In reply to: What’s Your Favorite West Seattle Restaurant?
JiggersMemberI’ve only been to Endolyne Joe’s one time and I will never go back their again. We had horrible service when we went. In fact, I’ve noticed lately that they’ve been advertising for a plethora of job positions on Craigslist which isn’t a good sign.
Talarico’s for best valued Pizza..
Kamei just for the sushi and Sake. Very reasonably priced compared to anywhere in downtown.
West-5 for its savory meatloaf and awesome nacho’s plate. Salads are good too. I make my own mac and cheese at home.
Jak’s for their happy hour burger.
Don’t have the Rocksports prime rib dinner on Friday nights. You definetely get what you pay for. Yuk..

FullTiltParticipantI would say Black Bird is about my fav place in West Seattle.
Least favorite has to be Endolyne Joe’s. Last meal I ate there I got raw, not under cooked, but raw, chicken. yummy.
If you are looking for crepes, and I know it is not West Seattle, but the hanger cafe in Gtown is amazing and cheap.

July 3, 2008 at 11:25 pm #630039In reply to: Still Think The War Was Unnecessary?
JoBParticipantNewResident…
Cudos to you. you sought a source from a more “balanced” republican… and not an extremist… great job!
however, since Doug Feith was in charge of selling the war to the American Public in the first place.. he has a pretty big vested interest in justifying what he did.
was Saddam a pain in the .. you know… ???
Yup, he was. He was also an all round bad guy and terrorized his own people.
But a terrorist threat? Not unless you include terrorizing his own people.
He simply didn’t have the resources… the reasonable means we had been trying were finally taking their toll and it was all he could do to hold his country together and hope none of his neighbors decided to return the favor and invade.
We were successfully negotiating with Saddam two weeks before the invasion.
It was actually a bigger threat to american security to invade Iraq.
if nothing else, it meant that we were using our military resources and therefore didn’t have resources left to actively pursue the real terrorists.
At worst, the invasion generated more terrorists than it killed… and some of them are likely planning attacks against us as we speak.
The only statement from those you listed above that i think we can agree is true is the last…
America was more likely to agree to the invasion than at any other time in our history. We wanted retaliation.. and i think Saddam looked as good as any…
However, if Bush hadn’t erroneously tied Saddam to 911, i think he would have had a much harder time selling this war.

charlabobParticipantKL, you summarized the situation very well. In a rare moment of fairness to “admitted conservatives” I have to add that the beginning of the “give the poor “n” months to get their acts together, without any supporting services” came from the BillClinton administration. He was not an “admitted” conservative, though he could have, and did, fool me.
In the 80’s we (yup, including me) decided it wasn’t fair to lock up the mentally ill. And sometimes it wasn’t. As usual, the conservatives took the idea and ran with it — the idea was that we’d provide services and a support network so they could be integrated in the community. The reality was we shut down the institutions and many of the half-way houses and then shut down the community support networks. Leaving many people mumbling on the streets.

