Omg I had a close call with a bike on the eastbound side on the 6″ sliver of “sidewalk” next to the steel mill! It was a weekend in the middle of summer. Guy was a hard core cyclist carbon fiber bike and full racing kit on. He had to put his front tire over the side of the bridge to not get hit by traffic. Spooked me so bad! He was inches from getting hit and thrown over the wall. How on earth does a cyclist justify in their head “yes this is where I should be riding”

Then there’s the midnight jaywalkers hopping the median on Aurora in LQA where there’s barely any lights and shouldn’t be any pedestrians on the road because there are pedestrian overpasses! Argh!

Seriously, is a driver still at fault if they hit someone in these situations where you could never remotely expect a pedestrian on the road?

In my experience, Tracy generally does not remove posts from a forum thread or remove a forum thread without first posting a comment about why (except for ‘looking for work’ and ‘rant&rave’ violations, which disappear w/out notice.) Sometimes the thread is left up but blocked from accepting further comments.

Last I heard from TR, the ‘report this post’ function doesn’t work; you need to copy the URL and paste it into an e-mail to report potential violations, such as someone calling someone else an ‘imbecile’ as opposed to calling their idea ‘imbecilic’ (although I think ‘I disagree with your idea because …’ is a much more productive approach to initiating a dialogue.)

I do think the forum rules could be much clearer re: criticizing ideas not people, not blaming the person who is in a predicament rather than offering support, etc. I think the rules could be posted in a more obvious place; some sites require a potential commenter to check a box when they log in to indicate they have read and accept the rules. I would kinda hate to see it go that far on the Forum, but simply having the rules on the login page would make them more visible … maybe when the software is updated.

The wording by the OP (JKB) in the ‘disappearing posts’ thread seemed to indicate that the problem was with home page comments rather than Forum comments; it is unclear whether JKB actually e-mailed TR about this.)* The same ‘behavior’ rules apply to home page comments; the difference is that a) you don’t have to sign in to comment on articles; b) the home page comments are actively moderated before posting while Forum threads are only checked periodically; c) home page comments are stopped after 2 weeks; d) the home page attracts lots of comments from non-WSites and, on controversial topics, non-Seattlites (the vast majority of comments on a recent article on smoke in the sky were from outside WS.)

TR -sorry if I misstated anything.

    *post 1 by JKB:

‘I’ve posted several times to a thread on the WSB home page. They disappear within the hour. Others have successfully posted.

‘Thread in question relates to somebody skywriting “Black Lives Matter”. My initial posts offered that all lives matter. Subsequent posts were about why my posts kept vanishing.

‘So I’ll ask again here in the forum – are we looking at editorial censorship, or repeated technical failure?’

my condo used STS Construction to do a *major* exterior renovation that involved wet rot; I’m not sure if they take on smaller jobs. You might want to check the Sponsors! tab; there are several construction firms that support WSBlog that readers have also recommended.

Unfortunately, the search function on the Forum page isn’t working; if you have the patience to page through the ‘Reader Recommendations’ category, you’ll find previous threads on contractors. Good luck.

They’re alternating Strangelove (possibly the only example ever of ‘Mein Fuhrer’ being funny) with “There’s a girl in my soup”.

I think this is a hidden campaign, Peter Sellers For President. Because if we need to push those Bad Guys around, the Q bomb is just the thing.

I don’t know if it is coincidence or some evil left-wing conspiracy, but GetTV has been airing ‘Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb’ recently. Just replace ‘Soviet’ with ‘Iranian’ and you’re good to go.

anonyme – if I remember correctly from earlier posts, you have an older home. Shut-off valves for washers weren’t common then (heck, w/d’s weren’t common then). If you don’t have them already, I think you can get in-line valves that don’t require a plumber so you can add them when you replace the hoses. True Value or McLendon’s can help with info on proper installation (do you need to tape the threads, etc.)

