September 8, 2015 at 1:14 am #827585In reply to: Ways to help Syrian Refugees
Michael WaldoParticipantA man went for a walk by the river. He came upon quite a scene. Babies were floating down the river. Many people were wading into the river to pull the babies out. He took in the situation and started to run up stream. “Where are you going” the people cried, “we need your help pulling the babies from the river!” The man yelled back as he headed upstream: “I am going up river to find out how the babies are getting into the river and stop it at the source!”
The river is Europe. The people pulling babies out are the governments of Europe. Syria is where the babies are entering the river upstream. We have to stop the babies from entering the river.
September 8, 2015 at 12:04 am #827584In reply to: Ways to help Syrian Refugees
Michael WaldoParticipantThe only way to help the Syrian refugees, is for the entire world to stop the fighting in Syria. The U.S., Europe, the UN, need to come up with a plan and do it. It has been going on for 4 years. Enough is enough.

MSNBC? They’re getting closer and closer to the fright wing as we speak…lol
September 7, 2015 at 10:29 pm #827062In reply to: RANT: Living Next to a VRBO
mtnfreakParticipantWhale, one of the rant rules is that you need to contact the owners first, and it would undoubtedly help your case if you had said you had in your first post. Now you just sound like a crotchety old codger.
But I do sympathize.
Its my understanding that Airbnb and VRBO are required to pay B&O and sales tax if they rent for three or more times, for less than 30 days each, in a calendar year.
That’s the only requirement right now for vacation rentals like this.
My source is Seattle Weekly’s article from two weeks ago:

mtnfreakParticipantI had no idea that the Swell had changed owners! You’re right, this is shame. Explains the new menus too.
I wonder if a letter writing campaign might make them change their minds.
September 7, 2015 at 7:48 pm #827195In reply to: The Donald Trump phenomenon – opinions?
JTBParticipantSmitty, Au contraire. The press adores Trump because he pulls in viewers. I think it’s incredible that his press conferences and speeches are being aired routinely by een the likes of MSNBC. I think think it’a all about ratings/viewers and right now a lot of public is fascinated with him. It’s probably also true that many are simply interested to see if and when he makes a spectacular fail. But I don’t think the press is trying to “get him.”
September 7, 2015 at 7:25 pm #827194In reply to: The Donald Trump phenomenon – opinions?
SmittyParticipantEven if half those things are true of both Hitler and Trump (they are not) the key one is this:
“Hitler was also able to get the press to reveal him in only a positive light. Getting citizens to admire him for his wealth and prosperity, benefiting off a newly founded celebrity culture.”
The press (conservative and liberal) cannot stand him and are trying to get him at every turn.

JKBParticipantSo the J. Edgar Hoover era was quite a while ago. I do think standards of what’s acceptable have changed. But it’s hard to point to any effective watchdog or check&balance, and simple trust has been abused more than once.
Good news: I don’t see any claims of infiltration or spying against Occupy or BLM, let alone evidence to back them up. Or maybe they just haven’t been caught.
Bad news: the level of profiling and tracking available now from public data is probably better than J. Edgar got through spying. It can amount to legal intimidation, and the chilling effect on free speech is a real problem.
Where does one draw the line? We really do have some bad people out there. And we know that power has always tended to be abused, at all levels. I’m not sure what criteria to use in balancing those.
September 7, 2015 at 6:09 pm #827600Ms. SparklesParticipantI voted for Charter Schools because I had some delusion that it would be a mechanism for the teachers to take control of their schools and get out from under the incompetent thumbs of SPS administrators…. I didn’t even consider these corporations coming in, so 1. I was wrong, sorry fellow Washington voters and 2. I’m really thankful that the state Supreme Court is correcting my mistate.
September 7, 2015 at 5:22 pm #827599waynsterParticipantYep charter schools are worthless money pits that caterer to those who think their kids a special….The republican controlled senate doesn’t want to fund public schools fully… oh how they want to fix the charter school system I say no deal … why should we spend money on a privet school system who think they are public aka charter schools when we can’t spend it on public schools …..Voted no for this very reason its was unconstitutional from the get go….

dobroParticipantI’m not familiar with this incident (links?) but I will suggest that you shouldn’t necessarily believe everything you read. Its been noted that the FBI and other LE agencies infiltrated and spied on Occupy Wall Street and BLM. From living thru the 60s and 70s I know for a fact that federal agencies have a history of doing such things and using false actors to discredit movements of which they disapprove. Google up Senator Frank Church and the Church Committee for more references.

JanSParticipantreading this discussion and thinking that the written word is so more often taken the wrong way than words spoken face to face. It’s easier to anonymously hide behind the keyboard. It’s a good reason to have meetups in the community every now and then to get to know each other face to face. It often changes opinions about people. We did it last year in October…a picnic at Lincoln Park. Was great fun. And another meetup in the near future. Guess we’ll have to make sure there’s a BIG invite to everyone, and see how many show up :)
And now back to your original programming.

JanSParticipantslime…say it isn’t so…Scott Walker? Ted Cruz? Mike Huckabee? Rand Paul? yep, that’s just to name a few of the slimy.
According to one person on NPR, it’s Hillary’s to lose, or being replaced by Biden. Bernie Sanders was never mentioned, as if he doesn’t exist. And if any of us had to list the ideas being put forth by O’Malley and Lincoln Chaffee, I think many would be saying “Who”? We need to get our asses informed by Next March 29th, for sure.
September 7, 2015 at 9:21 am #827189In reply to: The Donald Trump phenomenon – opinions?
JanSParticipantand running in the GOP race #2 spot today…another misinformed man…Dr. Ben Carson. He may have been a good and smart brain surgeon, but he has too many off base ideas and opinions for me. I think he’s entirely out of his element.
September 7, 2015 at 8:12 am #827515HMC RichParticipantCall me crazy but the speeches by the Supreme Leader, Head of the Revolutionary Guard calling for death to the U.S. And Israel even before the ink was dry is extremely ominous. Since Hillary pushed Obama to take down Quadaffi (while being egged on by England and France) the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean is worsening. These anti war Democrats F$&ked Up. So why in the world should we trust these Religious Fanatics? BTW – Hillary voted for the war (Remember!).
September 7, 2015 at 3:51 am #827597singularnameParticipantThe discrimination kicks in big time at public schools when your kid has several “learning disabilities” but not “behavioral problems,” in which case student is completely dropped and kicked around the pathetic IEP system, which includes public school-to-school-to-school recommendations, which you trust because you think you’re dealing with a professional and accountable system, and then eventually spend $100,000 over 6 years at a private school to get the services he or she requires. SPS, at least, is pure crank.
September 6, 2015 at 10:34 pm #827638GinaParticipantCould it be something to do with the sewer? Heard something like that when workers were checking for blockages, some sort of micro probe?
September 6, 2015 at 9:22 pm #827317In reply to: Share the sidewalk
JTBParticipantI was walking on the sidewalk today where the bus stop is on Alaska outside of Key Bank. Tight line of people hurridly and impatiently filing onto the bus and no way to get through other than between two people. “Excuse me” was enough to get a slight gap and squeeze through. A woman behind me at the corner had apparently gone through the line closer to the benches and when she caught up with her companion, I heard her say in a dead pan manner, “I feel like I’ve been violated”
I thought anyone on a scooter or using a cane would have to be pretty audible and clear about their intent to navigate that scene.
