Simple Steps to Prevent and Reverse Prediabetes with Dr. Cheri Wood
Thursday, May 7th at 12:30 pm PST
*recording available for those who can’t make it liveDid you know that 1 in 3 American adults have prediabetes? Prediabetes is an early warning sign that blood sugar and insulin levels are starting to rise, but not yet to the level of type 2 diabetes. Most people don’t realize they have it, as symptoms are often subtle or absent. While it’s commonly attributed to diet and exercise alone, blood sugar imbalance is influenced by many factors, including stress, sleep, hormones, inflammation, and gut health. The good news: prediabetes is often reversible with the right approach. In this Lunch & Learn, we’ll break down what prediabetes is, what’s happening in your body physiologically, and what the research shows about preventing and reversing it. We’ll also explore a whole-person, root-cause approach so you leave feeling informed, empowered, and ready to take the next step. We hope to see you there!

Celebrate spring’s colorful renewal during the Vashon Island Spring Studio Tour, Saturdays and Sundays, May 2-3 & 9-10, 2026, from 10 am to 5 pm each day. The free, self-guided tour is presented by Vashon Island Visual Artists and features 36 studios and galleries. It represents more than 120 artists and craftspeople, many of them demoing their art. The organization’s website offers an interactive online map with details about each studio and gallery. You can also search by artist and medium. Tour locations are spread throughout the island community, from the town center to outlying farms and shores, providing an escape for urban visitors and giving locals the chance to discover tucked-away corners of the island.
Start your tour at the VIVA Tour Info Center & Gallery, located in the heart of town on Vashon Hwy, across from Snap Dragon. The center is designed to enhance each visitor’s experience, from our knowledgeable tour docents to our large interactive map that lets you explore the tour’s locations. The center offers tour brochures, public restrooms, and a mobile phone charging station. The center’s gallery presents the work of four Island artists, including paintings, leather, jewelry, felted pieces, ceramics, and pet portraits. VIVA will hold a First Friday kick-off party for the tour at the Tour Center, May 1, from 5-8 pm, and include a gathering of artists from around the tour.
The VIVA Studio Tour gives visitors the chance to purchase one-of-a-kind gifts in a wide range of price points. You’ll be able to enhance the meaning of the gift by meeting its creator and discovering the story behind the piece. Works range from beautifully functional to decidedly decorative pieces, including oil paintings, ceramics, pastels, blown glass, linocuts, monoprints, acrylics, leather, watercolors, photography, wearable fiber arts, jewelry, basketry, woodwork, stained glass, mosaics, garden art, sculpture, art cards, etched glass, artisan soap, and more.

$20 General advance/ $12 Senior/Student advanceSteeplechase came about in the tried and true manner of Irish music bands throughout the centuries, which is to say, at the session. It became clear that these horses could pull in the same direction, and thus a band was born. Three of the four members have connections to Maine, but they all managed to find their way to the northwest corner of the United States. Hanz Araki (flutes, vocals), Zach Bauman (bouzouki), Sam Vogt (guitar, whistle), and David Lofgren (bodhrán) each have long histories in folk music; and while their paths to taking up traditional music may vary wildly, their passion for, and love of this art form is unquestionably shared.

Grief Support Groups
Grief groups are brave and safe spaces where bereaved people can share their stories and speak their loved one’s name without fear of getting advice, platitudes, or being shut out, no matter how long it’s been since their loved one’s passing. Every participant has dedicated time to speak about whatever they’d like, without judgment or interruption. Talking about our deceased loved ones in a supportive environment helps us remember them fully and helps us learn to carry the weight of their loss a little more gently.
These are ongoing, drop-in groups, but space is limited. Because of the sensitive nature of traumatic loss, the Thursday group is open only for those who are traumatic loss survivors. Learn more and register at listeningtogrief.com/groups. Contact Tamara at tamara@listeningtogrief.com with questions.

