ebenc4ParticipantHi All,
Would the prolonged train horns at 3,4,5,or 6am be coming from the Duwamish area? we live up by Holden and 35th SW Seems Sunday into Monday is the most.

JanSParticipantthat would probably be right , along West Marginal to Harbor Island. I grew up with trains nearby, don’t mind them, find them comforting in the middle of the night. I know some people despise them. I’m in the Admiral District, and sometimes can hear the sea lions from the sound barking, too…amazing how much sound carries

KatherineLParticipantPersonally, I prefer train horns mellowed by a little distance – which is what I grew up with.

newnativeParticipantI rarely hear the train horns in North Admiral, wish I did. I love them a lot. I do hear fog horns, which is hysterical for me.

Susan21stParticipantAh, yes, childhood memories. What ebenc4 is politely asking about is not the wistful sounds of trains (or sea lions) in the distance, which is lovely. Those of us currently living in the lower lands adjacent to the Duwamish (“slightly” different from North Admiral) experience high volume horns in the very early hours noted, often on Sunday night. Doesn’t seem to be a set pattern.
Having a sea lion at the house next door is equivalent. It’s loud. Don’t disrespect your adjacent neighborhood’s experience. You don’t live there.

newnativeParticipantNo one is disrespecting the OP’s “experience”, and there is nothing in his/her post to suggest a complaint, just a question. You’re finding offense where there is none.

JanSParticipantSorry if I offended. The trains travel from where you are at, all the way to harbor Island(which is just below Admiral.along the Duwamish) I am hearing some now. Trains are not static. In no way was I disrespecting anyone. Yet you want to “argue”. One thing I have learned in the last few weeks…arguing is to see who is right, discussing is to see what is right. I only answered his question. Thanks..have a good rest of the week.

mark47nParticipantIn the proper atmospheric conditions the horns can carry a really, really long way! I live a few blocks from the Junction and on some nights I can hear them clear as a bell.
Yes, they are coming from the area around W. Marginal and the lower bridge. My money says the longer horn is that there are a lot of people living down there and the engineers want to make sure they know a train is coming through…either out of concern or spite.
For Susan21: this is where people have conversations. No one is obliged to stick hard and fast to anything. Tangential topics come up every now and again.
Train horn in the night,
It wakes me from my sound sleep.
Time to make the coffee. -
