Well our DVR is a rental from Comcast…another one of their scams. I’ll have to check out Direct TV, further. GHO, we have the same problem with bundling. It SUCKS. I wish there were a third company. Sooo frustrating. We have a neighbor with a HUGE radio tower. I hear it interferes with broadcast signals. I don’t see any dishes on our street. :(

Where have you been looking and what methods are you applying?
WS does seem more family oriented. As far as I can tell, I’m the only single person on my block, the rest are couples/families. My girlfriends and I tend to go out most Friday nights to do the drinks/dinner thing around WS but I’m sure it’s difficult to approach a table of women even if we are sitting in the bar area. I’ve made it a mission to occasionally go sit a bar for a drink or a meal on my own and see if I can successfully strike up a conversation with whomoever is sitting next to me. Sometimes a bust, sometimes some great conversations.

But i have done some closet cleaning and since my closet space was cut 3/4 and my closets were stuffed.. i have a fair amount of clothing to donate.
if anyone wants to make the get together a collection point for this.. please bring gently used clothing with you to the brewery.. we can transfer it to the back of my minivan and i will take it where it needs to go.
i know.. no old lady duds.. but i suspect that black and white t-shirts and most sweaters and jeans and.. are pretty generation neutral and could as easily be worn by a teen as by me.. not to mention jammies and slippers and shoes and….
there is a whole wardrobe i have been holding onto for when i lost weight…
maybe losing the clothing will prompt a weigh shift:)
it’s more likely that walking the dogs more and eating less will work better.. but at least the clothing won’t be hanging around reminding me that i didn’t meet my goals.
and maybe i will get to the garage to dig out those unused sleeping bags and flashlights as well… i can always hope…
if not, i suspect they will be as useful after christmas.
i have been in migraine hell off and on for a few weeks now and find it hard to keep up with the day to day stuff..
but… we are definately coming to the holiday get together whether i have a migraine or not…
it might not be a good idea not to talk politics with me if my eyes look a little unfocused or i am squinting… both signs that i might be just a little cranky… i don’t have much patience when i am cranky :(

I wont even miss On Demand, other than having Spongebob at my fingertips whenever needed. They NEVER update the On Demand programming, and I feel like I pay a lot of extra dough for something that frankly sucks. I hope DirectTV is a good alternative – do you need a dish for that? Or is it similar to Comcast? Also, I have 2 tvs – will I need 2 boxes? Thanks all you DirectTVers out there for any info.
I have Dish and it is just fine. As long as direct and dish are competitors, the services, price and offers should be about the same.
Here in some WS neighborhoods, the frequency pollution is so bad you might need the attenuator to get the radio remote control to work properly with either company.
I fled comcast after they refused to fix the signal drop after the 06 windstorm.
Saved quite a bit too since I dropped the premium channels and just download shows I want from an undisclosed location.

They couldnt give us answers. They continued to blame it on the wind but our neighbors who had DirectTV didnt have that problem. Because of their lack of resonse to our problem with paying a bill when we didnt have the TV we switched. Since we switched we have not lost the signal with DirectTV.

i fried three slices of bacon this morning and then scrambled my eggs in some of the grease.
your review was excellent.. that is exactly what the bacon tasted like. In addition, i would like to say that it crumbles beautifully.. and that it is so rich that three pieces was too much.. even shared with the pups.
both dogs sat attentively while i fried the bacon, served myself and enjoyed my breakfast.. they stayed in a sit stay on their own until i put their dishes down with a bit of egg and bacon mixed in their kibble..
this is not normal behavior for them.. they didn’t have to ask if what i had was good.. they just knew and weren’t going to do anything that would deprive them of their opportunity to share.

later today i am going to drizzle some in maple syrup or honey sugar and bake it crispy … pepper it before it cools and crumble it for salads after it has chilled.

All of the cable companies are crooks.
Back when I was a kid, you could get at least 7-10 different channels “over the airwaves” here in seattle.
Once they went in with the local cable providers and had to run local stations on cable, They turned their broadcast power down to the point where everyone had to get cable just to watch local broadcasts.
Now here is my other beef with cable. This day in age, you can watch anything you want “on demand” and sign up for NFL, NBA, Nascar packages and there is no problem.
How come I cannot choose the channels I want and pay by how many I get? I mean really. I would pay for Discovery, NICK, Disney, TLC and maybe E! and thats about it.
Imagine if you could pay for, lets say, 10 channels, your choice. 20 channels, your choice. ect. you would be much happier huh?
But I cant, so “F” them.

