I have owned cats for 5 months now and it is clear that despite multiple scratching posts my indoor cats need their nails trimmed. However, I am a scardey cat – I have a trimmer, but its use and my general reluctance at seeing my own blood have me nervous at trimming their nails. But it needs to be done. They don’t need to see the vet until November.

It there anyone in West Seattle that makes house calls that I can pay to come trim their nails? I’d rather not drive them around town and listen to them complain…Thanks for your advice and understanding.

@JayDee – it is not hard to do. Glad to hear that mehud7 is willing to give you a lesson. My wife and I have used the “team” approach on a few cats over the years. We wrap them up in a towel – one holds the towel wrapped cat, and the other trims each paw one at a time. Very effective if you have a “difficult” customer :)

When I need to cut my cats nails she rolls onto her back and almost gives me her paws. She doesn’t bite, scratch or try to run away. Of course I have been cutting her nails since she was a kitten so maybe she was just trained to behave that way when it came time.

Yep, you can get cats, if not to outright enjoy it, put up with it with patience and time…take baby steps and lots of treats and almost any cat will do it. Heck, I even brush my cat’s teeth. And I believe they secretly enjoy the attention.

I’ve also read that you should massage their paws frequently, squeezing their pads so the nails stick out more. Work on that first, then introduce the nail clippers so they’re not as freaked out. Good luck!

I find human nail clippers work much better than the petstore ones.

I second the use of human nail clippers (the small ones), and yes massaging their paws does help.

We had problems with the cats destroying our couches, but since placing a large cat tower and scratching post in the livingroom our 2 cats have not even adventured on our new couches. We also got 2 dog beds and placed them on the floor near the couches so the cats have somewhere other than the couches to lay.

I learned the hard way. I have a scar on my neck that looks like a tracheotomy procedure! Bad Kitty!!!

    (I love my kitty).

Thanks everyone for your cat advice. Mehud7: what day/time works best for you? Do you have way to be contacted? Should I get some baby nail clippers?

206 719-4864 I am pretty flexible this week. You don’t need to buy clippers yet.
