We have a hideous amount of broken stuff (air conditioners, humidifiers, espresso machines, you name it — we’ve got it.) Not to mention computer crap(tm) and obsolete VCRs and … Our consumption has been entirely too conspicuous. The question is, do we just toss this junk in the garbage, figure out how to recycle it (how???), or is there someone/organization that might want it for parts or to use. (The obsolete stuff is usable — the broken stuff is, um, broken.) I’ve given away everything from hospital beds to 5 year-old magazines through craigslist, but haven’t had any nibbles for this.

Included in this stash is a huge collection of recorded videos that could be recorded over, watched or, turned into performance art??? You see the scope of our problem. :-)

Someone on Craigslist took our old video tapes. Often schools or groups that do stuff with kids look for broken appliances for the kids to take apart.

If you haven’t yet listed those items on Craigslist, maybe a teacher or instructor will respond. I know that our preschool does a take-apart time but they have no space to store the stuff so can only take it when they need it.

I have too much stuff already.

Repairing stuff is part of the reason.

If you have an espresso machine that is really expensive, I may not be able to resist it.

The current little cheap one shot at a time version I have is rescued from a yard sale and repaired.

Many appliances are easy to repair.

Consumer Electronics are usually designed in a way that make repairing them impossible or not worth the time. (Hint: that’s why they call them “consumer” electronics)

I think I counted up the laptops I have repaired and it looks like I have 7 with two more on the bench waiting for time to put in the replacement parts I ordered.

I have no real use for most them and a couple are so old I would be embarrassed to even give them away.

I do need pc100 and pc133 sdram in 256 size sticks if you have any. I have 3 PIII dells I am making into linux boxes to go to a friend on the Yakama reservation.

I have lots of stuff to trade :)

I seem to remember hearing too late about a city wide computer recycle day last fall. I intend to have my station wagon filled and ready to go if they do it again.

Here’s a list of local recyclers and what they take.

Also note this place has a program where anyone pretty much any age can volunteer for a rather short number of hours, get basic training on a computer and get a free recycled computer to take home. Check out the details on the web site.

Also mac users, they have quite a few Macs that are new enough to run OSX 10.2 for very good prices.
