celeste17ParticipantI don’t drink either. But I still go to the functions for the people and the laughter. So come and join us non-drinkers for fun and food.

mellaw6565MemberI appreciate the invite and would like to meet many of you, but not sure I can handle a brewery as I’m allergic to beer (yes, no joke) and sometimes the smell of hops can be a little nauseating.
And I never said I don’t drink – I do in moderation and mostly wine or foo-foo drinks. I think a bottle of wine or alcohol can sit around my house for a year or more without touching it. It’s part a diabetes thing and part that I have a low tolerance for it (I get happy, fall down and want to take my clothes off after 2 drinks – good date but lousy public company). I usually find more naturally grown items to entertain me instead of alcohol:)
As for x-mas, I’m not a fan and usually don’t celebrate it. I’d rather travel – one of the benefits of living in Asia was not having to be bombarded with xmas stuff for months on end. So I’m mildly tolerant of the useless and disgusting display of materialism in this country during the holidays and steer clear of huge parties and displays. I especially hate not being able to escape the music anywhere for the next 30 days – puts me in a bad mood.
I do like the idea of the donation for at-risk kids and so I will try to come by. I believe we have dinner with out-of-town friends at Wild Ginger that night, but I’ll see if I can squeeze in for a short meet & greet:) I’d like to put faces with names.
December 3, 2008 at 4:47 am #647977
mellaw6565MemberJoB – I would also add books on that list, especially the new Twilight series and other vampire chronicles for older students. Not sure of the age range for your group, but often at-risk facilities for kids don’t allow them to check out books from libraries, etc… because of fines, etc… if the books are lost. So any books they can keep would be great.
December 3, 2008 at 4:48 am #647978
JoBParticipantmellaw6565..
if you find that you won’t be able to make it and still would like to add items for the homeless kids.. let me know and i will be glad to pick them up for you.
i would rather you used that as an excuse to come by and say hello.. but understand allergies well:(
December 3, 2008 at 4:53 am #647979
celeste17ParticipantI think we all understand allergies. If JoB can’t meet up with you I can. Let us know.

ErikParticipantceleste – my dad owned a retired german shepard police dog. his name was schultz.
December 4, 2008 at 8:27 am #647986
celeste17ParticipantErik-my brother is a retired King County Sheriff and he once was a foster parent to a German Shepard dog that was to go into the K-9 program but unfortunately the dog was a wash out from the program so he lead a life of luxury as a family doggie.

JoBParticipanti am really looking forward to this get together…
i have already collected more gift cards than i expected.. i hadn’t realized how often i go to the store…
and have started collecting for Seattle Education access… including looking for twilight books..
and am committed to making a huge dent in the storage boxes in the garage this weekend… a scavenger hunt for sure…
and will hit costco this weekend for at least one package of diapers..
i am pushing the limits of what we can do this year and having a far better time doing this than i have ever had shopping for family and friends.. who will get mainly my time this year.
lucky them ;~>
lucky me to get to hang out with people for whom i have both affection and respect.. even though i have yet to actually meet some of them:))
i love the holidays.

soclwrkrinmotnMemberBeing as I was ungrounded, here are some more places:
There is Treehouse for Kids
http://www.treehouse4kids.org/howyoucanhelp
Treehouse was founded to help foster kids just be kids. Last year, more than 4,300 foster kids in our community used Treehouse services. And with services and state budgets being cut back, more help is needed. Right now, if you have stylish gently worn or new clothing to donate to the Wearhouse (a free clothing shop for foster and homeless youth) or toys for “Holiday Magic,” I know they would be welcome.
And as a board member of Seattle Education Access–an organization I wished existed when I was in the system–we also are finding services for youth trying to get to college, or even finish high school are getting tighter and tighter.
When I asked them if there were other things needed, their response was if we are talking about the organization itself: school supplies, computers, school snacks, good books (social justice and activism books ARE VERY WELCOME, as they also have an “activist school” teaching youth to self-advocate and advocate for the community and equality) and other similar items. For the kids…JoB’s list holds….
*blush* and no fan clubs or I WON’T wear a Santa hat….

celeste17ParticipantMy Church (Our Lady of Guadalupe) has a tree up in the lobby that has tags for items needed or requested by Treehouse for kids. I picked up two one is for a toddler ages 2-4 and the other is for a boy age 5. I picked up a pair of jeans, a sweater and two shirts for a toddler girl and a pair of shoes and a couple of small tonka trucks for the 5 year old. I have a hard time buying for the older kids because they want the more expensive toys that right now I can’t afford. Hopefully Treehouse gets everything that they want. I know that Kiro was having a radio-a-thon yesterday and today to benefit Treehouse.

JoBParticipanti didn’t get the garage cleaned out yet:(
But i have done some closet cleaning and since my closet space was cut 3/4 and my closets were stuffed.. i have a fair amount of clothing to donate.
if anyone wants to make the get together a collection point for this.. please bring gently used clothing with you to the brewery.. we can transfer it to the back of my minivan and i will take it where it needs to go.
i know.. no old lady duds.. but i suspect that black and white t-shirts and most sweaters and jeans and.. are pretty generation neutral and could as easily be worn by a teen as by me.. not to mention jammies and slippers and shoes and….
there is a whole wardrobe i have been holding onto for when i lost weight…
maybe losing the clothing will prompt a weigh shift:)
it’s more likely that walking the dogs more and eating less will work better.. but at least the clothing won’t be hanging around reminding me that i didn’t meet my goals.
and maybe i will get to the garage to dig out those unused sleeping bags and flashlights as well… i can always hope…
if not, i suspect they will be as useful after christmas.
i have been in migraine hell off and on for a few weeks now and find it hard to keep up with the day to day stuff..
but… we are definately coming to the holiday get together whether i have a migraine or not…
it might not be a good idea not to talk politics with me if my eyes look a little unfocused or i am squinting… both signs that i might be just a little cranky… i don’t have much patience when i am cranky :(
December 9, 2008 at 10:07 pm #647993
JenVMemberJoB – I have a friend who will be bringing some clothing donations.
December 9, 2008 at 10:29 pm #647994
celeste17ParticipantShould we bring the kitchen sink also? It seems we are collecting everything the poor and or homeless could use. :)
December 10, 2008 at 2:41 am #647995
JanSParticipantoh, the crankiness…we’ll have a table labelled in the corner for that…I may just join you..a friend and client (one in the same) asked me this morning if I was OK, because I seemed extraordinarily cranky today – lol..
December 10, 2008 at 2:50 am #647996
celeste17ParticipantYou cranky no way! You were just going through Bacon withdrawal.
December 10, 2008 at 3:03 am #647997
JanSParticipantDecember 10, 2008 at 7:00 am #647998
JoBParticipantJanS..
thanks.. i needed that..
Celeste17
did one of the local agencies request kitchen sinks? OMG i must have missed that :)
too heavy for me anyway..
December 10, 2008 at 7:50 am #647999
celeste17ParticipantLOL! well I figured that if we were collecting canned goods, gift cards, diapers, books and clothing we should have a kitchen sink.
