Timing…

Because this is a month of holidays…

probably most people will celebrate st paddy’s day next weekend..

palm sunday the following..

and easter the following..

we have one weekend left.. the final weekend in march.

something tells me there is something planned then too.. but i can’t remember what, so will keep checking.

And sensible shoes got hip (what looks more sensible than Doc Martens?) Either sensible or orthopedic. So I’m just fashionably confused.

Good for you House, but dang it! I knew your identity from the Westwood rock-throwing coverage on tv and was feeling pretty smug that I was keeping your secret. Now I feel like Clark Kent is waving his cape and I’m Lois Lane :( Thanks for sharing though – seems to have encouraged others to do the same. Greetings, I am wondering on streets like those in the Admiral/California area where there is a house (or townhouses), then a sidewalk, and then a narrow strip of grass, then the street, who owns that narrow strip of grass? Is it deeded to the house, or does it belong to the city of Seattle?

It seems that homeowners are expected to do upkeep on it, but my question is whether there are property rights to that strip?

Congratulations! We had a baby at the end of January and took several classes at Highline Hospital in Burien. I recommend calling them. Their website has some info. We took a birthing class, breastfeeding, and “conscious fathering.” This week I start a “Baby Steps” class for new Moms. I’ve been really impressed with the staff. Good luck..

Our kids are 4 and 8. Most of the time we get babysitting for “free”–that is, we do exchanges with other friends who have kids. When we do pay, we pay a teenager $8 an hour. We also know a couple of professional nannies–women in their 40s–and when we use them, we pay $15 an hour. Sorry I can’t give you anything more specific for a 3-month-old–it’s been a long time since I had one! I’d say $5 an hour for a teen who is experienced with babies.

The folks behind PEPS (Program for Early Parent Support) have just announced Little PEPperS, starting this spring in West Seattle, for parents with babies and toddlers (through 3 years old). Ahead, the full announcement, including how to sign up:

Are you ready to come and play? Are you ready to meet other parents with infants and toddlers (0-3 years)? Come and wiggle, squiggle and giggle! Join us at our West Seattle location where over the year, there will be 4 sessions to choose from. Each session is 11 weeks long.

A professional group leader oversees fun and informative morning activities for parents and their children. Special emphasis is on parent support, parenting 1, 2, or more children, pertinent discussion topics, singing, play and interactive activities. Come and bring one or more children. Still pregnant with #2 or 3? We welcome you!

kayleigh.. you are wrong about the stretch pants.. by the time you need the sensible shoes the stretch pants aren’t so appealing.. that is if you happen to catch sight of yourself walking past a reflecting window:)

and i did cut my hair.. it was thinning (ok.. more than a bit) and it took too long to dry.

i think of the middle aged look as convenience clothes… maybe not the image we might like to have of ourselves.. but never the less.. comfortable.

My hubby smoked the tires on the minivan… once. he doesn’t get to drive if he does it again:)

i love my minivan and want to keep it.

“Clinton/Bush dynasty”… what dynasty?

have you not noticed that they don’t happen to be members of the same party and the legislative goals of the two were somewhat opposed… We had 4 years of Bush the father.. got smart… had 8 years of Bill Clinton… hampered by a republican congress… and then 8 years of Bush the son.

There is no dynasty there (at least not in the Bushes themselves) in spite of all the hype. In fact, Bush the son has followed policies that have to make his dad cringe.. since they are policies he wisely decided not to follow.

the Political advisors who were in both Bush White Houses.. now that’s a different story…

And any Democratic nominee will share democratic advisors from the Clinton White House… those are “party” jobs…

You speak of a family dynasty.. but the real dynasty is that of the political parties and the staff they pass on to each president.

as for wanting to bring the 90s back… i don’t think so. Hillary isn’t advocating the 90s. She is advocating taking steps to return to both decency and prosperity.

the idea that a new (even inspiring) face is what it will take to create change is bull. Inspiration is only the first step towards change… then you need an intimate knowledge of the system.

the future is always built on the past and a good understanding of what brought you where you are gives you a much better understanding of what might have to be changed to get someplace else.

so.. you believe all of that was something she manufactured? That’s one take on things i guess… but i thought that was a Republican notion…

Having paid attention to politics during that time.. i would say she/they were the target and she didn’t have to manufacture anything. Blaming her for that is like blaming the poor pedestrian who happened to be in the crosswalk when the drunk hit her…

is this the first political campaign you have actually paid attention to? I don’t ask to put you down.. but so far this is the least negative campaign (even primaries) i have ever witnessed in 40+ years of paying attention to them.

One of the benefits of a primary is that the “dirt” is exposed on all candidates before they match up with the other party’s candidate… that hasn’t happened in this campaign. And that’s really not a good thing. While it might make everyone feel better about the process it makes the democratic position ultimately weaker.

One of the benefits of Hillary is that she has spent the last 20+ years of her life under the most intense scrutiny i have ever seen of any public figure. There is unlikely to be anything more to uncover. It will all be an old story.. rehashed once again.. but made less potent in the light of the current administration’s antics.

Whereas.. no one has looked very closely at Obama’s legislative dealings and we know he came from one of the most corrupt political systems in the country… Chicago. Do you honestly believe that his record is so clean that there is nothing for the republicans to uncover? One of his old campaign managers (i think… i hope that’s all he was) is under indictment right now for some pretty underhanded dealings.

