Parents shouldn’t litter the streets with their crappy rogue signs. However, if you are going to operate an automobile, you ARE personally responsible for the safety of pedestrians, to the extent that it’s practically possible. Even when they’re not where they should be. If that’s too much of a burden for you, take the bus next time.

SLOW DOWN signs, held by a yellow stick-like man have started littering our streets all over West Seattle. I can’t imagine there is a driver in West Seattle who wants to hit a child on their way to or from where ever they’re headed, and I agree that some drivers are driving faster that the established speed limit. As a matter of extreme safety, I encourage you parents who think you’re doing something useful, STOP with the SLOW DOWN signs. Instead, teach your kids to stay out of the street (you know, where 2 ton+ cars drive), stop expecting drivers to be personally responsible for your children, and (if you’re any kind of parent at all) take them to the park. There are no shortage of them in West Seattle. I know I will be attacked for writing this, and as important as you think your opinion is, just consider, it will not bring your mangled, lifeless child back from the grave. I am a courteous, cautious driver who makes every effort to obey traffic laws and yield right-of-way whenever appropriate. That said, I almost hit a child the other day (again) avoiding a distracting sign placed in the road (not on the side). Shame on the parent who let their loosely attended 4ish year old depend on a SLOW DOWN sign for safety while riding erratically in the street. Save a child’s life, take her to the park and keep her OUT of the road. In the meantime, I’m going to report to the police every time I see a SLOW DOWN sign in the street.

    Sincerely,

    A Concerned Neighbor

There were quite a few fireworks in Arbor Heights yesterday, day and night. One bomb sounded much larger than an M-80. I saw something that was quite disturbing. I was working outside and heard/saw the rocket go up. It exploded near some birds that were flying over. Their flight became very erratic, struggling. They were clearly injured in some way. They fluttered some distance, then disappeared. I also saw the debris fall from the sky onto neighbor’s property. I’m still finding crap in my yard.

The only explanation as to why this idiocy is still going on is that stupid is forever.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed or can shed light on the placement of dumpsters along California Avenue at the newish “Springline Apartments” on the 3400 block. The dumpsters are always on the sidewalk and approaching pick-up, they are overflowing with debris all over the place. It is a neighborhood blight. It was enough to put up with the construction. Is this the end state design?

I tried looking up the regulations but alas, I got drowned in links. 1. How can dumpsters placed on sidewalks be legal? 2. How can such a large development be approved for occupancy without provisions for solid waste handling?

Most of us that live here take pride in keeping our community clean and safe. This seems a bit appalling.

no tax looks fair when you look at them singularly. You have to look at the totals to compare. For where we live … assuming you aren’t in the process of buying and setting up a house.. our total tax burden is relatively low.

I agree that i wish we got more bang for our buck.. and we should.. but that’s another conversation.

it’s all well and good to bandy terms but it’s probably better if you know what they actually mean.. True revolutionaries turned in their grave when you labeled Sawant a Trotskyite… though i am sure she looks pretty revolutionary to conservatives.

Income taxes are ridiculous! The only people that pay into income taxes are the folks that live here. Every single person that visits from elsewhere to enjoy our beautiful part of the world pays nothing and we are left to shoulder the burden for everything that needs to be done. How can income taxes be an improvement over getting folks from other parts of the country and the world to help keep our economy and government running? Wanting an income tax makes no sense.

I must agree, however, that property taxes are out of hand and I will not support additional increases until there is some accountability.

Well I’m not saying it’s right. Or fair. But I don’t mind the extra property taxes because my family is getting the bargain of a lifetime. Mrs. and I are in our prime earning years. We’re making good money and paying zero state income tax. The extra $1,000 or so in property taxes is nothing compared to what we’d be paying in state income tax if we were in Oregon or California or one of the other 43 states with an income tax.

Now… if we moved to Burien or Tukwila we’d escape both the income tax and the high(ish) Seattle property taxes. But I can’t take the commute. So we’ll stay put in West Seattle.
