  • I am sick of all the traffic revisions/changes to our roads that provide no incentive to carpoolers. Why not have them as HOV/Carpool/Bus lanes? A petition was started to do just that.

Seattle City Council: Turn all Seattle “bus only” lanes into carpool lanes. – Sign the Petition

    Please join this campaign: https://www.change.org/petitions/seattle-city-council-turn-all-seattle-bus-only-lanes-into-carpool-lanes?share_id=qXgqkmgPKi&utm_campaign=mailto_link&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition

The recent conversion of vehicular lanes on heavily trafficked arterials such as Highway 99, 15th Avenue, and others from standard lanes to bus-only restricted lanes has exacerbated traffic problems, increased congestion along alternative routes, and surely increased idle pollution as a direct result. Changing our city’s bus-only lanes into more flexible bus/carpool/HOV lanes will incentivize drivers to reduce energy consumption and will lighten congestion in high-traffic areas – especially where bus-only lanes receive light use and where Seattle has provided no other incentive for individuals for whom riding a bus is not an option. A strategy whereby our city prioritizes bus ridership may sound appealing when spun as a catalyst for sustainable behavior, but our recent changes ignore the reality of Seattle traffic at the expense of our citizens’ sanity and our local economy. Join us in making your voice heard!

Found this recommendation on the WSB (Aurora/Edmonds). Had them do the work a few weeks ago. They were prompt, professional and didn’t make a mess. As far as I can tell they did a good job.

    I’d call them again.

Singular – oddly reassuring and yet maddening to hear you mention that. State B&O tax hasn’t gotten any more rational. We pay many times what other news organizations do because the state classifies us with advertising agencies and gambling concerns … (And it can only be changed by the Legislature. A legislator tried to help last year. Somehow a newspaper-industry lobbyist got involved and that was the end of that.)

That aside, I just came here to note that we’re still getting new info about the end of the strike. Ongoing archive category:

    https://westseattleblog.com/category/waste-management-strike

But the details of the deal, though now ratified, have NOT been reported anywhere publicly so far as I have found, yet.

It’s a great weekend to add a furry family member or two! Kitty Harbor will be open 12 – 6 pm, both Saturday and Sunday for your meet ‘n’ greet pleasures. Approx. 17 adults and 60 kittens are just waiting to charm you.

    Kitty Harbor’s phone # is 935-1919.

Address: 3422 Harbor Ave. SW, West Seattle

    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/#!/kittyharbor

    Website: http://www.kittyharborseattle.org/

These cats and kittens come from rescue situations. Approximately:

    • 1/3 come from King, Peirce and Snohomish Shelters (off of death row)

    • 1/3 come from Kitty Harbor’s own rescue work in our local area

    • 1/3 come from Eastern Washington where the Kill Rate is 70% – 90%, depending on the area/County.

Here are some recent examples of how rescued cats and kittens found their way to Kitty Harbor:

    1. So far this season, Kitty Harbor has taken in 9 – 10 mothers with litters from people that did not want them any longer OR found the domestic mother in their yard with babies. All mothers stay (generally in foster), with their kittens until they are 8-ish weeks old. Once the moms and kittens are neutered/vaccinated/tested/etc., they are available for adoption through Kitty Harbor.

    2. Delyn, Founder of Kitty Harbor, is partnering with a municipal shelter that has a very, very high kill rate of cats and kittens. This shelter has no money or resources. In just 7 weeks she has taken 28 cats and kittens from them that were slated to be killed.

    3. There is a store in an Eastern Washington town that has a big cage for people to drop off cats and kittens in. These felines are altogether in this cage; don’t know each other; fight; are often sick. There is a rescue group that pulls as many of the cats and kittens from cage as they can every Sunday. When Kitty Harbor has room, they accept the overflow.

    Rainier,

You are absolutely spot on. If dogs and cats are clearly, visually identified, it is much easier for the average person to help them find their way home, or just confirm that the cat hanging out on your sunny sidewalk lives two doors down and is not a stray.

The single, most effective pet identification method is a tag on a collar that includes your pet’s name and your current phone number. It is your pet’s first line of defense and a free ride home! If someone finds your pet, they call you and your pet never enters the shelter. If your tagged pet does end up at a shelter, it will be safe and warm until the shelter calls you. Without any identification, (tag, microchip, license), the reunite with owner rate for cats is less than 3% and for dogs it is between 13% – 15%. This means that 98% of lost cats and 85ish% of lost dogs never return home.

