WSDwellerMemberWe’ve got a feisty but sweet long-haired kitty who needs to have a few “unsightly” mats cut out. A bath wouldn’t hurt him either. Any good recommendations?

TraciMemberI grew up with a Maine Coone that required a weekly bath and daily brushing or she’d almost get sick with hairballs. You really don’t need to get someone else to do it for you if you’re comfortable with cutting the mats out while he’s sleepy or relaxed. Just be careful :)

HunterGParticipantNow that my cat is a senior, she’s pretty docile, but when she was a feisty kitten/teenager – not so much.
I used to have to wait for her to go to sleep, after she had been out for 20 minutes I would pounce. Since she was naturally tired she was a little more manageable. Good luck!

WSDwellerMemberYup – i’ve been successful at cutting out most of his mats when he’s super relaxed. Except THESE mats…they are by his BUTT! LOL! I am afraid to just start cutting in that area and plus, he’ll kick me if I try!
I brush him every couple of days – except in the area where he’s got these new mats :-( He’s so big (he’s also part Maine Coone) that he has a hard time reaching back there.
I’ve never attempted to give a cat a bath. I thought about trying though – before taking him somewhere else, so we’ll see how that goes!
Thanks for the responses – I appreciate it! :-)

flowerpetalMemberI haven’t had a cat in my life for some time; but I do know people with difficult cats who have used their own vet office for this kind of work. Mats can be painful and cause skin problems. And people in the vet office are used to this kind of work.

wundrgrrrlParticipantHave someone distract them – I’ll have ‘dad’ hold ’em, pet them and talk to them calmly while I’m sneaking around, snipping away. Granted, sometimes it takes days… Just a few snips at a time until kitty darts off.