I also discovered that the shut-offs installed for the sinks, toilets, etc. in my 25 yo condo were cr@p. I would recommend a plumber replace those (one of mine literally fell apart when he tried to close it.) The cost will probably be less than your insurance deductible if they break and flood the place. YouTube has all kinds of DIY videos.

Anonyme – this is the company CondoManagements hired to clean our dryer vents (4 story bldg., vented to the roof.) I have no idea what they charge as owners weren’t billed separately. If they are coming to WS for another job, maybe you can piggyback to reduce any travel charge.

    http://ventmasters.net/

Sears and Coit also do dryer vent cleaning as do some chimney sweeps.

Whomever you hire, make sure the vent hose is properly reattached; I recently discovered my dryer hose was disconnected and a clamp was missing. No idea when it happened, and it could have been when the dryer was serviced, but …

Also, while the dryer is moved out for the cleaning, you may want to change out the 2 washer hoses; they should be replaced every 5 years or so. Cheap insurance against a flood if they break.

Really? You don’t think we know who CBO is??

What you’re not taking into account is the fact that what you desperately want to call “entitlements” aren’t the main issue. The issues are: We’re spending $500+B/yr. on the military and another few hundred B/yr. on corporate welfare and tax cuts, and we aren’t investing in ourselves.

The way you get out of debt as a NATION is to grow your economy. You do that by investing in your people and your infrastructure. We do neither anymore.

The debt number isn’t scary as a percentage of GDP if you’re doing the right things.

Wake the incoherent mumbling (or perhaps it’s more like ranting) is coming from another source on this thread.

Capt. Dave, the CBO is routinely cited when there is a discussion in the media about the long term financial picture for Medicare, for Social Security and for the impact of the ACA on the federal budget.

I’m sure you aware that last January the House GOP changed the accounting methodology the CBO uses to assess the impact of tax and entitlement legislation, but not other government funding proposals, in order to lessen objections to their unrealistic assumptions about the positive impact of tax cuts. There was plenty of talk about that in the media.

The CBO does not assert we are “past the point of no return.” You are confusing your emotional reaction to our admittedly difficult economic position with facts. Our budget and deficit could be dramatically improved with a reasonable tax policy.

Bernie Sanders isn’t a failed communist. He was never a communist. He’s a socialist and he’s had a successful career from the time he was first a municipal mayor.

I do agree with you on one thing, your crystal ball is indeed foggy.

Since I can’t contact her any other way- I just wanted to rant to the lady running by us, who yells “you suck” amongst a bunch of kids and adults out supporting the teachers. Sorry guys. I should have spelled it out. “CBO” stands for “Congressional Budget Office”. They are a non-partisan government agency. They are the head bean counters for the government who have the magic ability to measure and forecast the economic effect of legislative and policy decisions. Think of it as a viewport to where the rubber meets the road with regard to assessing the actual performance of socialist ideology. This is why you seldom hear talk of the CBO in mainstream media because a lot of people don’t want to know the harsh reality. What is scary is the attitude that everything is just rosy until its not.

JoB: What is there not to understand? The US government is already massively insolvent according to the CBO. We are well past the point of no return thanks to all the reckless entitlement programs and stifling regulations inspired by Obama. There is no way to avoid a severe downgrade in the standard of living you now enjoy. The next president will be forced to make some very tough and unpopular decisions to sort out which creditors get paid. The fundamentals of bankruptcy are the same whether it is an individual or country. Everybody but the ultra-elite will suffer from the drunken stupidity of leftist ideology.

I must have missed the part where Obama is singlehandedly responsible for the national debt.

Never mind that Congress sets the budget. But hey let’s make it a partisan issue.

those rules were once stuck at the top of forum topics..

until even more egregious violations bumped them from prime time :-(

there have been a ton of abuses of what is basically a free space that allows this community to exchange everything from suggestions where to find the best pina colada to commentary on the political issues of the day.

considering the abuses, we are more than fortunate that the editors/owners of this space have allowed us to continue.

