c@lbobMemberMcCain = John *Sidney* McCain. I will go no further, except to say that many of the charla’s friends in rabinnical seminaries back east shared that very same name. :-)
May 7, 2008 at 8:13 pm #618018
AnonymousInactiveI’m Republican. He’s the Republican nomination.
Unlike a lot of Dems (as we are seeing), I would not vote for the other party because I don’t like my nominee. It’s loyalty. There are several things I do like about McCain. But I do remember admitting that I wasn’t crazy about him about 3 months ago.
And Kayleigh, you absolutely LOVE to see me get torn up on this forum (it’s extremely obvious) and that’s really unattractive. So, to answer your question from another thread, that is probably why a lot of people don’t stick up for you. You relish in other people’s misery and you make it obvious.
May 7, 2008 at 8:17 pm #618019
KayleighMemberNewRes, I don’t need others to stick up for me; I’m a big girl.
What I like to see is people get called on their comments, as you like to do with me, as people so rarely do with you.
May 7, 2008 at 8:30 pm #618020
AnonymousInactiveInteresting opinion. I would have to disagree. I pretty much get called on any opinion I post (ask JT).
Enough of this…. back to the debating!
JanS – I realize it will not be a shoe-in come this fall (but I have a really good feeling!), so…. Go Obama!
May 7, 2008 at 8:34 pm #618021
JanSParticipantcatlbob…actually, it’s John Sidney McCain III..
and it’s Hillary Diane Clinton….now New Res can call them all by their given names when she talks about them ;-)
New Res..I get angry when things are implied aobut people that blatently aren’t true. And I suppose that if you want to call Barack Obama by his “given” name, that’s up tp you. But be honest with yourself..you said it that way for a reason, even if you don’t realize it yourself. And I made a point of showing that you’re not an equal opportunity name caller.Sometimes we need to look inside ourselves and sort our feelings out. From you saying his name like that, I got the impression that you somewhat believe those things that have been spread about him, and I expect more than that of you…you’re too smart a woman for that.
May 7, 2008 at 8:36 pm #618022
KayleighMemberAnd NewRes, knock it off with the personal insults. (“You obviously relish in other peoples misery”.)
Because I could do an equally cruel and ridiculous psychocyberanlysis of you, and you wouldn’t like it. The next time you offer me one, I’ll give you one right back.

charlabobParticipantHey Ds, we must be doing something right — the R’s can’t even decide which of our candidates to root for. OOOOOH we want to run against Obama. AHHHHH we want to run against Hillary. Sounds to me like they have sense enough not to run against either of them.
I hope that means, for once, we’ll nominate and elect someone who is good for the country, rather than reacting to the opinions of reactionaries.
One of the main reasons Kerry lost (discounting the fact that he didn’t lose) is that his campaign tried to second guess Repug opinion, rather than understand and expound the Democratic side.
For example, the very minute anyone questioned his patriotism and war record, he should have hung their nonsense around their neck and made sure they drown in it. It was the height of disloyalty to the troops and to the country. Instead, thanks in large part to the advice of DLC types like the Clintons and Lieberman, he remained silent for 2 weeks, by which time it was too late.
We have to make sure nothing like that is allowed again. We must make it clear that Rovian tactics will be met by far worse. (And there’s much worse to be said about McNutBoy.)
Think about it: Bush said, “I will not talk about anything that happened before 1983, when I was an alcoholic coke dealer.” And we let him get away with it. (Note the subtlety here? Now, I expect to hear, “He was not a coke dealer — you can’t prove it.”) And the conversation we want has begun.
May 7, 2008 at 8:42 pm #618024
AnonymousInactiveThanks for that JanS. Like I said, I was feeling mischievous today and wrote his name that way. I have nothing to sort out. I’m not trying to imply anything about him by using it.
I don’t trust him and I’m scared for this country if he were to win (I’m pretty sure he won’t). Those feelings have nothing to do with his middle name (or his skin color, villagegreen).
May 7, 2008 at 8:48 pm #618025
charlabobParticipantThanks for the clarification, Jan — Obviously he comes from a longer line of guys with Jewish (oops, did I say that?) sounding names than I knew. Not that *I’m* saying he’s a Jew and not think there’s anything wrong with being Jewish, you understand, but I just want to be sure all the red necks know what they might be, but probably aren’t, voting for.
See how it works?
By the way, for those among us who do not understand irony, ich bin a yid (I am a Jew) and I am merely making the point that this game is eminently playable on all sides. I also don’t think there’s anything wrong with being a Muslim, except when you aren’t one, :-)
I’m sure I could do something with the name Diane too, but she’s irrelevant now…except that apparently we’re going to have to pay her campaign debts to get her off our backs.
May 7, 2008 at 8:49 pm #618026
AnonymousInactiveKayleigh, please don’t threaten me. That is on par with insults. I wasn’t trying to insult you in any way. I was, finally, acknowledging your chiming in whenever I am involved in any heated debate on this forum. You always have a comment about how great it is or it made your day. What should we all think when you continuously do that?
charla – Won’t even comment! Lol. Good try, though.
May 7, 2008 at 8:50 pm #618027
charlabobParticipant>>I don’t trust him and I’m scared for this >>country if he were to win (I’m pretty sure he >>won’t). Those feelings have nothing to do with >>his middle name (or his skin color, >>villagegreen).