July 2, 2008 at 3:17 pm #629388In reply to: I let my dog off leash..
JoBParticipantlet me tell you about mochi…
she is adorable.. and not just because she is my dog. she is 30 pounds, her ears are alert… and she looks as friendly as they come. her tail curls up over her back and she prances as she walks.
but she was dumped into more than one pack of dogs on her way to my house… and she learned quickly that it was better to be in charge than not.
She looks friendly. in spite of my warning, people let their dogs run up to my cute little leashed dog. She wags and sniffs.. and if they don’t defer to her, she snarls and bares her fangs… and if they don’t submit.. she fights.
she has no fear. She challenged a mastiff one day. She didn’t win, but she fought well.
she is slowly beginning to trust that we will take care of dogs around her and challenges less… but some pretty fierce dogs come in small packages…
you would be more likely to be hurt trying to separate my dog from yours than from a pitbull because her teeth are needle sharp and her breed is barely an evolutionary step up from wolves.. so once she gets started, it really takes a lot to call her off.
your big friendly four legged sweetie could get hurt by those sharp teeth.. even if she didn’t sink them in to make a point.. and so could you.
let me tell you about Yuki. He was abused by people on his way to me.
He looks just like a sweet little fox and few people who meet him can resist him.. unless of course he is lunging on his leash, growling with those same fangs bared and trying to attack.
I tell people to stay away from this dog. They approach. he sits by my side. I tell people not to talk to this dog. he sits by my side but tenses. i tell people not to pet him. they reach their hand down to him and he lunges to bite. And that is the best case scenario.
luckily i have been able to pull my dog back behind me.. lunging and snarling every time i have encountered someone who just can’t take no for an answer.. but luck and diligence only go so far.
Just watching my dogs wrestle is enough to frighten most people. they look like they will kill one another.. and sound like it too.. until you look closer and realize they are truly all snarl and no bite… at least with those they know.
I believe they don’t escalate to actual violence unless the other dog does.. but i don’t think i’ll test that one. these dogs aren’t likely to even get to play in dog parks… i am not sure they will even make it to breed meet-ups.
i am told their breed will fight to the death with one another… and i know they are being used as guard dogs. It’s probably better not to risk it.
Now you might say i should have put dogs like that down, but most problem dogs are the result of problem owners and these two are no exception.
They make incredible progress. Just yesterday mochi met another dog and simply sat by my side ignoring the other dog.. and Yuki successfully took his first tour in a pet store.. and managed to mind his own business and walked out of the store completely fascinated with a new toy. he now knows where the toy store is:(
We have spent a bundle finding good trainers and have worked with these dogs every day since we adopted them nearly a year and a half ago.. and will work with them every day for the rest of their lives… and are amply rewarded for our work by dogs who become happier, more loving and more trusting every day.
the truth is that you don’t know anything about either the dogs on leash around you or the friendly looking dog who runs up to you.. regardless of what their owner looks like.
I am responsible as responsible with my dogs as i look…
but you just don’t know if the dog approaching you has been well loved and well trained … whether it is leashed or not.
leash laws are as much for your safety as that of others.
July 2, 2008 at 6:12 am #587368Topic: 2 notes for gardeners
in forum Open DiscussionWSBKeymasterOne is a commercial plug – we won’t get her “welcome post” up till tomorrow because of today’s breaking news, but Vera from Village Green Perennial Nursery has joined WSB as a sponsor – we also have garden coach Julie Hale but Village Green is the first local nursery to sponsor us and if you haven’t been out that way (she’s a little ways past Roxbury Safeway), worth the trip. We bought a honeysuckle there about three years ago and it’s flourishing.
http://www.villagegreenperennialnursery.com
Second mention is an update on a garden project we posted a while back – Marguerite asked if we could mention this again and we told her there are many avid gardeners frequenting the forum, so we’d post it here:
>>Plans are moving ahead for our community garden (p-patch) on the corner of 44th Ave SW and Hill Street in the North Admiral neighborhood. We are turning my very long and wide weed filled parking strip into an organic shared veggie garden. Soil will be arriving sometime next week and we have room for up to two more people. Each person will have their own plot to plant as they choose. We are modeling our garden like the City P-Patch program, but we are not a part of or sponsered by the City in any way. Great chance to grow your own yummy food (for your self or to give away), meet wonderful new people and learn about our working honey bee hive in the garden. Please contact Marguerite at

JiggersMemberIn retrospect to yung whore, I went and karaokeed their one night and got sick the next day and suspected that those mics they used are nasty because I did hint a bad smell and most likely hasn’t been sanitized or cleaned in ages. I am sure they are ladened with Ecoli since those mics are communally used every night, and everyone’s hands and spittal goes directly to where your lips sing too. Karaokeeing is an easy way to get sick fast because of those reasons.

luckycharmsMemberKatie,
From Olympic Pizza I had the “Spiro” pizza minus the shrimp and it was AMAZING. YUM YUM YUM. It was similar to Spiro’s pizza but I actually…gasp…think I liked it even better than Spiro’s.
Nice people running the place, family friendly but the place doesn’t seat that many people.

RainyDay1235Member(IMO) Best TO-GO pizza is Amante’s – look for their coupons in the mail – very good quality!
Best EAT-IN is Talarico’s happy hour (3-6 every day)….enormous tasty (sweet sauce, not too greasy) slices for $3.50 – YUM. Killer ceasar salads too! :)
June 29, 2008 at 4:26 pm #629479In reply to: Luciano’s Pizza – RANT
charlabobParticipantOK, at the risk of losing my foodie cred, is NY pizza the thick crust and Chi-town the thin? If yes, I love the thin (and got it here, for the first time, at Garlic Jim’s — crusty, not burned — yummy.) Actually, we got it delivered at BPP — perhaps the pre-pizza pitcher of beer lowered my standards.
My favorite “east coast” pizza came from Boston’s north end — black crust (squid ink?), a thin layer of equisite meaty toppings– and, of course, anchovies. Damn, that generic diet breakfast beverage may not be enough this morning. There is nothing like cold pizza in the morning.

