I recently moved to Seattle in August and have been trying to find people to play music with. I play bass, sing, and have been writing music for about the last 8 or 9 years. I’ve tried craigslist without much luck. Any ideas?

    Hello, and welcome to Seattle!
What type of music do you like to play? Any specific genres you like? I would recommend you go to a few of the local live shows and meet people there, lots of people in the music community go to the shows-pick up a copy of The Stranger [free everywhere, new issue out every Wednesday] look at the clubs and who’s playing where, search out the music on YouTube. Also, have you posted ads on bulletin boards at Guitar Center or Seattle Drum School? [not sure if those still exist, I remember them when I was taking lessons]. Also, there is a website called meetup.com and you can either search for or create your own group to meet new people.
    Good luck on your search!

Welcome! I’m a musician in WS. I used to be gigging but my day job – career finally caught up with me years sgo so I had to step away. There are a number of Open Mics in the area. The one that comes to mind is the one on Wednesdays at the Skylark. I kinda was in the house band in Georgetown for a few years so I’m a bit familiar with these things. Best thing… show up, ask a lot if questions about ettiquette and remember that this is NOT a gig. It’s NOT a contest either. It’s an opportunity to enjoy & encourage each other with whatever skill level you bring.

You will generally be limited to something like a 15 minute slot. Listening & encouraging is the best and largest part so don’t just play your piece & leave. Enjoy the the music, people and of course support the sponsoring venue & staff. I’m always looking to play but drums or bass don’t make for good solo instruments. Maybe we’ll bump into each ither… Good luck!

I forgot… The house generally provides for a PA, Mics, backline amp & a drumset. Sometimes keys. The house sound guy is usually the guy or girl running the show. Please bring your instrument and your tuner to tune up before your slot. The professional part is not to noodle around on stage. Set up, set levels & go. And then get off the stage out of respect for the next guys. There will be plenty of room to sign autographs off stage. :-)