I don’t think we have done Obama any favors by not getting anything he may have lurking out into the light… and allowing him the chance to deal with it in a less negative environment than the one he might face in the fall.

Primaries have a dual purpose.. and that is to see who can gain public favor (and both candidates have) and to see who can stand up to the scrutiny of a campaign.

If there is no scrutiny (what you would call dirty campaigning), how will we know? Because that isn’t the way it will be in the general election.

does this meant that you think she will run an actual campaign and try to defeat her opponent? yup.. i think she will.

She did earn the right to run by working tirelessly for her party for 40+ years. She built a political organization.. she solicited donations.. and she has been working herself ragged during her campaign. Quite frankly.. she looks like she needs more than a nap lately.

Where does any of that become entitlement?

That’s the second time you have equated Hillary Clinton and George Bush. Not good. Not good for your party.

You are a democrat! Stop repeating Republican talking points and concentrate on what works about your candidate.

Your sole argument is that you are ready for someone a little more inspiring.

You can simply say.. Hillary does not inspire me…

and you believe Obama would make a better president.. then say that.

But this divisiveness needs to stop “for the good of the party”.

When the dust settles… it’s going to be up to the losing side to help elect the party’s nominee.

Will you be there if it isn’t your candidate… or will you have convinced yourself she doesn’t deserve to win and hand the presidency to the republicans?

We’ve done it before.. we can certainly do it again.

ooooh yeah, JoB! I have a personal credo- so that I don’t end up one of “those ladies” with umpteen dozen handbags – every time I buy a new handbag I have to either give one away or sell one. So, I bought a new Beijo last week…and I have a Beijo to get rid of – and this seems like a fun way to do it! For those of you unfamiliar with Beijo (www.beijobags.com), they are simply the best bags for our weather and they are gorgeous to boot! (ooh, boots. now if I could only do something about my shoe collection…)

JanS thinks it might float so before i go work to make it happen i thought i would toss it out for reaction.

Handbags for hunger…

many of us have handbags that looked so promising in the store and turned out not to work so well in our real lives. Some of them are really nice.. but now neglected handbags…

i thought we might get together at some public place.. have a few drinks/snacks and bring handbags which could be sold at a flat $5 each or in silent auction for a $5 minimum… and donate the proceeds to the local food bank before the end of the month so the dollars would double.

anybody besides us think some variation on this this might be fun?

What do you do with too much time on your hands? You do a content analysis of WSB Forum and imagine a composite individual who embodies all the worst qualities a West Seattleite could imagine. If I was handing out awards, it would go to … the “name-calling condo developer who bulldozes old growth trees and whose unleashed pit bull has a taste for baby coyotes in Lincoln Park.” Your nominee?

That happens here in Westwood when the fire dept checks the hydrants. Funny enough – that seems to happen on nice days!

If you are worried you might call your local fire house and see if they are checking hydrants in your area. It usually takes a couple of hours for the sediment to settle out again.

I don’t think most Obama supporters want to ‘destroy her’ – I think she’d be a fine nomination and president – I just think Obama is a better candidate. I’m tired of the Clinton/Bush dynasty and I’m ready for a fresh start. I really don’t want to relive the 90’s and am not delusional in thinking that Hillary will be able to bring back the economic prosperity that Bill enjoyed. I know you probably haven’t fallen for the ‘bring back the good days’ thinking, but a large portion of Americans have. The 90’s are gone and it’s time to look to the future.

I have ‘stopped and considered’ (as you requested) why some people want to ‘destory’ Hillary. I think a lot of Obama supporters are offended by the utter hypocrasy of her campaign tactics over the past 3 or 4 weeks. Please understand, it has absolutely nothing to do with her being a woman. A woman president would be fanastic, and long overdue. And it has nothing to do with how much worse the smear campaign will become once someone is nominated and has to go up against John McCain.

She spent the last 4 years of her time with Bill in office propogating the notion of a ‘vast right wing conspiracy’ based on Republican lies and smears. Then she turns around a rips a page right out of the Republicans playbook by playing to people’s fears. She’s turned her campaign around not by talking about the issues, but by resorting to fearmongering and smear tactics. We expect this from Republicans, but it’s her utter hypocrisy that makes it so egregious in this case.

And I also don’t think it’s good for the Democratic party. Now that the campaign has gone negative, both Hillary and Barack will be so beaten and bloodied by the time that one of them is nominated that neither will be in good shape to take on McCain. before you know it, you’re asking people to turn down their music and watching PBS: middle age has arrived.

(okay, I watch PBS, but that’s my only middle-aged sin so far. I don’t care what Oprah says; I’m not cutting my hair, either.)

I hear you – I hate saying what I drive.

I found some temporary car paint that is supposed to stay on until you wash it off with the special soap. It’s not supposed to damage the paint (like that matters on a mom-mobile!) I really want to do a flame job on my van just because! Maybe the cat artist could come over and “pimp my ride!”

yes… i too used to be a subaru wagon driver… it wasn’t the snazziest of images.. but i did like what it said for my values…

but the seats killed my 6″4″ husband’s back and the newer ones didn’t get the fuel economy the old ones did.. and my doc said i HAD to go to an automatic… AARGH…. and my geriatirc dog couldnt get in without help and that was killing my back…

so after sitting in everything in an auto show.. i bought a used minivan:(

which turned out to be a blessing… and it’s late for it’s next date.. so see ya all later. i’m going to lunch.
