+1 for Elliot Bay. + 1/2 for Luna Park I used to really enjoy burgers at LP, but they seem to be going downhill.

For those of us that fully understand that UV rays are bad but like to soak up some fake sun before going on vacation pay special attention when signing up for those “specials” at Fastan.

    Here’s what happened to me:

Between 8/14/2006 and 12/7/2006 I purchased Tanning sessions from Fastan on Fauntleroy. I went into the store today (12/27/2007)for a session and was told that my credits had expired. Like rubbing salt in an open wound I was then told that if I wanted to sign up for an additional package, I would be credited the expired tans. I remember thinking, “so let me get this straight, I didn’t use all the tans I previously purchased, but if I buy more tans that I probably won’t use, then you’ll do me a favor and give me back what I already paid for.”

I expressed my disappointment in their policy with hope of some good explanation by the sales representative but only got what appeared to be a well rehearsed response of “we tell all of our customers that they expire

While I was in the store, I noticed that none of the advertised specials that were prominently displayed mentioned that the credits would expire after any set period of time. When I inquired as to why there was no written disclaimer, the sales representative told me they verbally tell customers at point of sale and that it is stated in the contract that is signed. I asked to see an example of this contract where it was stated in writing that my tans would expire and wanted to see where I signed acknowledging this, and they could not produce one for me. If I wanted a copy I was then told that I would have to get it from their corporate office. What is most confusing is that some of my tanning credits are set to expire in 1 year while others last two years. At no point in time do I recall this being explained to me, as I would have been reluctant to purchase as many credits as I did. I’m not really into tanning but go before vacation so I don’t burn on the first day when exposed to sun.

In the end I asked for the regional manager and was only given a first name and a phone number which I later learned was their Burien location. When I asked for the managers last name, i was told that she didn’t know it. Seriously, who doesn’t know their boss\managers last name. Anyways, I’m done with Fastan, they may have gotten my unused tanning credits but lost a customer.

Anyone have a good recomendation on where I should go for fake sun?

Hmmm, thanks. I just checked it out and there weren’t many recs on their for gyms and/or trainers. The links didn’t work.

I guess I will have to just research it out myself. :-(

MissK – before we moved RRRs to the Forums, we did have a thread on which some recommendations were requested and made, just a few weeks ago – check out the comments here:

Lucy,I agree…I much prefer Luciano’s over Amante’s. And Luciano’s now has a website where you can order online – love the hummus and spinach salad :)

Not the junction, but Luna Park makes a good burger too – I’m partial to their Gut Bomb Burger – as healthy as it sounds :)

We had to replace a sewer line, and some drainage, a few years back and used RayMark. They aren’t in West Seattle, but we thought they were fantastic. Little disruption of our yard, the job was done on time and UNDER budget. They also improved my great-aunt’s sewer system and made the previous company come back and fix their mistake, for nothing! Great people!

Looking for good burgers around WS, particularly take-out. Fries optional. Alaska Junction optimal. Thanks!

I like them. The format took a little getting used to since they’re very different than other forums I use, but they’re easy to use and it’s nice to be able to start a topic about something without hoping that you start it first, or hijacking another topic for something else. I’d love to see a “back” button though, or something to back to the main forum page – I didn’t find it instantly intuitive to click on the topic name to go back.

I really appreciate all the time and effort you put into the site!

There’s a place that has been there about 6 months called the Golden Thread and it is across from Corry’s drycleaner on California. In a small building on the left if you are going West down California toward Admiral. She did a great job, very professional and rates were fairly reasonable. She is my new tailor and I used to drive to the U Village!

For installing a new water heater we used Brennan (http://www.brennanheating.com/), and we were very happy with them — professional, fast, and reasonably priced — but I don’t know if they do what you need done.

I have heard great things about Guy Nelson from CBC Plumbing, but when I tried to hire him for something, he was too busy — perhaps a good sign.

    Hello,

As the New Year comes upon us so do the resolutions. I would like to kick start my fitness routine. I would love to find a gym or personal trainer that is in West Seattle. I belonged to All Star a few years back. I would like to get your take on the different gyms or your personal trainers. Also if you could include the cost that would be great too.

Thanks so much and Happy New Year

I am so-far quite satisfied with the message boards. I have for some time been looking for a place to communally kvetch about the ridiculously long east/west traffic-light at California and Charleston. Now ‘the Blog’, as it is referred to be my close circle, has given me this opportunity.

    Keep up the good work

Beacon is decently priced (they don’t charge an emergency surcharge for weekend work like most of the big ones) and very professional. We’ve used them to fix an internal flooding issue, but never for upgrades or remodels.

If you’re just doing hot water heater work, you can try some of the services that specialize in water heaters, like Action, Fast, or Benla.

Ken’s Lawn Service will do both routine maintenance and specific one-off jobs. I think their recurring service is limited to just cutting the grass; I don’t know if they offer complete landscaping on a routine basis, such as continual gardening. But we’ve used them for annual pruning and clean up and they did a great job.

For larger trees, we’ve also used Davie’s Tree Service. They also did a great job trimming back one of our larger trees so that it continued to thrive after the trimming.

