guidosmomMemberFor the third time in the last two weeks I have seen a bicyclist pedaling south on the viaduct through downtown, heading towards West Seattle. He is usually driving between the two lanes. This has always been during evening/afternoon rush hour. This seems extremely dangerous! People merge and try to get over quickly, without really looking for a bicyclist. Is this now allowed? I certainly hope not.

miwsParticipantI can’t imagine that being allowed.
The closest thing I’ve seen to it being legal, is along some of the less populated stretches of I-5, (think south of Olympia, or so) where surface roads, and/or perhaps access across the freeway, from one side to the other is pretty sparse.
It’s probably been back since the mid-’90’s that I was aware of this, (back when I had a car), and I think it was relatively recently instituted back then.
Don’t know if it’s still in effect, and I suppose there may have been areas way up north on I-5, as well as I-90, that would have allowed that.

datamuseParticipantI sure wouldn’t try it. Though the surface streets in that area aren’t much better at the moment.

trickycooljParticipantIt’s not allowed. I recall a friend told me his bus came upon a cyclist on the bridge once and the bus stopped and made the guy get on.
I’ve seen WSDOT and SDOT traffic follow illegal highway cyclists on the traffic cams before on twitter. Maybe send them a tweet when you see the cyclist again.

JayDeeParticipantOn the first bike to work day (while driving, bad dog) I saw a guy with his bike on his shoulder walking down the Admiral Way on-ramp from the West Seattle Fre…Bridge. For the life of me I couldn’t imagine why he would be on the Bridge in the first place. I suspect he had a mechanical issue, but my real concern was for his safety…it’s not like there is a sidewalk on/off the Bridge.

wsn00bParticipantBicycle Rapid Transit?

KBearParticipantIt’s allowed because SPD does next to no enforcement on the Alaskan Way Viaduct, probably because there’s no place to pull over safely. Just look at all the northbound bus lane violators every morning. They catch them on the bridge but completely ignore them on 99. Traffic on 99 would move faster if people would drive more courteously.

trickycooljParticipantIt is bike to work month, does Cascade need to do some outreach about how to get to/from West Seattle not on the highway?

amaliaParticipantIt’s a safe bet that a newbie cyclist got confused. Or someone is a little bit crazy. Chances are they’ll never do it again (if it’s the former). Some crazy things happen during Bike to Work Month. Finding your way around on a bike for the first time in Seattle is NOT easy.

trickycooljParticipantNo kidding. I’ve seen a ton of people bombing down Highland Park Way hill at 40mph+ on bicycles! I was really afraid this morning’s closure was a cyclist. That stupid hill is the only reason I refuse to ride the 5 miles to work, it’s treacherous.

datamuseParticipantHighland Park Way is pretty much the only place I ride on the sidewalk. Because the cars are going 40 mph (and faster) too…

trickycooljParticipantNo kidding. Although last week I regularly had to go over 40 to safely pass a cyclist in the right lane (same guy every day). Made me really nervous.
