JoBParticipantrs261..
if you are looking at commodity prices.. things look like they are improving… and they may be.
if you are looking at what has happened to your food bill in the last year or so.. or the last decade… not so much.
the thing i like about the farmer’s market mentality is that commodity futures are measured in farmshares.. and buying one guarantees that food will be grown on the land using sustainable practices and … as long as anything grows, you will benefit.
even better.. i can invest in the small community gardens, do good and still get great food.
I know that the commodity markets are a necessary part of our world economy and i am not anti-market… and i do realize that the existence of favorable futures prices does stimulate production…
but the amount of influence trading future shares in essential commodities has on both production and price does bother me.
Not enough to call you a dirty rotten capitalist though ;~>
the world market is infinitely complex and there are no simple answers.
But it is time that Americans woke up to the realization that they are engaged in a world market and that the practices which make American firms more competitive in that world market may not be practices that are beneficial to the citizens of this nation.
We need a public conversation about how we can best serve the needs of American businesses through legislation and still serve the needs of infrastructure and public services for our citizens.
If nothing else, the latest financial collapse should make the need for that conversation apparent.. that is if we can get beyond panic and sticking fingers in dikes.

GenHillOneParticipantDPD? I didn’t know what peat-settlement prone meant, but this came up
http://www.ci.seattle.wa.us/dpd/news/20080730d.asp
I can’t find a map, which would be interesting because I think this says (because of a high water table) buildings could get the parking and/or height restrictions loosened if they are in the prone zone.
September 19, 2008 at 5:00 pm #639400JenVMembergreat Dave- I will be there protesting the protesters at the abortion clinic! keep your religion out of my womb, thanks very much.
September 19, 2008 at 4:57 pm #639399DaveMemberIt’s great to see so many voices concerned over the pain of that can arise through spanking.
As a fetus can feel pain in the womb, the abortion process is an the apex of pain inflicted on young ones(some disagree with the statement, but the arguments are philosophical without proof – we do know that fetuses react strongly to physical stimuli).
I think I’ve come to the right place to advertise participation in an upcoming protest of a local abortion clinic (totally peaceful, we’re not the crazy zealot type). Let’s stand together against needless pain inflicted on children!
More info to come – looking forward to your responses!

in forum Open DiscussionJenVMemberPutting the feelers out there – would everyone be interested in another meet up? I was thinking West Seattle Bowl would be a fun place to meet and that way the younger members and people with kids could come too. Plus, West Seattle Bowl is just generally a great place to be! I could show off my skills- skills that get me beat by my 4 1/2 year old niece on a regular basis…
The West Seattle Bowl has a full bar, a Chinese restaurant and also accepts pizza delivery. Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon! October 5th and 12th are the best dates. Weigh in with your opinion and let me know – I can get it set up with the alley as soon as I have a general headcount.
Cheers!

WSBKeymasterI just searched the City Code for that number
http://clerk.ci.seattle.wa.us/~public/code1.htm
and nothing came up. Who did you get notification from and what did it say you had to do about it?
September 19, 2008 at 4:40 pm #639398JoBParticipantPeople are asking privately why I got involved in this.
It’s too easy to say that i know first hand the damage that systematic spanking.. which often gets out of hand.. can do to children.
It is more than that. I really think that Christianity is at it’s strongest when Christians are offered a wide range of information and allowed to make their own minds up about what they believe and why they believe it…
It saddens me that anyone would use the Bible to promote child rearing practices that have been proven to be detrimental to the well being of children… and profess that this is the only way to raise Christian children.
I don’t know what Mars Hill Church teaches it’s parishioners about child rearing, but i do know what Tedd Tripp writes in his books and i know that those books are available in the Mars Hill libraries.
For those that point out that Tedd Tripp has more to say than spank your child, i would point out that he has scheduled an entire hour at the end of his program… where a speaker drives home the messages of his program.. to spanking.
What can you possibly have to say about spanking a child that would take an hour to say?
I just think the parents that attend those seminars need to learn what other Christians have to say about raising children.
And i think it’s time we had a public discussion about children and discipline…
To spank or not to spank isn’t the only issue.
I know that it’s easy to say that it is their own business how they raise their children… and to a large extent, i agree. But when how they raise their children produces adults who impact our society negatively… then i think it is imperative that they are at least exposed to better options.
I think a good child is one who knows how to make good decisions. Tedd Tripp thinks a good child is a submissive child.
In the long run.. i would rather have a somewhat unruly and questioning child that makes good decisions for himself and others than a submissive child whose only choices are to submit or rebel.
This is just what i think and what motivates me.

DunnoParticipantAfter traveling around the country and reading this blog I’ve come to this conclusion.
Everything wrong in this world is King Bush’s fault. Companies in the US are made for one thing, screw the little guy.
Best way to get elected, promise something like change, that could change these things above, that will likely change.
Thats it in a nutshell!

that by the way… is being felt very keenly in Ballard. I think they will have the larger protest tonight.

rs261MemberFDR’s new deal has been debated by economists as speeding the recovery as well as lengthening it. I dont think there is a definitive answer on if it helped or hindered the recovery time period.
I see the economy from a financial trading standpoint as well as the farmers market standpoint. I just realize that just because corn prices reached a peak price of 8 dollars a bushel in July, those prices are more readily noticeable now. However…now that the prices are 5 dollars a bushel, I have a feeling that those prices will be reflected in the december farmers market. Granted September last year they were around 4.50 a bushel… and peaked around 5.50 in june 07.
I think most people hear prices on the news, and hear about the riots…and keep that in their mind until they next hear prices which doesnt happen often when they return to normal levels. I see the market price, as well as the final product price, and realize it takes time for the price move (up or down) to get to me. And I for one at least know what to expect 3 months down the road, and can plan accordingly.
Wheat prices have also dropped back to “normal” levels at around 7 dollars a bushel…vs the $14 they were in Feb and march of this year…which again…do you hear about the tortilla riots now?