We ended up enjoying an excellent Christmas Dim Sum lunch at House of Hong, along with the rest of Seattle that wasn’t cooking at home. The ID was much busier than expected but well worth braving the other non-traditionalists and waiting on a table. :)

Hi- A neighbor of mine had the same beast or maybe a cousin of yours-

… and he had it done by Mendoza Landscape 206-767-4695 Noel Mendoza. I got their card as they seemwd reasonable and trimmed my apple tree for me while they were in neighborhood-

As someone who works at the corp. office of said coffee co, I can tell you for a FACT it’s not a marketing ploy. It happened once a couple of years ago as a fluke thing, and the story filtered up to the powers-that-be, who decided it was a good story to put on the cups for the Holidays, to inspire people to “Pass the Cheer.” Apparently its working, as we’re hearing about it from multiple stores, multiple times a day. Buying the coffee of the person behind you in line is just a nice gesture, and a way to really make someone’s day for a couple of bucks.

On a similar note, there was a man named Jerry who used to stand at the corner of 1st and Spokane every morning. I often got caught at the light, and would chat with him and give him some breakfast or a buck or two if I had it. One day I gave him a $5 coffee card I’d been given as a gift, and he got tears in his eyes. He said “every day for me is about surviving. I get a little money, I get a meal, occasionally someone gets me some new shoes. But coffee. Good coffee is a luxury, and I haven’t had it in a very long time.”

We also have a tradition in my family of buying the salvation army bellringers a hot chocolate if it’s chilly out. Just bring them one, and see the reaction.

OK, so it took awhile to go through the register/password/DNA test to get logged into the forum, but it sure is great to be here.

Cruiser, I feel your pain, especially #3. I call it “giving me the hey”. If I let you in, especially in thick traffic and you’re yakking on your cell phone, all I ask is that you give me the hey. A tiny little wave in the rear view mirror, it’s not much. Just an acknowledgment that somebody saw you, realized you needed a break, and gave it to you, whether you deserved it or not. If you give me the hey, all is well in the world, the cosmic karma remains in balance. And we all need that this time of year, right? So a big “hey” to all you out in WSB land.

    nekonoir,

We’ve used Mrs. Kim’s alterations (I don’t think that’s the name of the shop, but she goes by Mrs. Kim) a block north of Cafe Ladro and the dog grooming/sitting place FKA The Tail Wag on California. She’s done a good job on everything we’ve taken (my suits and shirts and some stuff from my wife), and I’ve only had one minor issue with an alteration she did on a shirt. I think she’s just alterations and garment repair.

CMP, I’ve eaten at Ho-Win twice. It’s functional. Not the best, not the worst. I wouldn’t say to run there, but you could do worse.

I think my issue with chinese restaurants though is that chinese food in NYC/NJ is *very* different than chinese food here. I think I’m searching for something that doesn’t exist here, like good pastrami. So I tolerate it here and then when I’m back there I eat myself sick on it. :)

Funny, I’d say the Alki Starbucks is by far the best in WS. Admiral is 2nd best, though the staff there can be snarky at times. Worst by far is 35th/Avalon DT, followed closely by the Morgan Junction location. All my opinion, though, of course.

Right there with you on this. Southcenter is pure, unmitigated Hell.

There is a lady who has been behind me in stores twice now, on two different days in two different Westwood Village stores, singing Christmas Carols. Just as I was sighing a breath of relief that they weren’t playing overhead for that 5 minutes, she started up. She had a nice voice; I’m just over the Christmas music. (bah humbug, Grinch I am)

Shout out to three folks I encountered tonight also at Westwood Village. The first one was a mother and daughter team at B&N. I walk with a cane. Daughter (4-ish?) was heading toward me and Mom reeled her in a bit so she didn’t smack into me. Daughter pointed and asked “Mommy, what’s that?” Mom replied “It’s a cane. People use it to help them walk better.” So many parents “shush” their kids when they’re asking perfectly normal, natural questions about the differences between folks. It’s nice to see one answer in a matter-of-fact way.

Both of the other two were at QFC. I was exhausted by the time I got there. It must have showed. A kind man using a scooter back near the butcher asked me if I wanted a lift, which made me giggle.

I asked an employee where-the-heck they were hiding the raisins, as I’d been around the store 3 times, and down the baking aisle each time and hadn’t seen them. The woman not only went and got them for me, but then offered to carry my basket for me to finish my shopping. I must have really looked as tired as I felt. I’ve been fighting a pretty major medical issue, and tonight was a night where the “above and beyond” as well as the touch of humor were just so appreciated. It really made my night.

Just back from hell on earth..Southcenter I need to do this, bear with me my top ten peeves

    1)Drivers not using turn signals

2)Drivers using turn signal like a magic wand

3)If I let you out into traffic, acknowledge the fact, take your big mac/starbucks/phone/kid or whatever the hell outta your mouth and wave thanks.

4)For the love of your God or any God please learn to parallel park, if you can’t, get the bus.

    5) At the store don’t wish me a nice day or say have a good one, we all know you don’t mean it so don’t say it,ok?

6)If I’m at the checkstand why ask me if I’ve found everything I was looking for??? If I hadn’t I wouldn’t be checking out fool.

7)It’s Christmas,ok. Christmas. Nothing else ok?? Christmas. Not Holidays,or happy season or whatever the hell it’s Christmas ok?? Get a ladder and get over it.

8)If I’m walking towards you on the sidewalk, don’t look at your shoes, open your gob and say hi.

    9) No I don’t want another damn cell phone, christmas tree, red candle, frozen turkey, fruit cake, gallon of egg nog, christmas card, candy cane or Christmas pressie especially if you want me to buy you one back.

    10) Oh yeah number 10, I really, really hate people who make top ten lists:)
