Restaurant Update

We are finally moving back to West Seattle after a couple of years abroad. A lot has changed since we left. We have read the blog daily to keep informed of the latest and greatest at home. Topics come and go but one thing is clear - People are passionate about good food in West Seattle!

Here's my question that I hope will spark at least a few responses: There are a lot of "new" restaurants. Many experienced some growing pains and many people expressed displeasure but a lot have overcome these negative reviews and I see positive comments. How about a little update on the following?

Zippy's - still great burgers?
Prost! - has it turned into a nice neighborhood pub?
How about the Bohemian? How's the food? Atmosphere?
Brickyard BBQ - did they overcome their initial service and menu problems?
Feedback lounge - is it cool? If one had to pick between that and the Beveridge Place Pub which would be the best choice?
Cafe Revo - any loss of quality since the owner passed on?
Angelina's - is the new format working?
The Swinery - is it as awesome as all the reviews claim or has it lost some of the lustre now that it has been open awhile?
Mashiko - is the sustainability thing working?

We'll be back in a week and can't wait to try EVERYTHING!

WSAA: Why not try them for all for yourself once you get back? I'm sure all of these locally-owned businesses would appreciate you stopping in.

I must say that you even raising the question about Café Revò reads as callous and a bit obtuse. One of the owners, Sofia Zadra Goff, is still very much alive, no doubt working hard to keep her husband's dream alive while raising two small children and trying to get out from under a mountain of medical debt. Incidentally, in a couple of weeks her children will endure their first Christmas without their father.

Sofia Goff and some in her large family live in West Seattle and read the West Seattle Blog. You might consider how you would feel if you were in the same position and discovered that people were talking about whether the food in your restaurant was still good since your spouse died.

Christopherboffoli – how could you possibly know what Sofia Goff does and does not read on the WSB? And for that matter how can you possibly know how she feels?

How about you let those people you presume are offended respond instead of being the WSB Robin Hood, righting the written wrongs with your passive-aggressive posture?

It's all good. I didn't intend to start a fight but I should have been prepared for one as the West Seattle community is so passionate about so many things. I guess being removed from the situation and viewing it only through posts here and there I lost my sense of compassion for the situation. Certainly not intended. Point taken. I do recall similar thoughts when the chef from Ovio died suddenly a few years back. The point is that I am anxiously awaiting the opportunity to visit all the new spots but can't do it in a day so thought maybe some input might help me prioritize.

Perhaps my comment was callous and I regret that but I welcome anyone to call me obtuse anytime, anywhere. I will fly the obtuse flag with honor. You can even call me perpendicular although I prefer horizontal.

Keep up the great photos.

I have been to Cafe Revo before the unfortunate passing of the chef and after and I must say it is just as wonderful.

Hi WSAA, welcome back to WS! Here's my two cents on a couple of places:
Zippy's- yes, still has great burgers. Call your order in before you go.
Feedback is great, tasty drinks and pretty solid food. Can't really compare to the Bev, they've got totally different vibes. The Bev is like your warm and cozy living room but with much better beer, and Feedback is like your Harley-riding crazy rock&roll uncle's living room, but with better cocktails.
Mashiko- Still fabulous, awesome new options with the new sustainable menu. If you're willing to be a little bit adventurous, you probably won't even notice that anything is missing.

re: swinery; the best ever, even after having been open for several months (??). they've opened a food window downtown as well, which is also awesome. The best cuts around, sausages, incredible pate, rillettes, bacon cinnamon rolls, thanksgiving turkey, christmas ham, every time I go into the swinery there's something rad happening. Last time I was there I inadvertently had fudge for breakfast. Bring a set amount of cash and leave wallet at home, charge cards can be dangerous.

Fresh Bistro - Amazing food. All the right stuff. Very much a leader in the restaurant business. Makes for a nice splurge once a month.

Zippy's - Good Burgers, though the meat has a good bit of cartilage in it. Not sure where the meat comes from. Still a great burger and Zippy's is currently doing a Food Bank drive, I believe.

Brickyard BBQ - Good food. A little awkward in the winter. Can't wait for the summer.

Feedback lounge/ Bev Pub - Both Awesome and a great one two punch for Morgan Junction and its new park. Make a night of going to both.

The Swinery - Still awesome. Hard to shop at the supermarket after a quick stop in at the Swinery. Really bringing down the costs of eating swine. Good to see.

Mashiko - The sustainability thing is really helping Moshiko escape the downside of sushi, and seems to be helping the place's marketing. Amazing eats for a very good price. I'm actually not sure I'd want to eat sushi anywhere that didn't pay attention to sustainable fisheries. They must be doing something right.

Marination Mobile - Just voted America's Best Street Food vendor by Good Morning America. The sliders are awesome! (On 35th & Graham, Saturdays)

Zippy's - YES! still great burgers!
Prost - Not enough food variety...pretty much just sausages, always crowded
Bohemian - I really like this place. Extremely nice, enthusiastic, and social management, great food (thank you for adding a lamb burger!), reasonably priced alcohol
Feedback lounge - Feedback has liquor and food, Bev Place is all about the beer. Feedback food hasn't been consistent the few times I've eaten there, although the meatballs were very tasty. The bartenders/owners/staff are all very friendly and happy to chat. I'll keep going back.
Angelina's - tried it once, food was just okay. Accoustics were terrible and the booth bench was not comfortable. I'm only 5'4" and the length of the seat (from bum-to-knee) was too short for me, so really uncomfortable for tall companion.
The Swinery - have only tried the bacon and the bacon bologna - both good.
I second Yardvark's opinion on Fresh and Marination.

call me callous. I am truly sorry for the personal tragedy the family of Cafe Revo has experienced...

but that doesn't change my opinion of the restaurant. The best local review i saw called it a good place to take the kids.. not a gastronomic success... my recent visit did nothing to change that opinion...

nor did my opinion of their food stop me from making a personal donation to the family..

if you loved them before, you will probably still love them.

West Seattle Art Attack..

zippy's .. yes.. i can't say enough positive things about zippys.. even my dogs know that waiting for a zippys burger is a much better option than drive through... and they are very impatient pups.

Bohemian.. that rare blend of atmosphere, good service and good food.. at a price i can afford.

The Swinery.. i second Austin.. leave the charge card at home. you can't possibly consume everything you will purchase before it goes bad if you don't.. and that will make you feel really really bad .. not for the wasted money but because you didn't get to eat every last bite :(

mashikos.. taking the worry out of making choices only enhances the experience

as for the rest of your list..
someone who has been there will have to comment...

tho i second Fresh Bistro which wasn't on your list at all.
