Last night (11/10), around 5:00, it was nice out, so my wife and I decided to take our small dog, and the dog we’re watching for a friend (a 70+ pound Afghan Hound) for a walk along the beach at Lincoln Park. We didn’t know how well she reacts to other dogs, so I literally had her on a short leash. Sure enough, she would occasionally bark and try to make aggressive moves towards some other dogs. We decided to head back, and about midway between the north end of the trail and Coleman Pool, I saw a man with a golden retriever on the beach. Of course that in itself is illegal, but at least I didn’t have to worry about them. Or so I thought.
Our dog (the big one), caught sight of the other dog and started barking. I grabbed her by her harness in order to keep better control of her while they passed. Except the other dog started running right towards us. Which is when I realized it wasn’t on a leash. Our dog started freaking out. And even though I’m 5’10” and 170 pounds, I was having a very hard time controlling her. I stood over top of her and grabbed the harness with both hands, but it was still like trying to control a bucking bronco.
I started yelling at the guy, first demanding to know why his dog wasn’t on a leash. He responded by saying they’re just playing. My dog was frantically barking, growling, and desperate to break my grip. I don’t know the dog that well, but I know dogs enough in general to know that this was not playing. I yelled even more frantically at the guy to get his dog on a leash, and he continued to insist that they were just playing. Meanwhile, my wife was attempting to get in between the dogs, as they were growling and lunging at each other.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, but was likely only 15 seconds, the other guy pulled his dog away. Once we were separated by about 10 feet I again yelled at the guy to get his dog on a leash. He once again insisted that they were just playing. I told him that it was illegal, and if he didn’t get his dog on a leash, I’d be calling the police. We then went our separate ways.
It was utterly baffling at how completely oblivious this guy was to what was going on. I can only assume it was a defense mechanism, since he knew full well he was breaking the law by letting his dog run off leash, and he was trying to minimize what happened. Even IF his dog was “just playing”, our dog most certainly was not. And at about twice his dog’s size, it wouldn’t have been pretty, had I “let them play”. And just in case there’s any doubt that our dog wasn’t playing, my wife walked away with a bite to her thigh. It was our dog who did it. Otherwise I would have run back, tackled the guy, and called the cops.
So proof #235,356,378 as to why you should always keep your dog on a leash in public. I’d wonder why there weren’t more police around to enforce it. But considering they don’t have the bandwidth to keep cars from being broken into in the parking lots there, ticketing leash scofflaws is probably just a pipe dream.
Was anyone approached by one or two African American young men, asking for donations to a non-profit that fights police brutality today? I was waiting for my ride at the corner of 42nd Ave SW and Admiral Way, and a black, 2-door Mercedes stopped at the red light, on 42nd heading north. The passenger asks me if I know what police brutality is, first he mumbles, then he repeats it and I said yes. He jumps out the car with a tan attache case, opens it to show handwritten email addresses on a notepad of people he said support his non-profit that fights police brutality and that he was one of the people attacked by Tougaloo Police Officers. He asked me for support for his non-profit, it has the word “Free” in the name. I said I can’t give any support and he waddled across the street to Metropolitan Market. He was wearing a yellow, velour jump suit … A very odd encounter to start a Saturday morning. Interestingly, SPD made a right onto 42nd Ave SW from Admiral, almost immediately after the encounter.

A man in the back was aggressively yelling in a woman’s face, calling her a “dumb, white bitch”. He was holding something in his hand that looked like spray. I have no idea what triggered that incident and would like some details. I am still recovering from that bus ride.
Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for young people ages 10-24. The median age for the onset of symptoms of anxiety issues is 11. More than 60% of youths experiencing depression are not receiving treatment.
YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID
Youth Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based 8 hour training designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, coaches, mentors, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to recognize and help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis.
Many mental health issues first arise in the teen years, and if teens have adults in their life who they trust, and who are able to talk to them about what is going on in their lives, they are better able to cope with what is going on.
This training teaches how to recognize signs that a youth is having difficulties, how to listen and communicate in a supportive fashion, and how to get emergency help if there are signs of crisis.
This class is a $170 value that is being offered for free. It is being hosted by CrossFit Hinge and manuals are being provided by King County Behavioral Health. I’m the instructor. I’ve been a West Seattle resident for more than 3 decades. The training will be happening in the SoDo neighborhood. It starts at 8:30, and you must attend the entire 8 hours. Participants need to be age 18 or older.

The American Lung Association’s Master Home Environmentalist program offers free Healthy Home Checkups for ANY resident in Seattle. Our program helps residents find health hazards affecting their indoor air quality and gives recommendations on how to reduce those hazards. It is our hope that by following our recommendations, you can create a healthier home environment.
For homes that have a child living with asthma, we focus on common household asthma triggers. By signing up for a visit, these households can receive a free vacuum, dehumidifier, OR air purifier. Best,
Master Home Environmentalist ProgramThis blog, and Nextdoor, is rife with us residents voicing dissatisfaction the the judiciary – all the criminals coming back, repeating their crimes and taking a chunk of ideal out of our paradise. However, how do we change things if – on the West Seattle Ballot – there are 18 judicial related positions (prosecutors, state supreme court, local judges) and only 2 were contested? Aside from the message we’re hopefully sending in the 2019 council races, how do we fix this? It’s not like just anybody can decide they’re mad as hell, not going to take it any more and decide to run for judge. Curious.
