Are you sure that Julie was smoking inside before you came in? It is possible that she was correct and not lying as you say.

I have been going to there for over 7 years. The Classic Barber Shop is just that, a grubbly little shop with little character whose barbers smoke when they do not have customers. They light up outside, the shop sometime reeks, and the smell lingers on them for sure, if you have been going there as long as you say you know this already. Not a favorite habit of mine but I have not seen anyone smoke in the shop for a while now, probably since the law was enacted. I hope that you return and tell Julie in person why you are choosing not to return as it would probably be much more effective than questioning her honesty here.

Obviously you will need a new shop, I would suggest Illusions, as they pass the sniff test of the WSB.

I won’t suggesting that the Classic Barber Shop is totally in compliance with the smoking law. No doubt someone else will come along to admonish her for stepping out onto the street or alley to smoke, which happens. And, yes they will soon be gone, but to suggest they don’t care is unfair. They are good folks who support the community, stop in sometime and ask. There are not many small shops left and I doubt they will be able to afford a new space in the junction when there time is soon up.

I usually don’t read these rants because it just seems to be sport to rank on local businesses which may not meet peoples anticipated level of service. Such as the recent ranking on Aaron’s and Alki Lumber. Yes, they are not Gregg’s Greenlake Cycle or McLendons Hardware but they have their own unique niche in our community.

The rest of you haters can go to Supercuts for your mullets and up-do’s.

I just don’t understand where ANYONE gets off telling others what kind of medical procedures they can or should have.

I do not personally believe I would ever have an abortion, but that should be something that each person decides on their own and will have to deal with their choices.

I did donate money to Planned Parenthood last night in Sarah Palin’s name and a card will be going to the Alaska Governor’s mansion in her honor. I will also counter protest any clinic in West Seattle that is protested.

I went to school with Penny and her murder was in one of Anne Rule’s books. I think her murder was around 1971, we were in 8th grade I think. She was supposedly walking home from Hancock Fabric around 9pm. whatever happened, she was found raped and hanged by what was Bethlehem Steal on Avalon. that’s the best I remember. She was such a sweet and kind young girl.

First, I want to thank everyone who responded with offers to help Chiquita. She is home today with Joyce, her original foster mom, recovering from her spaying and vaccinations.

As I explained in my OP, Joyce is here in W. Seattle from Arkansas visiting her daughter. Joyce recently lost her husband of 40+years and traveled here in June with her companion Taz, a young chihuahua. Tragically on the car-free day on Alki, a worker left one of the downstairs doors open and Joyce’s beloved chihuahua Taz got out and has not been located as of today. Needless to say that Joyce has suffered two major losses in the last 5 months.

Even though searching for and holding out hope for a return of Taz, when I called Joyce looking for an emergency foster home for Chiquita, Joyce agreed without hesitation to care for her temporarily. However, she indicated that she would not be able to adopt due to limited financial resources which prevented her from getting Chiquita the necessary shots and spaying that she needed in order to fly her home to Arkansas.

As things go with dog lovers, Joyce and Chiquita have indeed taken to each other, and with the resources and financial help of Pamela Brumell, our local feral cat rescuer, Chiquita has now received the necessary medical care and certificates to officially be adopted by Joyce and carried back to Arkansas. Joyce’s daughter has also said that if Taz is located at this point she will arrange to have Taz transported back as well.

Even though I’m not very religious, I always believe that where one door closes, another always opens. I think that even though the loss of Joyce’s husband and canine companion is so tragic, it was meant for Joyce to be available when Chiquita needed a new human family. So all is well.

One last item though: Pamela Brumell has initially covered the $91 in vet fees for the spaying and vaccination. However, I promised her that I would ask those that responded with offers of financial help to assist her in paying the bill. I realize $91 isn’t alot, but I figure if just a few of us could give $10 or $20 it would cover Chiquita’s expenses.

Two people e-mailed me about this, which fwiw is a faster way to get us if you want to, than the forum, although I should probably rig some RSS reader for alert to new posts. I’ve been listening for quite some time and there’s nothin’ – at 5:40 pm our friends at another site across town alerted us to a “silent holdup alarm” at First Mutual but there were no police there when we went by to check after covering the Mars Hill protest, so I’m pretty sure it wasn’t robbed (police wouldn’t clear that fast). Nothing on 911. We did see a USCG chopper around 5:45 but it was heading west toward Vashon – TR

Too bad people can’t get so passionate about stopping the deaths of 17, 18 19 (and more) year-old boys and some girls. These are young kids, just out of high school, flush with life and vitality, innocent, precious children, really. They are sent to hell on earth, witness to maiming, rape, sodomy and torture. More than 4000 of these children have been killed. Do they feel pain? Is there any question? Many more of other nationalities have been killed. Many thousands more are injured, and the pain they suffer and will suffer puts your conceptual fetus pain to shame. This is happening today, as we argue theoretical are-they-viable-or-not woowoo about embryos.

Almost every woman I know has had an abortion, including me. There’s no reason to feel bad about yourself, and you certainly don’t have to justify it! You don’t have to explain. (although I empathize with your heartfelt and moving stories) I don’t like to see women taking a defensive posture for doing something women have done for hundreds of years, and for doing something that, oh, yea, is legal! It’s painful to see women buy in to the antichoice tactics.

and ps, if it ever becomes illegal, we can go to any other civilized country in the world to get one. (The penalty for abortion in the 3rd Reich was death.)

irukandji…thank you for sharing what must have been a horrible situation for you. I had a similar experience in my teens…I was 17, on a “date”, but did not become pregnant. It was the summer of 1964, and abortion was illegal. If I had become pregnant, I can only imagine that I would have had to give birth to that child. Pro-choice to me means that my daughter, your daughters, everyones daughters, will never have to be faced with that proposition, if it ever happened to them. They will have a choice, as long as it’s legal.

Men want into this discussion….I’m not sure why. They will never experience the horror of being raped and getting pregnant from that rape, and having to decide what to do. I have never been in the position of having to make the abortion choice. Knowing myself, I don’t know if I could do it…but that doesn’t mean I’d want to take that choice away from another woman.

There were two very quiet protests tonight.. one at Mars Hill church in Ballard and one at Mars Hill church in West Seattle.

although very few people who were entering the church were interested in any alternative information, quite a few of those who drove by honked, waved and said thank you.

We three made our point.. and I will do so again tomorrow at noon in Ballard…

This effort opened a conversation in Seattle.. and i am having conversation by email with many who responded to my personal email…

altogether, we achieved more than i hoped to be able to do.

Second, it is insensitive. What you say is a “fact” is simply not true. You have absolutely no idea what the medical conditions of the family were at the time and yet you make a blanket statement. You also on the one hand keep insisting that abortion is taking a life. The fetus in the situation Sue writes about had died. You really want to force someone to carry around what you consider to be a dead person inside them for two weeks? That doesn’t sound very much like a “culture of life” to me.
