Paws & Paint…our signature pop-up event is hilarious and fun! Yes, the dogs really do paint on stretched canvas, using non-toxic paint and sponges.

We are hoping you can help staff this great community event on Saturday July 14th. Shifts are 3 hours and of course you can stay longer If you are having too much fun to leave. Your joyful responsibilities include:
    • Helping dogs and owners find a space to sit, select paint colors and paint
    • Give owners tips on how to sponge paint onto their dog’s paws and transfer that to the canvas. (You’ll learn the tips real fast!)
    • Sometimes you will be holding treats to lure the dogs to walk across the canvas.
    • Provide clean up water and paper towels to the dogs and owners.
    • ‘Check’ the paintings in case folks would like to walk about Summerfest and not carrying the painting.

It is tough duty, but someone has to do it!

Do you have three hours to share and help dogs ‘n’ owners paint? We would love to hear from you! Email us at furryfaces@hotmail.com

no tax looks fair when you look at them singularly. You have to look at the totals to compare. For where we live … assuming you aren’t in the process of buying and setting up a house.. our total tax burden is relatively low.

I agree that i wish we got more bang for our buck.. and we should.. but that’s another conversation.

I am still recovering from a double whammy of surgeries a couple of years ago.. but I am still here and my last scan was clear.. so i would say i am doing just fine.

it’s all well and good to bandy terms but it’s probably better if you know what they actually mean.. True revolutionaries turned in their grave when you labeled Sawant a Trotskyite… though i am sure she looks pretty revolutionary to conservatives.

What is the difference between Trotskyism and Democratic Socialism?

Income taxes are ridiculous! The only people that pay into income taxes are the folks that live here. Every single person that visits from elsewhere to enjoy our beautiful part of the world pays nothing and we are left to shoulder the burden for everything that needs to be done. How can income taxes be an improvement over getting folks from other parts of the country and the world to help keep our economy and government running? Wanting an income tax makes no sense.

I must agree, however, that property taxes are out of hand and I will not support additional increases until there is some accountability.

Well I’m not saying it’s right. Or fair. But I don’t mind the extra property taxes because my family is getting the bargain of a lifetime. Mrs. and I are in our prime earning years. We’re making good money and paying zero state income tax. The extra $1,000 or so in property taxes is nothing compared to what we’d be paying in state income tax if we were in Oregon or California or one of the other 43 states with an income tax.

Now… if we moved to Burien or Tukwila we’d escape both the income tax and the high(ish) Seattle property taxes. But I can’t take the commute. So we’ll stay put in West Seattle.

“PS…I’m a 55 yr old man and fireworks have been going off as far back as I can remember, do I like them, no, do they keep me awake at night, yes sometimes but they’ll probably keep going off until the day I leave this earth”

Seems like a very defeated attitude. Why? I don’t understand that. Public nuisances that a lot of people vocally dislike and want to end can be stopped. If 1 house on a block throws loud ragers every night, the police can step in with fines to address the problem. The same can be done with fireworks.

“so I can either ignore them or let my inner sole dwell on them and turn into a grumpy old man, what do you think?”

There’s a third option, work to get real enforcement of the issue. SPD could make a serious dent in their operating budget for the year in just two nights by ticketing anyone they see lighting anything bigger than sparklers. Set off a role of black-cats? That’s $5K. Set off mortar shells? That’s $5K for each round.

Taking a no-holds-barred approach for just one year would drive so much news everyone would know about it and maybe, just maybe, they’d drive or catch a bus south for the the 1-3 miles to WC/Burien to set them off instead. You know, where it’s actually legal? Here in my neighborhood during New Year’s the idiots across the street were setting off larger rockets (not penny-bottle rockets but not mortars) AT cars. SPD didn’t do anything about it even though I said I had video of them doing it repeatedly. That’s offensive. It shouldn’t take a serious accident before this changes but it’s only a matter of time before one of these tools sets a forest fire, or causes a car accident, or physically injures someone. Why is that an acceptable risk?

“My worry is that once an income tax is started it will go up, up, up, and municipalities and state agencies will still charge or pass new taxes further burdening everyone.”

This is exactly why we will never improve our tax system. Even when voters have a chance to move toward a fairer, more progressive tax system the defeatist attitude prevails. Just a couple of years ago there was an initiative that would have levied a small income tax on the most wealthy corporations and individuals in the state (I don’t remember the initiative number, you could look it up). It would have been enough to completely cover the costs of a state sponsored healthcare program and only affect a tiny portion of the populace. And it was something we all got to vote on, not something cooked up by legislators. Result? Not passed. Because “once they start an income tax…”

So, always a good topic for complaining, but no stomach, even among voters much less legislators, to do even the slightest thing to alter one of the most unfair and regressive tax systems among the 50 states.

At some point as I was walking along Alki yesterday, the stone fell out of my ring. It’s small (maybe 3mm long), rectangular cut, and clear light green. It’s not valuable, just an inexpensive peridot, but has symbolic value and I’d love to get it back. I know the chances of someone spotting a stone that tiny are pretty small, but I’m hoping folks can keep a lookout for it. Thanks much.

i would prefer to think that democrats are held accountable
or as in Franken’s case.. hold themselves accountable
unfortunately that isn’t always the case ….

if we accept a lack of ethics as a barometer of success we have lost.

I spent a lot of time looking for a new place after over 15 yrs in WS and from my experience you won’t find much at that price there. If you’re open to other areas, you’ll get a much nice home with less traffic problems in Burien. For many people, Burien is just 1st Ave south and unappealing businesses along that road. There are a lot of nice residential areas and a lot calmer than what WS has become.

dobro: Democrats are too nice, much too nice. Biggest problem with Democrats. We had an effective national voice in Al Franken but a woman’s story of how he kissed her in a play when he was 20-something is enough for him to step down. Republicans want power and won’t let ethics get in the way. Dems fall short of perfection and quit.

Yes. I always wear a PDF and a whistle, sometimes an air horn.

More importantly, what prompted your rant? Are you sitting in your car in traffic adjacent to a body of water watching people have fun on SUPs and in kayaks?
