Sus, I have more than enough. I just prefer not to spend in on hideous, crappy Hummer House. Modernist, really? Is that the architectural term? I stand by my opinions, and there’s no need for snottiness. A more crowded West Seattle means tons more traffic within area, which means more car pollution, tall blocks of condo buildings block all-too-rare sunlight, more mischief in our parks and public places (graffiti, for one), etc., etc.

Now, I do love West Seattle, but I stand by my views. Nuff said. I don’t want to get into a b-tchfest with you. Ugh.

Gotta admit, though, your first sentence made me smile – reminded me of the Church Lady from SNL. Very cool.

Jeannie: Well aren’t we all lucky to have you as an arbiter of taste for what should and shouldn’t be built in our neighborhoods. Fact is that there is a huge backlog of hideous, crappy houses that ought to have been adiosed a long time ago. And $900K Modernist houses seem to be selling before builders can even finish them. So it appears to me that there are a lot of people who couldn’t care less about your provincial bull**it attitude. There’s plenty of room for everyone in West Seattle, not just the people that you despise because they have more than you.

Last week, a woman on Oregon SW just east of California in a white SUV was having a terrible time parallel parking with one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding a phone to her ear. My wife and I cracked up although I gave a wide berth in getting around her as quickly as I could.

Ignorant probably is an appropriate word because it connotes lacking knowledge or lacking awareness. Anyone driving with a phone in one hand and talking is definitely not aware.

I’m a SAHM and would like to offer some in-home care for a child 3-10hrs/week (flexible, but regular/reliable). I was First Aid certified in 2010, and could get re-certified before starting. I have my own kids as well (age 2, 5, 7, though in school part of the time), so I’m looking for a family that has only 1 that needs care. I’ve been participating in a co-op preschool (with play focus) as a “working” parent for 5 years, which has been great for “experience” in childcare and child development. Let me know if you’d like to explore some options!

I didn’t hear any booms during today’s game, but as I was waiting for the bus across from the College, coming Home from the Car Show, the thought crossed my mind. Not only private residents, but I remember on one occasion three years ago, I was walking back to Transitional Housing, from Uwajimaya, and heard some of the obnoxious booms coming from the football stadium, while it was in full view of me.

The illegality of fireworks aside, it’s ridiculous that people feel the need to set them off for every. damn. touchdown. :-/

jokes aside.. this phenomenon is troubling

the people who are excited about Trump will vote in the next election…

those not so excited about what they see as business as usual probably won’t.

you can’t outnumber them unless we all think preventing someone like Trump from becoming President is important enough to get out there and vote.

Thanks for the video – just lovely. And Wales also gave us Dylan Thomas, Richard Burton, and Ioan Griffud (less talented than Burton, but sure purty! I saw him first in “Horatio Hornblower.)

As for selling and ROI, the problem is that if I ever sold my house, the logical next step wouldd be something in the $700,000 – $800,000 range, and I have little desire to pay that much.

Ah, well, onward. I shouldn’t complain too much; at least I have a roof over my head and I’m living in a beautiful city.

Anyone know why there is a strong sewer smell from Alki up to Genessee Hill? I have noticed this for about 4 days now. ICK!

I’m looking for another mom with a 2-3yo that’s interested in 3hrs a week hands free — she/he watches my 2yo for 3hrs/wk and I watch his/her 2yo for 3hrs/wk. We’re located near Fauntleroy YMCA. Please get in touch and we can talk turkey (i.e. logistics and background). Email me.

I was thinking of starting a rant on here after the massive explosion a few minutes ago, but was glad to see Jo had beat me to it.

This is effing ridiculous. It never ends. My dog is deceased and no longer tormented by this mass stupidity, but my cat was in my lap at the time and left a bloody trail as he went airborne at the sound of the blast. What happened to my right to “peaceful enjoyment” while others freely and openly break the law without consequence?

Ok.. i admit, i am not a hawks fan to start with but i wouldn’t wish defeat on any home team …

if it wasn’t for the way some fans have chosen to celebrate the legion of boom.. with loud booms every time the hawks score :(

one of my new neighbors celebrates every score loudly with fireworks by night and booms by day…

and my dogs whimper and whine and shake and hide under the bed and try to claw their way out.

my vietnam vet neighbor gets so stressed he doesn’t leave the house for days.

no matter how cool or harmless you might think that boom is.. it’s not so cool.

driving neighbors out of their homes on game day and terrorizing animals isn’t an effective way to spread team spirit.

So go ahead and bah humbug and call me a curmudgeon who doesn’t want to let anyone else have fun…

i won’t be here to hear you. I am loading the dog who just had cancer surgery and is facing more into the car with her donut of shame to keep her from reopening the incision and heading up the hill.

and trust me.. you don’t want to know what i will be thinking of those of you who boom away to show your team spirit.

We are new to the area (been here 2 weeks) and I have a Madison 6th grader that needs to get to school. I’ve just started work that requires me to be in Burien at 7am.