Yup, bring on them senile rich white guys any day. At least they’re predictable. They’ll get more and more — some of us, who happen to be of the same class, will get some more. And everyone else will get by–because they can.
NR, if you and the other Repugs can look at what the Bush/Cheney cabal has done to this country over the past 8 years, and claim to be afraid of Obama, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I can only hope you’re being duplicitous and metaphorical.
May 7, 2008 at 8:54 pm #618028
AnonymousInactivecharla – I know, I know. I think with Obama, it would be far worse. Hard to imagine, but I do.
May 7, 2008 at 8:55 pm #618029
KayleighMemberNo, you *were* trying to insult me.
When I was insulting to you, I apolgoized (and have apologized to others off the board); I was under extreme stress and behaved crappily.
You post things that are inflammatory and insulting to Obama supporters, like comparing us to FDLS women, then wonder why I chime in?
I don’t have a problem with you slamming liberals, ’cause we slam Repubs all the time. You have the right to stand up for yourself and the party.
Trouble is, you dish it out, but you won’t take it. I actually refrained from responding to the “Hussien” and “FDLS” stuff. Which showed admirable restraint on my part. But when others responded far better than I could, it amused me.
It’s been a long day…what can I say.
May 7, 2008 at 8:56 pm #618030
charlabobParticipantNR, I’m sure you’ll get the opportunity to find out you’re wrong and I’m also sure you’ll realize and appreciate it. :-)
May 7, 2008 at 9:02 pm #618031
AnonymousInactiveWhat I don’t understand is why Obama supporters are SO easily offended (not all, but a lot).
charla just insinuated that McCain is Jewish (which, obviously wouldn’t matter) and accused Bush of being a coke dealer (and these are just the last insults to my party within the past 5 minutes – not to mention what you all do to his name). Do I care? No.
Can someone explain to me why it is that if something negative is said about Obama, everyone gets personally offended? I see it over and over on this forum.
May 7, 2008 at 9:03 pm #618032
AnonymousInactivecharla – could be. And don’t I owe you a couple drinks if a Dem wins?
May 7, 2008 at 9:06 pm #618033
charlabobParticipantNo problem, you’re off the hook for drinks.
I was merely pointing out how insinuation works. Some of what I said may be true — some may not be true — doesn’t actually matter, does it? The truth is relative (to what you can sell.) That was my point.
Being easily offended and standing up/fighting back are not the same. We have failed to understand that difference, to our detriment, over most of the years of my political involvement.
Dems say <something>
Opponents say <why are you being so defensive?>
Dems say <we’re not … you take that back> .. and forget to argue the valid points we started out with.
I said, long ago, I was hoping Obama was different — that he’d take on hard issues, like racism, and use his position of leadership to lead. Sadly, I’m expecting less of that now, but, of the three, he’s the only possible game in town.
We have some hard stuff coming along and we need many someones to tell us hard truths. I have NO reason to believe McSame will do that and even less reason to believe HD will. So, GO OBAMA!
May 7, 2008 at 9:09 pm #618034
AnonymousInactiveOh, sorry. I’m a little slow.
May 7, 2008 at 9:11 pm #618035
WSMomParticipant“I was feeling mischievous today and wrote his name that way. I have nothing to sort out. I’m not trying to imply anything about him by using it.”
New Res, I think your above statement is disingenuous. IMO, if you had written out Barak Hussien Obama instead of abbreviating the Barak to a B. (which I’ve never seen done before except by Fox News) then you’d have some wiggle worm.
May 7, 2008 at 9:47 pm #618036
AnonymousInactiveListen, it was a joke. There is a famous Rep (will not say who – I’d never hear the end of it) who continuously refers to/writes about Obama in that way. I think it is funny. That’s all. And, did you mean to say wiggle room? What’s worm?
I am not trying to imply ANYTHING about Barack Hussein Obama! I think he has, and will, reveal everything about himself in time and on his own.
May 7, 2008 at 9:54 pm #618037
WSMomParticipantoops, yes I meant wiggle room!
May 7, 2008 at 9:57 pm #618038
AnonymousInactiveThat’s funny, WSMom. Maybe it’s one of those subconscious things. I am actually beginning to feel a little like a worm!
May 7, 2008 at 10:09 pm #618039
WSMomParticipantWould you think it was funny if dems started calling McCain “Sydney” to suggest that he’s Jewish. I think it’s obvious that when reps call Barack Obama “Hussein” they are making a racial/religious fear dig.
I actually wouldn’t care if Barack were Muslim. Growing up in Oregon I remember we had a Muslin Governor (Gov. Ateyah I think was his name). I didn’t know until a couple of years ago what his religion was. Hard to imagine today that a practicing Muslin would be voted into office.
May 7, 2008 at 10:11 pm #618040
WSMomParticipantI was writing my post when you posted, I’m not meaning to put you down. I actually LOVE worms! Really! I have three worm bins making soil for my vege garden right now. My husband has accused me of caring more for my worms than my children (he was kidding). So, if it was subconscious, it was in a good way!!!
May 7, 2008 at 10:24 pm #618041
AnonymousInactiveI wouldn’t care at all if everyone called McCain “Sidney”.
But to make the assumption that I am somehow racist is very drastic. Or to assume that I am making a a religious/racial fear dig is incorrect. Judging by the reaction received when I did use his middle name, I don’t think I’m the one afraid.
Now, if you started calling me by my middle name, I would have a problem.
