Local volunteers called Friends of Art on Pier 86 are exploring the possibility of adding public art to the grain elevators located at lower Queen Anne in Centennial Park. This is a big bold idea to add another visual artist icon to the local landscape to welcome travelers by air, water and the commuters that see the structure every day.

The committee received a Parks Department grant for the purpose of conducting a feasibility study – exploring the parameters of the project and to garner public feedback. The study is half way complete, far enough along to be able to share the initial findings and gather public feedback.

There is a community meeting on September 29th from 7:00 – 9:00 PM in the Seattle Art Museum Sculpture Park PACCAR Pavilion to share the initial result of the feasibility study and provide a forum for the community to provide feedback.

If you cannot attend and want to provide feedback, please fill out our online survey – http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/2321874/Pier-86-Public-Art-on-Silos-Grain-Elevators

    Kind of cool.

Having visited Istanbul and Lisbon recently, I would like to see us do some kind of lighting on the WSB as well. Could be seasonal *red/green Christmas) or specific to an event (green/blue for Hawks). Might draw a few people from downtown to come on over and spend some money too! Not that everyone wants that! It’s just such a big structure that could be kind of iconic. Sorry to threadjack.

i like the idea of painting the grain silos. maybe like a giant rack of beer cans.

smitty: didn’t paul schell light the aurora bridge for a while? i lived in north QA whenever that was, and it was pretty cool.

turns out that the energy costs were exorbitant, though. so it only lasted a couple of weeks.

the jeanette williams memorial bridge is a beautiful structure, IMHO, and i think lighting it would make the skyline really striking at night.

and with new fiber optic and LED technology, maybe costs wouldn’t be so bad.
