Has anyone used a service, locally or otherwise, to transfer home videotapes to DVD or digital files? I have a box of Hi-8 tapes I would like to have transferred for longevity and the place I had previously researched a few years ago has gone out of business. I see Costco has a mail away program (seems scary to just send off family mementos) so I’m curious if anyone has had this done locally, in West Seattle or Seattle/Puget Sound region in general.

Costco does a nice job. Two copies and you can use a coupon when they have them out. Costco prides itself on good business so I wouldn’t worry about it being sent out

You would be better off just having the video captured to a hard drive. It would be uncompressed and higher quality so you could edit it if you wanted to

Yeah I understand uncompressed to a HD would be optimal. I tried to do this myself a few years back but the old video camera I have for playback is on it’s last legs and it have probably 20 needing digitized in some way. At this point if I can find someone more experienced to do it for me at reasonable cost I’ll be happy to start paying for it in batches. I did find another local source that looks like he’s lowered his prices since the last time I looked at his service. He is very adamant on the web that he does it in house and will communicate with you if something doesn’t transfer easily. My dad unfortunately recorded many things using SLP on PAL tapes with an NTSC camera making a few videos over 2 hours and beyond what some of the mail order services will do.

    Decisions decisions.

I could use a place/person for this as well…it’s too much for me to do, and I would never get it done (which is why it isn’t so far). I, too, would be reluctant to give irreplaceable videos to a place like Costco that sends them out. We trusted our wedding photographer, but he sent out the film and guess what? Lost forever (and yes, he was a professional wedding photographer with years of experience0.

I have had great success with Victory Studios, 2247 15th Ave W, Seattle, WA 98119, (206) 282-1776. For Christmas I wanted to surprise my husband with transferring his 8mm family movies to DVD, found them through a co-worker and they did a wonderful job. I believe they will do the same thing with VHS tape to DVD as well. They may be more expensive than Costco but they do fantastic work, even made me a trial disc to make sure I had everything in the right order. Also a great touch is that you can create artwork that they will print on the disc for no extra charge, and you can even create your own wrap on the DVD cases for an even more personalized touch.

I also considered using this local guy as well, he is in Gig Harbor, Danny Towey 253-906-8395

Costco. It’s that easy. I sent in 100 old 8 mm films. It doesn’t matter that they send it out. It’s Costco, they research suppliers before they will use them. It gets sent down to California. My results were fantastic!!!
