avaswebMemberI returned home to find door hangers from Seattle Mobile Auto Service. I immediately removed the annoying door hanger flyers. I phoned the business but they remain unethical. The person I spoke with said he thinks it’s legal to trespass and hang flyers on tenant’s entrances while they are away. I will never support any business that hangs flyers on people’s private etrances. I wish it were illegal. Is there anything I can do to keep trespassing advertisers with door hangers away?

ElizagraceParticipantThis is such a pet peeve of mine.
Ignoring the trespassing argument – there is no better way to announce that no one is home then to hang something from the front door.
It bugs me every time it happens and I always promise to never support a business or group that puts flyers on my front door, especially when they could just put it in the mailbox or even under the doormat.

Ms. SparklesParticipantI totally aree! I think they do technically violate the litering statute. It would be nice if residents could turn in the “litter” to the City and have the offending businesses cited and fined. It’s not like they don’t tell you exactly who they are.
I also refuse to patronize any business who engages in this form of “advertising”

Willie MurderfaceParticipant9 times out of 10, all you need is a “No Solicitors” sign posted near your door. I hang coupons as part of my job, and will never hang one on a home with a no soliciting sign. When I’m out hanging my coupons, I notice that the homes with those signs dont have anything left on their porches.
WSB might even be able to tell you where to get them for free. I have a free one I received from the West Seattle Block Watch Captains group.

singularnameParticipantI hate hate hate that, too. I wouldn’t consider it “unethical,” though–that seems harsh–I’d just say “old-fashioned” or “out of date” … maybe “obnoxious” at worst.

webshafParticipantre:Elizagrace–it is against the law to put items in the mailbox like this… that is a method used for stealing mail…the thief uses the ‘advertisement’ as a reason to open your box and see if there is anything worth taking(they used to grab the ‘handbills’ for yard services when the grocery stores used to let people leave piles at the entrances near community boards.
