yikesMemberMy neighbor has converted his boulevard into a very productive vegetable and fruit garden. I currently have a very big Pampas grass bush that is ugly much of the year. I was wondering if I could donate this area to a pea patch group? I think it would be a much better use of the space.
Any thoughts on this?

megMemberI have been curious about this as well. I was wondering if there was a way to allow people to grow vegetables/fruit like a P-patch in our parking strip. A way to “donate” this unused space to people or a group of people who otherwise have a space to garden.
Anyone?

yikesMemberI agree, if some of the proceeds could go to the food bank or another charity, it would be a far better usage of space….

Mike D.ParticipantContact the Department of Neighborhoods P-Patch program and talk to them about how to make your most excellent idea happen:

Know going in that it will likely not be some quick and easy process.
If it were me, and I wanted to have someone able to vegetable garden in a planting strip THIS spring/summer, I would just put the word out here on the WSB and work directly with the most qualified and non-flakey person who responds and has a yearning to do it.
A note of caution, don’t allow tilling of the soil to any depth without calling 811 and having a utility locating service come out and mark water and gas lines that are below the surface.

Mike D.ParticipantFYI – This from SDOT Street Side Garden Plant List: “Plants must remain low (24″ high) in planting strips within 30 ft of an intersection (36″ elsewhere).”
