shows planned between now and Seafair. (Note for any of our fellow geeks out there: not having been to the Seafair site in a while before tonight, we noticed they’ve redesigned in a big way after years with a relatively anemic site.)

I hope they are back up in the air soon and can fly at Seafair. The accident in 1999 did not involve any of the 6 demonstrators so it may be hard to get the team back up this year. I remember seeing the A4 accident in 1985 or 86 on tv but can’t remember if they continued on with their schedule after 1 of the 2 pilots passed away. As everyone probably knows, they are a close team that practices for months before the first show. I would imagine it would be hard to have someone fill number 6’s shoes anytime soon. I’ve been watching these guys almost every year for my 37 years and it feels like a family member has died.

Sorry, comment time is over.