Hi, everybody…flowerpetal,I didn’t get your PM. Try mediamaven@clearwire.net. As far as price…only have a couple of thousand to spend…probably three at most. Naturally, I’d like to get the best value for that amount…if the universe sent me another little old lady’s car with about 100,000 miles that got over 25 mpg I’d be delirious with joy. Of course, in my dreams I’m driving around in a red convertible etc., etc….just dreaming, you know. And oh yes, my 94 y.o. mother has to be able to get into the front passenger seat sodoor must open wide and not be too low to the ground. I could probably afford a small finder’s fee too, if somebody finds the car I buy for me.

This morning I spoke on the phone with my 85 year-old Northern Italian grandmother who lives in Boston. When I told her that last night I was selling bacon from the trunk of my car I wholly expected she’d wonder aloud if I was OK…would ask if I needed money… maybe question why I was squandering an Ivy League education. Instead, I got a warning:
“You’d better be careful,” she said. “I knew a couple of guys back in the old neighborhood who got pinched selling things that ‘fell off’ the back of a truck.”
When I assured her that I was not trafficking in stolen goods and explained the circumstances by which I had acquired the bacon she then proceeded to tell me that I was going about the deliveries all wrong.
Nana: “Didn’t you have a paper route when you were a kid?”
Me: “Um, yes. What does that have to do with this?”
Nana: “You should deliver it that way….early in the morning so the people would have it in time for breakfast.”
I laughed and thanked her for her advice, reminding her that we have a lot of creatures around here who might get to the bacon before the people did. But maybe my Nana is on to something. It would be sort of retro to wake up at 4:45 and ride my bike around West Seattle with a big canvas bag of bacon slung over my shoulder. I’d test my skill at throwing the bacon across the lawn from the street, landing it perfectly on each doormat. And for anyone with a mean dog I’d deliberately throw high so the bacon would impact the front door with a satisfying whack that would wake the whole house.
Yes that Nana is a smart one I tell ya. Always thinking.
I put off switching for years for the same reason. Thought it would be a huge hassle. Wasn’t at all. You can order and schedule an installation appointment online. From beginning to end it was a flawless transition with outstanding customer service. Something I never received in the 20 years with comcast. I love DirecTV and will never, ever, ever go back to cable.
FYI, I have both analog and digital TV’s. Looks great on both.
I’m part of a network of twin families that are looking to set up 6 weeks of music times for our kids in January. Our kids range in age from 18-21 months and we all live in West Seattle. For me, as a parent of toddler twins more formal programs such as Kindermusic are impossible to attend as there are two of them and only one of me to control the chaos. Plus, the cost for two tends to be prohibitive. So, a few of us families are looking to band together and set something more informal up to expose our kids to music and allow for some interactive time for our budding socialites.
Here are the logistics so far: We are hoping to find someone for Wednesdays at 10am. Probabaly 30-40 minutes per week. We are hoping to schedule 6 weeks beginning in January. So far we have 6 families committed and would love to pay about $10 per family/week or $60 for 6 weeks – this would be about $360 for the musician’s pocket total. This fee is negotiable however.
The right musician doesn’t need to have an arsenal of kids songs but know some music to keep them engaged, have appropriate lyrics, and allow them to clap or bang along is all that we are looking for. Also, any interested musicians need to meet a couple of the parents ahead of time to make sure we have found someone appropriate to hang with our kids, and further discuss logistics and expectations.

After telling us for months that if you “are currently connected to Comcast, you don’t have to worry about a thing” when the digital conversion takes place in February – still says that on website – they are now saying that anyone with basic expanded cable (most of us?) and an analog tv will need a box to be able to view channels above 30. They will provide boxes for up to three sets, after that, boxes are $1.99/mo. So not only is it a pain in the a$$, but you may need to pay additional monthly charges if you have multiple sets. Will upgrading your service to digital cable (also additional charges) work if your tvs are analog? Can you imagine all of the customers looking for and installing these boxes between now and February?
We planned to live with analog tvs until they died, then upgrade as needed. Now I feel like Comcast is either in cahoots with electronics manufacturers to move merchandise, LOL – sort of, or sticking it to their customers, again. I really do hate Comcast.
Safe n Sound Swimming. It’s on Westlake in the basement of the China Harbor restaurant. Yea, that sounds weird, and it’s a haul, but it’s the best lessons in town. 15 minute private lessons, and way more than you would ever get in a 30 minute group scenario. My kids are great swimmers, and I know it’s because they have the sns foundation. Everything they teach is about safety and proper technique.