As for those “posts that are designed to be controversial, or to make readers uncomfortable”.. i am guessing i made one that would fit your definition minutes ago.

I posted a new topic featuring a youtube video that metrognome posted in a political discussion with an “inflammatory” heading … the unelectable emperor has no clothes.. or some such thing.

i hope it’s a catchy title and that the video’s content will spark substantive conversation… because substantive conversation from both sides of the political aisle about how and why we allow blatant lies to stand as truth in political discourse is long overdue…

but you never know. Some people find my sense of humor quirky at best.

I hope it sparks discussion because after participating in nearly a decade of conversations in the WSB forum i can tell you with certainty that these kinds of discussions are something we do well … even if the process isn’t always pretty.

You aren’t the first to want to sanitize the forum to your own standards of acceptability and you probably won’t be the last…

nor, by the way are you the first to have posts “arbitrarily” removed. I am sure there are regular contributors here that haven’t, but even I have had posts removed… and i am really really careful to stick to insulting ideas.. not people:(

bottom line.. WSB is a business that for whatever reason has opened a room in their store for us to sit around and trade ideas.

it’s their house. they get to make the rules. they get to decide when and how to enforce them.

that’s the price we pay for having this great place to play.

i think it’s worth the tradeoffs and i hope you do too.

it would be a shame to lose you before we get to know one another.

“With Trump’s bankruptcy skills, he is probably best qualified to handle the certain economic mess that the Obama administration is leaving to the next several generations.”

i am sorry, but you lost me.

You state that a man who repeatedly files bankruptcy has the skills to clean up what you call Obama’s economic mess?

    Have you thought this through?

are you suggesting we bankrupt America?

Trump didn’t cram down his debt by paying it off..

he walked away from it and left someone else to pick up the tab.

who exactly do you think will pick up that tab here? The middle class is already tapped out.

With Trump’s bankruptcy skills, he is probably best qualified to handle the certain economic mess that the Obama administration is leaving to the next several generations.

However, I suspect Trump is in the early race for publicity and to draw fire away from other conservative candidates that would otherwise be slaughtered by the leftist media. Same goes for the Hilary ruse to draw away scrutiny of failed communist Bernie Sanders. Hillary is too tainted by blatant corruption and incompetence to win enough votes no matter what she promises to give away to the entitled classes.

My foggy crystal ball currently says Trump will probably pass the baton to Carson or Fiorina and end up being a cabinet member to help cram down the debt and free the economy so more people can go back to work. (I think Trump’s end game is protecting his net worth which is linked to the success of the US economy). It’s the idle 38% of the workforce that will probably swing the election away from the socialists. With nearly 50% youth unemployment, I don’t think there is going to be enough low-information voters to cary Democrats in this election.

Escondido: I am sorry to say, but what you have posted is a perfect description of president Obama. I say this because there are far more credible sources on the internet that describe Obama with your list of traits than Trump.

HMC Rich – when you referred to ‘Religious Fanatics’, if you were referring to congressional Republicans, I wholeheartedly concur with that label.

    Don’t forget, Bush43 lied.

As you seem to be channeling Dick Cheney in totally absolving the Bush43 regime of any responsibility for the current situation in the world (Hillary’s responsible for the immigrant crisis? really?), you probably don’t want to click on this link to a video put out by the White House …

funny how Republicans: a) never channel Colin Powell; and, b) are not investigating Colin Powell for using a private e-mail server when he was SOS.

It’s also odd that conservatives never raise the issue of Israel’s stockpile of nukes (estimated at 50 or more but no one knows for sure cuz the Israelis won’t talk specifics.)

    Hi JonD,

Have you reported the loss to West Point Association of Graduates? They maintain a Lost and Found for class rings. I would suggest contacting them as soon as possible.

    http://www.westpointaog.org/page.aspx?pid=309

To the right on this page are links to several other areas regarding rings.

I hate to say this, but you might want to check local pawnshops or any place that purchases fine metals. Don’t forget to file a formal report with the police too.