TrickParticipantI haven’t been back to Tony’s for awhile, mainly because I’m waiting for the fresh corn to come in.
Other Roasted corn vendors I’ve had don’t seem to have that plump corn that squirts all over when you dive in. (smiling)
WestSeattledood, your description makes me want to skip breakfast and head down there, YUM!
I think I’m going to open a floss stand next to the Roasted corn.

JoBParticipanti eat the corn when tony tells me to. i also bring home fresh corn to cook “that day” … as he tells me to:)
yup.. i have fallen for the local grocer ;-)
tony.. if you are listening.. even through someone else’s ears.. can you track down the woman with the killer tamales? I bet i am not the only one contemplating a trip over the bridge to track her down:)

June 26, 2008 at 9:19 pm #629025In reply to: Giving up VEGETABLES – who’s with me?
keleesoMemberBikefor1 and Jan, strawberries have iron and they are yummy, and blackstrap molassess has iron too. You can take a spoonful. I am a vegan, but I am about the worst vegan I know. I fall off the (meat) wagon way too often. I salivate when I drive by KFC or the teriyaki place by the WS bridge. I also salivate when I smell bbq hamburger or steak.
June 26, 2008 at 7:47 pm #629015In reply to: Giving up VEGETABLES – who’s with me?
JanSParticipantFunny thing..I was recently told to eat extra red meat, perhaps liver, too, by my doc…have had low red cell counts since my surgery 6 weeks ago, low energy, too. Of course, he also said to take an iron supplement…and I have misgivings about those. I asked him about spinach..his response – lol…was, ohhhh, I don’t like spinach..cracked me up. So, I had liver and onions this week…yum.
As a cancer survivor, I have read many, many things about what to eat, what not to eat…my theory is..moderation in everything. There was one study that said if I ate french fries when I was a kid, I was more susceptible to getting breast cancer as an adult…and that’s only one of many, many studies that I’m not sure do any good but put fear into you. I need extra calcium because the cancer drug that I take can cause osteoporosis, yet dairy isn’t good for me? I could go on and on…
and, no, I will not give up my veggies, either :) Sometimes when I neglect them, I actually start craving things like green beans and broccoli…and don’t get me started on cabbage – lol…
being a vegetarian..and especially a vegan, is not the easiest thing in the world to do. There are many unhealthy vegetarians out there because they don’t do their homework to ensure that they are getting enough protein, enough balanced nutrients. It’s not a license to eat whatever just because it has no animal products in it….you still have to be sensible..
I don’t eat beef often, but, boy , when I do, I really, really enjoy it :)

You may have heard/read this already but White Center Glass and Upholstery is also working on a new art space and bistro called All About Art:

June 25, 2008 at 9:08 pm #628452In reply to: Is Seattle Racist???
JoBParticipantsoclwrkrinmotn..
i grew up in Pendleton Oregon where racism didn’t seem to be an issue.. because there weren’t many kids of color in town…
until my sister was photographed by the local paper holding hands with the little boy whose dad owned the local cleaners..
yup.. asian.
mom had a fit.. and i think that put it mildly. needless to say, the local paper didn’t get permission to print that photo.
that was the first indication i had that racism existed in my home.. i thought we were really nice people and that racism was something that had to do with other not so nice people.
as i grew older, i realized that racism ran deeper in my community than i thought… the native indians in the area were rarely seen off their reservation except during round-up.
i think it is harder to be so isolated with tv and movies than it was when i was growing up..
but i think it is still possible to think that “isms” are something that other not so nice people do and not us.
I think it has to become personal to become real.

FullTiltParticipantA few things…we aren’t open tomorrow, so have that scoop on Tuesday. Our regular hours are Tues – Sun noon to 8pm, and late on Fri and Sat, until 10pm and later if we can still stand. We are working on getting bands to play Friday nights.
Fern from White Center Upholstery is opening a restaurant/art gallery sometime soon in the space behind her shop. She has a ton of great ideas and it should be a real highlight of the neighborhood!
Alki Tattoo is a great shop, with a view of the beach. 2622 Alki Ave. Justin and I both have work from there.
White Center Pho (16th south of Roxbury, east side of street)and Banh 88 (Delridge, just north of Rozella)are both amazing-lick the plate good. And White Center Deli, right next to us, is super yummy. Kim, the owner, is kind and will answer any “what’s that?” questions.