Seattle Branch Chair, EB Van Otterloo, will be one of the class instructors. Of Scottish Country Dancing, Van Otterloo says, “There are so many things to love about this form of dance. It’s social, but you don’t need to bring a partner. It’s good exercise for your body and your mind, and most of all, it is such good fun.”
Blaine Peet, who has taught Scottish Country Dancing around the world, will join Van Otterloo in teaching the new class. “Once you have learned the basics, you can dance with people anywhere across the U.S. and Canada, and around the globe. It’s a great way to make new friends in different cultures, no matter whether you are in Europe, Asia or Australia.”
The Seattle Branch has regular social events and runs classes in the U-District, at the Phinney Neighborhood Center and in Edmonds while also promoting classes in Tacoma, Burien and Mount Vernon, among others. More information is available at rscds-seattle.org/classes

Update to previous announcement – this is from Seattle Parks:
Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is hosting an Open House to share an update on the Morgan Junction Park Expansion Schematic Design. Join us on May 13, 2026 from 6 to 7:30 pm, at The Kenney, 7125 Fauntleroy Way SW in West Seattle.
The Open House will provide an opportunity for community members to view the updated schematic design, connect with the project team and learn more about the current phase of the project.
The expansion area is now open to the public for interim use. The site will remain accessible until the start of Phase II construction, when the existing park, additional parcel, and the Eddy Street right-of-way will be closed off for construction.
Following more extensive than anticipated soil work, the project design has been value engineered to align with available funding and site conditions. Permit review and final design are anticipated to continue through fall 2026 with construction anticipated to begin by late summer 2027.
To view the schematic design visit: Morgan Junction Park Addition | Engage Seattle Parks
Seattle Parks and Recreation purchased the 0.47-acre property [in the early 2010s] at 6317 California Ave SW, just north of Morgan Junction Park, to expand the park and provide additional open space for this high-density neighborhood. The project was placed on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic as the City focused on essential services. In September 2022, the Seattle City Council, acting as the Park District Board, approved funding for the project as part of the 2023–2028 Park District cycle.

How America Talks (Differently) About Slavery
R. Charles Weller, Ph.D.
Thursday May 14, 2026 at 6pm via Zoom
REGISTER HERE TO GET THE LINKSince colonial times, religious and political divides have existed over how we talk about American slavery. From the New York Times’s 1619 Project to the Trump administration’s 1776 Report, competing visions of race and slavery embody long-standing tensions between critiquing and celebrating America’s history.
In this talk, explore the ongoing debates about the history of slavery. Hear about the modern tensions in education, politics, religion, and culture that reach beyond the classroom into the public domain, revealing how struggles over historical memory remain central to America’s fractured civic life and national identity.
This talk is part of our America 250 programming series, commemorating the Revolution’s anniversary and exploring legacies from new and surprising perspectives. These talks remind us that the American experiment is still unfolding. Says Dr. R. Charles Weller: “The American experiment is not as a settled triumph but a perilous, unfinished challenge: can a nation built on the democratic ideals of liberty, justice and equality for all survive honest reckoning with its own troubled past? Its fate turns on whether criticism is heard as treason or as one of democracy’s oldest means of self-correction, renewal, and moral growth.”
R. Charles Weller, PhD, is Associate Professor of History (Career), Washington State University, and Senior Research Fellow, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. His work focuses on religious-cultural identity and relations in Western-Asian and world history. Among numerous publications in both English and Kazakh, he is currently working on a four-volume study on how Jewish, Christian, and Islamic sacred law have shaped American national history and identity, particularly with respect to race, slavery, segregation and its Constitutional and national law traditions. He is also working on a related volume titled 1619 vs. 1776: Between Emancipation’s Democratic Promise and Slavery’s Systemic Afterlives.
Charles lives in Redmond.
This talk is presented in partnership with The Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service, which educates citizens across the state about democratic institutions and public affairs, and is based at Washington State University. For more information, visit The Foley Institute’s website.
Words, Writers, Southwest Stories is a free monthly speaker series that highlights local authors, historians, and voices to foster a deeper understanding of our community and its people.
