OK, I know there has been discussion on this before, but I did not see anything within four years on indoor HD antennas. Anyone have recent experience? I think we will do a Roku2 box, Netflix and Hulu+. We live in Fairmount Springs just East of California. Has the antenna situation gotten better? Do we still need a HD converter box? Any info would be great.

    So, a few things:

    1. In admiral area, I am using pretty much rabbit ears but I have them in our attic with a wire running down to the tv so we get great reception. Again, you do NOT NEED a fancy HD antenna, this is just a gimmick. Rabbit ears work fine.

    2. You will need a converter box if you have an older tv that does not have the HD tuner built in. If you have a flat panel tv, chances are it’s built in but the old bigger CR tube tv’s do not and will need that box. I used to do that as well with these same rabbit ears and it worked just great.

I’ve been using Apple TV since Christmas for Hulu+, Netflix, YouTube and iTunes streaming from my PC. I just take the barebones limited basic from comcast but hardly watch any of it. It’s so much easier to catch what I want to see on Hulu+ and the commercial breaks are tons shorter so I don’t mind not having the fast forward capability of DVR. From what I understand Roku is pretty similar but if you happen to have other Apple products like iPhones and/or use iTunes take a look at the Apple TV, it makes getting your iTunes movies and music through the TV stupidly simple. You can even use your iPhone as a remote because the itty bitty AppleTV remote (iPod nano sized) loves to slip down between the couch cushions! I’ve honestly been considering canceling the minimal TV service I have from Comcast as well but as I understand it the $16 savings will just result in a $16 increase in the internet price for not “bundling” with TV.

Auwrite!! I hate Comcast myself. Save yourself about $80 a month. You’ll be eating a little better. 95% of cable TV sucks anyways. Unless you’re a woman. I mean..like really. Insert four letter word______and a picture of a middle finger_______ and point it to Comcast!!

We just recently dropped everything except basic cable, but upgraded our internet speed to 50mbs. That’s not only better for streaming stuff through AppleTV, NetFlix, and Hulu but helps when I work from home, too. Saved us $100 a month and made our viewing more targeted.

Trickycoolj nailed it! I have zero cable, just internet, and I love my AppleTV! I use it for Netflix and Hulu plus, and it can mirror my laptop so whatever I can stream online, or see in iTunes, I can also play on my TV. All you need is the AppleTV or other box, a television set and internet access. Even basic cable isn’t needed. I hope more people do this so the cable companies realize that they should offer ala carte or online streaming access to their content.

I am like trickycoolj above – having cable actually nets me a dollar a month on my bill, so I keep basic around – but we have it wired to one tv though and with the exception of breaking news we never watch it.

We got a Roku and love it, with Netflix and HuluPlus we’re pretty well covered. That and Google Play for the occasional Justified or Dexter fix.

The only gripe I have right now is that Hulu has certain shows “Web Only” so you can’t watch them from Roku, Wii or iPad. STUPID. It’s just a device. So I could hook my laptop up to the tv and watch but because I’m using Roku I can’t? STUPID STUPID. I’ve got a nice letter headed their way on this. I realize it’s probably some crazy licensing thing from the studio but seriously – what is the difference????

Cable TV is dying like terrestrial radio is.

I was going to drop all cable TV and just go with Netflix and Hulu+, but found that basic/limited cable (networks) with mid-speed internet is the same price as internet only. I use Tivo to tape news shows and anything else on the networks, and to stream Netflix, etc. I ended up dropping Hulu+ since I didn’t watch any of their shows, except the Daily Show, which I can stream off the internet. Netflix and networks have all I could want. I’m saving about $100/month compared to my old Comcast bill that was “expanded basic cable” and mid-speed internet.

There was nothing good on anyway.

Dumped my own cable several years ago when I realized I was watching CNN and SportsCenter, and paying $80/month for the privilege.

We went the same route you’re planning CAndrew. And couldn’t be happier! We have an antenna, the cheapo one from Radio Shack. You can return within 30 days, so we went low end (I think it was $20) and knew if we needed a better one we could exchange it. We live East of Delridge on Thistle, in a little dip. Reception’s been pretty good. Not sure which internet speed we have, it’s $60 or something a month. Sometimes the picture does that pixelation thing, but it’s been fine for the most part. We have a roku box, at least 3 years old. HuluPlus freezes up on us sometimes, not sure why, but we deal. Netflix via the Roku has been great, rarely any problems.

I hope it all goes well for you. It was such a great feeling to get rid of our comcast!!!

Oh, man, I’m like 100ft away from the Gigabit Seattle coverage area in West Seattle. I wonder if I could run a cable down the sidewalk to someone’s place. Of course I’d duct tape it down so no one trips. :-)

I have an older “HD ready” tv with a converter box. No cable. Thinking about getting a Roku, as mail service is so bad that it’s now taking Netflix DVD’s 2-3 days each way locally. AND, I want to watch those addictive Korean dramas, which Netflix has few of. Anyone have experience with Roku?

They will have a wireless option which sounds superior as well and it will cover the entire city. I will drop Century Link ADSL in a heartbeat if this actually rolls out…and I will be peeved if it doesn’t.

Thinking about switching from Comcast to Direct TV if they ever get the PAC-12 network. My only issue is my comcast email. But switching to gmail and sending out an address change to my contacts can’t be that big a deal. Happens all the time, right?

Big fan of apple tv, especially with the mirroring funtionality from my mac.

$249 last month for triple play (phone, internet, cable) and only one On Demand purchase. Unreal.

JKB.. 95% of today’s TV shows attract women audience. There are no more shows on TV for men anymore. At least what appeals to me. The last three years I haven’t had a TV and still don’t. I can watch my sports on the Internet for free. I used to be a Netflix subscriber got rid of that. After awhile it gets old. I’m getting older myself, and today’s TV shows just don’t interest me one bit.