Although collars and pet id tags do come off/are sometimes lost, they are still the #1 way lost animals are reunited with their humans. Studies by Ohio State University (Vet School) and other Vet Schools/Organizations reflect:

–75% of cats will keep their collars on

–80% of pet owners believe it is important for pets to wear a collar/id tag, yet only 33% provide their pets with this form of id.

    — When used, micro chipped pets have the highest return rate. In a recent 2011 study, it was found that less than 5% of pets are micro chipped. This number is starting to increase as shelters and rescue groups start to microchip their animals prior to adoption.

–#1 problem with microchips is that people don’t keep their contact information updated. If you change your phone number and/or address, please remember to update the microchip registry.

–When indoor only cats accidentally get outside, they usually hunker down because they are terrified and need to be trapped. Sometimes these scared cats are mistaken for feral or as under socialized strays and end up at the shelter/ a rescue group. If they had on a collar with a tag (and micro-chipped as a backup), they would be returned home.

All of the above reasons are why Furry Faces Foundation recently launched our new pet retention program, ‘Tag Your Pet…It Ain’t Graffiti’. We want to increase the likelihood of all lost animal companions being reunited with their people. A generous supporter donated a new IMARC pet tag engraving machine to our group so we are now providing quality, aluminum pet tags for just $5.00 each. Our goal is to make pet id tags very affordable to the average person and to provide a collar and tag at no charge to pets whose people are financially restricted.

    https://www.facebook.com/furryfacesfoundation?ref=ts#!/events/461329507220286/

Whether you purchase your pet tag from us, a pet supply store, or online, please consider always having a collar and pet id tag on your pets, even if they are indoor only because indoor animals get out.

    Cheers, The F3 Gang

As noted here last week, 99 closures will be in the Sunday-Thursday 9 pm-5 am overnight pattern for most weeks, for the next couple months. With some exceptions. Example, here’s our list for the next eight days:

This week’s road closures: 99/Viaduct, Spokane St. Viaduct, I-90/Blue Angels

Since the Spokane St. Viaduct has a couple overnight partial closures coming up, the 99 closures will skip those nights.

Otherwise, the non-regular 99 closures (like the one tonight) are usually announced a week or so in advance – we had first word of this weekend’s plan on July 19th. The very first place they USUALLY appear is this melding of city/state closures:

    http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/constructionlookahead.htm

We watch these things very closely and always strive to publish first word of major closures as soon as we spot them somewhere.

WorldCitizen, you remind me that the Rat City Rollergirls haven’t been back for a while with their dunking booth.

And for Betty T – if you like the art cars, keep an eye out here in West Seattle around Fremont Fair time – they have made appearances here the past two years! Last year, Feedback Lounge hosted a gathering. This year, they had an unpublicized rally that brought in tons of tips once they were spotted parading around town – the night BEFORE the Fremont Fair.

Hey, all … As both a longtime Summer Fest co-sponsor (which doesn’t mean we plan it, just that we support it) and community journalist, wondering if you would care to share:

    1. What do you WANT to see, then? Please offer suggestions so the folks who spend the whole year planning it can consider them. (Or e-mail info@wsjunction.org …)

Five years ago, in the relatively early days of WSB, Dave Montoure asked if we would pose the question to the then-readership, what do you want to see? (Here’s what they answered: https://westseattleblog.com/2007/03/think-summer ) … I know planners are always interested in feedback.

    2. What is exciting at other festivals that you don’t find at WSSF?

From the perspective of having to pretty much *live* Summer Fest, by choice (we could just sit home and not spend 26 hours helping answer questions in the info booth, but it’s fun!) – here are some of the things you MIGHT have missed.

-Many people have griped to the Junction Association that there’s not ENOUGH local business participation. This year, indeed, it looked like more. The mix included businesses that are not in The Junction, such as Avalon Glassworks from Luna Park, PInk Gorilla Games from Morgan Junction, a couple that come to mind.

-Local food too – The Swinery, Matador, Bang Bar, Freshy’s, Pizzeria 22 sold food as well as the usual visiting “deep-fried pb&j” and “strawberry shortcake” types.

-At GreenLife, presentations ranged from “Backyard Beer Making” to an Occupy West Seattle speakout about the economy (and I’m sure they wouldn’t have kept opposing viewpoints off the stage)

On the Alaska Stage, events ran from the Police Vs. Fire wing-eating contest (hey, in Ballard it’s just people stuffing their faces with lutefisk, ew) to Caspar Babypants to belly dancing …

    And that’s just a sample.

Seriously, let the Junction Association know what you WANT to see/experience, if you’re not finding it.

And if you’re really looking for something different … next year half the east side of the south block will be a construction zone. Maybe there can be a fence-art contest. Just kidding. Sort of.
