HelperMonkeyParticipantIn the last couple weeks of walking and driving in the neighborhood I have seen SO MANY people in West Seattle driving along, heads blissfully down in their phones. Old people. young people. It seems like SO MANY so come on, West Seattlites – don’t deny you’re doing it. Just tell me what is SO EFFING IMPORTANT that you’d risk someone’s life. Please. I am dying to know. Maybe the bearded dude in the silver Kia Soul this morning on Fauntleroy could tell me? He could barely manage the speed limit because he was so engrossed in his phone. This was right after the school zone, so I am sure he went thru the zone with his head down, potentially running over children. Nice. Maybe the middle-aged lady in the Toyota Rav4 on Fauntleroy this morning? Maybe the crazy old lady in a Buick SUV on Roxbury last week? Just want to give you all a sincere middle finger, and I hope you all crash your cars into something stationary causing no injuries or damage to anyone but your stupid, selfish selves. I am already grossed out enough by humanity these days and then I see people so selfishly wrapped up in their phones while driving and I think we all truly are doomed. So in short, screw you – every single one of you who drives with phone in hand, eyes not on the road. WE ALL SEE YOU, A-HOLES.

whatupParticipant@HelperMonkey….I agree totally with you ON what is so important, if it is that important you need to pull over and put your car into PARK !

annaeileenParticipantAs I drive around I am amazed as the lack of attention too! So many drivers looking down. It’s constant at stop lights, no one looking up. My assumption is people would say if no one is moving at a stop light it’s safe to look at their phone but so many miss the light change! And what if an emergency happened, these drivers would have no idea. I am sure some will say they are looking up directions or checking traffic but from the amount I see (I run and walk all over West Seattle) it looks like people just checking their phones.
I am far from perfect and just this week I texted stuck in snow traffic in Redmond but we were not moving and I chose to cancel my plans sitting there. So, yes I am part of the problem but that was rare for me. Over the past year as I see more and more inattentive drivers and I have made a point of keeping my phone away. Redmond has signs telling people to not text and drive but you know they can’t see the sign with their faces buried in their phone!

22bladesParticipantGO! The light is GREEN!

JTBParticipantWhile not involving a texting driver, I recently observed a “what the heck” maneuver when a driver made a U-turn at the Glenn Way, 44th Ave, Alaska (SW) convergence. Truly amazing.

Michael WaldoParticipantI am sitting at a light. I look in my rear view mirror.
The man in the car behind me has his Ipad in one hand and he is signing over FaceTime to someone with the other. I was shocked, to be sure.March 3, 2017 at 4:18 am #876013
22bladesParticipantFact: The human brain does not multi-task.

J242ParticipantAgreed! I have a completely hands-free (one button on the steering wheel then voice control) setup and I still don’t like calls in the car. I decline any call other than from my wife if it’s unexpected because that might be an emergency but otherwise, straight to voicemail. I’m in my late 30’s and have been working in the industry as smartphones dominated the market and have never been comfortable answering a phone while I’m already trying to pay attention to the sights and definitely the sounds around me while driving. How are you going to be able to tell if an ambulance, FD or PD is coming up a side street in front of you when you can’t see them other than the sound? Absolutely contemptibly short-sighted, oblivious narcissism on those jerks’ part.

anonymeParticipantYet another unenforced law in Seattle.
Just don’t touch their car as they almost run you down. You will get in trouble for that.

JanSParticipantyes, voicemail was created for a reason…use it. Whoever it is can wait a few minutes until you can talk with them safely.

FranciParticipantAnd its not just an issue with drivers. Pedestrians also need to have more awareness when using their cell-phones while navigating the city streets. Can’t tell you how many times I’m waiting for a pedestrian to cross the street so I can make a turn, only to have them stop in the middle of the crosswalk to absorb whatever is so fascinating on their device that have to stop walking. Or not paying attention to the lights at all and stepping in front of traffic.
