some people are as freaked out by large groups of oriental teens in baggy pants and what looks like gang attire but really seems to be teen attire these days as they are by the same groups of latino and black youth. or native americans (you can’t call them indians any more… you wouldn’t know who you are talking about) or.. any group of color…

in my day.. (btw.. i hate how that sounds)… back when stereotypes were every bit as prevelant… it was greasers.. brylcream and leather jackets and girls who wore really tight pants and their boyfriend’s sweatshirts or jackets… oh.. and pointy toed high heeled shoes…

but the stereotypes were there.. i just grew up where there weren’t so many people of any color.

however, I can remember my mother having a fit because my little sister held hands crossing the street with a little oriental boy.. the only one in town.. and she was all of 6 at the time… (my sister).

You can hold hands in public now without much notice.. but the stereotypes and prejudices still percolate beneath the surface.. generally connected with fear of anything not like you.

i used the “gang” example because it was easy.. and because it is easier to see that we aren’t so quick to jump to the conclusions of gangs when the kids involved are white.

we should be.. but we aren’t.

And that is racism still percolating…

Training is mostly about training the people who care for the animals, I’ve learned that. Dr Seibert gives lots of literature for you to read, teaches you about diverting attention as well. I honestly think our dog is more mentally damaged then anything, she’s very smart, but will just go on instinct at random times. And really its extremely difficult for me to notice any triggers. Shes fine with some adults/kids, others she wants to bite their heads off. Body positioning goes from at ease to attack mode in a split second. Crazy. But, she’ll get better, its a constant job, but as long as you keep at it, things improve ever so slowly (medication is no miracle cure, it just helps “take the edge off” of the stressful situations). Even on medication, you still need to direct your dog and respond appropriatly to their posture/actions before anything happens.

Ahh, the joys of a rescue. Of course, our other rescue is absolutly wonderful, no problems at all!

I don’t know what Packworks did for our dogs… i can only tell you what they did for us.

They helped us understand what we could do to signal to our dogs that we were in charge when they hit triggers.

and that has greatly altered our dogs behavior.

it hasn’t solved the problems.

I still don’t know what mochi would do with a dog if she wasn’t diverted…

and.. I still don’t have people in to my house and am unable to invite anyone along on excursions if the dogs will be present. My grandchildren don’t come to the house… and the dogs are kenneled if we have visitors.

However.. solicitors don’t stay long with me holding back a lunging yuki:)

this is not the ideal solution.. at least not yet.

But i do see real progress with both dogs…

the biggest thing i see is that both dogs are looking to me before they act out now… and that wasn’t happening before.

the changes in the way we behaved were for the most part subtle… but they seem to have been effective.

I was an effective dog trainer before i met them.. i have trained abused akitas.. and that’s not an easy task.. but these dogs are as close to a wild animal as they get and i don’t think i truly understood the implications of that before i met gretchen…

nor did i understand some of the finer points about the way they had worked out their own pack issues… they divided responsibilities between them…

I may still have to end up with medication because i refuse to be isolated by my animals.. but for now we make progress and have hope.

the only place i found them heavy handed at all was with us… and my husband disagrees with me on that…

they were incredible with the dogs.

I know black men had the right to vote before any women. The 19th amendment in 1920 gave women the right to vote.

The 15th Amendment gave black men the right to vote in 1870, but many decades would pass before that apparent promise became reality.

Thwarting the measure’s intent were a number of actions by states that sought to keep blacks from the polls.

For example, some states required blacks to pass literacy tests before voting — a hurdle not placed before already-registered white voters. A Supreme Court decision overturned that tactic in 1915.

And poll taxes, aimed largely at discouraging minority voters, remained legal until adoption of the 24th Amendment in 1964.

Again it wasnt until the 1960’s. Granted women still arent treated as equals as far as pay or respect in many business fields.

I know there have been and will continue to be discrimination against women, and blacks. Our part is not to buy into it and treat everyone like they should be….as people. I try not to look at sex or race as a defining trait of a person, and I look forward to the day when people dont see that as their defining trait as well. Sadly, that day isnt here yet, but we’re getting there.

Really, I’m just waiting for the aliens to land their spaceship so that we can all pass laws against them. (cause discrimination against space folk isnt bad at all!)

but you are right.. in another 40 or 50 years if we are lucky.. this will all be ancient history… as many young people already believe it is.

i have been quoted out of context so many times that i am testy about that little practice.. it makes such good headlines and is so difficult to refute…

you are right that Geraldine is a grownup and should have realized the sharks are out there… and it’s easier to watch for them in prepared remarks.. but answering questions is a different matter… and we can often get caught up in a thread and don’t analyze each sentence as it comes out.