I’m looking for an hour in the morning and transport to school/ walk to closest bus stop. This should be short term (about a month), start as soon as school goes back, and we can discuss compensation.

Chloe & I can be reached at 804-638-3688 or via email at Christine.mantegna@gmail.com.

    Thank you!!!

i like the idea of painting the grain silos. maybe like a giant rack of beer cans.

smitty: didn’t paul schell light the aurora bridge for a while? i lived in north QA whenever that was, and it was pretty cool.

turns out that the energy costs were exorbitant, though. so it only lasted a couple of weeks.

the jeanette williams memorial bridge is a beautiful structure, IMHO, and i think lighting it would make the skyline really striking at night.

and with new fiber optic and LED technology, maybe costs wouldn’t be so bad.

well, Wales gave the world half of me; the other half came from several countries (which reminds me of a joke I probably shouldn’t repeat out here.) Wales contributed it’s share of artists to the world, including Gemma Markham:

I still prefer Eva Cassidy’s version of Fields of Gold (and ‘What A Wonderful World’ and on and on) but I enjoy listening to the words in Welsh.

As far as gubmint inefficiency, that argument can go on forever. Of course gubmint is inefficient; it’s run by humans (or ancient alien astronauts in disguise.) Private companies are also notoriously inefficient, even if they are hugely successful. These days, property tax increases are generally due to voter-approved programs. Hopefully, at some point, you will see a massive return on your investment when you sell; being able to hang on to your house long enough to get to that point is the problem.

Thank you, metrognome! At least Wales is pretty and has given the world some wonderful actors! So property values do play a role, but not as significant as one might assume. Still – and I hate to get all Tim Eyman-y, it seems like we give the go-ahead to ever-increasing taxes, but all too often the money is not used properly because of incompetence.

Ancient alien astronauts? Hmmm…Tom Cruise loves that concept!

Jeannie — fortunately for you, property values and property taxes aren’t directly linked; the formula to calculate property taxes is much more complicated than that and cannot be understood or explained by mere mortals. There is a race of ancient alien astronauts disguised as humans who understand how to correctly calculate property taxes (I have that on good authority from the guy with the weird hair that stars on History Channel 2.) Here, translated from their native language, which is almost as hard to understand as Welsh, are some FAQs:

Agggh! My little two-bedroom, one-bathroom house might be flattered to see its “value” leap by tens of thousands of dollars, but I’m not thrilled in the least. Taxes are bound to increase in an equally outrageous manner. I can thank the ugly, boxy $950,000 “Hummer” houses that are being squeezed onto lots in my neighborhood where older homes, aka perfectly decent “teardowns,” once stood stolidly.

I guess this gripe is nothing new, but hold onto your hats, neighbors! It’s only going to get worse.

Jd – not so fast; the right to drive is not an *enumerated* right in the Constitution or any of the 27 ratified amendments; not surprisingly as cars, like AK-47’s, did not exist in the late 1700’s. Our Founding Parents were smart enough to include Article IX in the Bill of Rights to protect rights that were not enumerated.

The Declaration promises that citizens are endowed with certain inalienable rights, including but not limited to, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. It is very easy to argue that in our current culture, being able to drive is necessary for a large number of people to pursue life, liberty and happiness and that the numbers of one-time and repetitive fees, toll charges and taxes placed by varying levels of gov’t, some of which have nothing to do with the vehicle (i.e. taxes and fees to support public transit), on purchasing, fueling and maintaining a vehicle, not to mention insurance requirements, repetitive driver and vehicle licensing requirements and safety requirements that drive up the cost of purchasing and maintaining a personal vehicle are burdensome and prevent some people from pursuing happiness.

Therefore, one could argue that the right to drive is as unenumerated right protected by Article IX.

JTB , a question about the ‘securely stored’ discussion. What constitutes proper storage?

Sometimes I hear this topic from anti-gun folks for whom proper storage amounts to interment in concrete. Like everything else, there are those who would take this point to excess and then enforce it.

Thoughts on what criteria should be applied to define proper storage?

A question: what does the word “ignorant” mean in your post?

Skeeter, I think there are some ways to at least start to get a handle on existing guns. (Let’s assume background checks become more widely implemented and cover all but deliberately illegal gun sales.)

    1. Any gun owner who brings a firearm into the proximity of another human being must be able to produce a certificate confirming they passed a firearm safety class within the last seven (or something) years. Failure to comply could result in either hefty fines or confiscation.

Homeowners who do not take a firearm from their residence are not required to possess the above certification.

    2. Any home insurance policy shall include a provision stipulating that a homeowner with guns on the premises must certify that the firearm(s) are securely stored.

I realize there will be many gun owners who choose not to comply with these regulations. But I think time and public sentiment will constantly shrink that number.

I read about someone having a similar encounter on Tiger Mountain on Reddit recently. Apparently certain times of year are more likely to have issues. Probably when the young are adolescent?