A more gracious approach.. had she had a real chance to make it.. would have been to apologize that any remark of hers taken out of context had offended…

One of the things i like about her tho is that she is not so gracious… women should be able to be curmudgeons too…

Your main point that we would all do better to back away from the media hype and concentrate on what we believe in is well taken.

I am sorry your candidate didn’t survive the primaries.. i think this would have been a better election for you if he had.

But voting for McCain in the fall won’t support any of John Edward’s ideals… in fact… that vote would tarnish them.

If you can, step back from your private battle with Hillary and take a look at the bigger picture…

my hubby can’t… but even he will capitulate in the fall if Hillary is our candidate … given the alternatives…

Our household would have been a happier one if Dennis had survived the fray… someone we could have both believed in.

They do train police dogs locally and for the german obediance course trials…

we are saving Dr Seibert and medication as a last resort… if we have to go there.. we will.

Thanks for the heads up tho… what i found when i started this thread was that those of us who take on the harder rescue cases have a really difficult time finding resources…

boarding.. grooming… vets… training…

and when one of our resources fails to handle our dogs.. the most common advise is putting the dog down.

i knew there had to be more out there.. so i have kept looking…

Dr. Seibert, the only veterinarian board-certified in animal behavior in the Seattle area

for emphasis….THE ONLY.

In this state anyone can call themselves a dog trainer. (Much like Interior Designers…who in most states need to actually get an education for Interior Design, not just pick out some colors, or sell some furniture…but thats a different rant)

Jeff Tinsley is a horrible trainer for truly problem dogs in my opinion. Best person we’ve found is Dr Seibert

Dr. Seibert received her Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University, and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Tennessee in 1994. After three years in general veterinary practice in New York, she returned to school to pursue Master’s and PhD degrees in psychology from the University of Georgia. She also completed a residency in clinical behavior, and is one of 37 behavioral specialists board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. Her research has focused on psychopharmacology in behavior practice, parrot behavior problems, feline housesoiling, and canine noise phobias. Dr. Seibert currently offers behavior counseling at the Veterinary Specialty Center, a multi-specialty veterinary referral center in Lynnwood, WA. We have a rescue thats lab/sheppard mix, and sweet as can be to us, but suffers from past abuse issues.

In fact how many of us are truly comfortable just walking through a crowd of latino, oriental or black teenagers on a street corner.

and at my own causcus, i saw a woman of color treated in a dismissive manner when she supported Clinton while a young white woman was listened to attentively…

the woman of color was speaking for clinton and was polite and respectful. the young white woman was speaking for obama and was not.

it was subtle… we all chose to ignore it (including the woman of color) .. but it was there and it made my heart hurt.

Women gained the right to vote in 1920, segregation ended in 1968. Give it another 40-50 years and race wont be that big of an issue anymore. Until then you bet race will matter, and Obama will use it to his advantage. Just like I’m sure no one will bring up McCains time in a prison camp. You have to tiptoe around certain issues if you know they will be used against you.

You cant tell me spending 5 and a half years as a POW being tortured hasnt had any effect on his mental state. But you think anyone will bring it up? hell no, he’s a american hero because of what he did.

Hillary lost my respect by trying to legislate my parenting (violent video game law, of course I’m biased and use to work for one of the companies that made these “violent” video games), and by staying with her cheating husband for political gain (perhaps she truly “loves” him, but I dont get that from their relationship).

Obama hasnt done anything to lose my respect YET, mudslinging is part of the game. Hell I vote for republicans often to give them a chance if I dont have any reason not too. Everyone will use what they can to their advantage, now and later as they should. They’re running for president!

Ferraro made the comment “If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman [of any color] he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”

Where in that statement do you see “in part”. Those “in part” comments were made afterwards. Granted I dont see her whole speech/comment in text, just what the press dishes out. She should know anything she says will be used by the opposing side, in the current situation, the opposing side is the Obama campaign, she lived it 20 years ago.

This is a campaign that will have to be very careful the whole time, primaries, presidential race, all the time. Democrats and Republicans will have to choose their words wisely or get hammered on every little detail.

The key for everyone is not to get caught up in the press/media storm and vote based on what you believe in, Hillary, Obama, McCain, are all GOOD candidates, and believe it or not, I’ll be happy no matter who wins. I just hope they all have good VP candidates, cause I see a slim chance that the VP could take over no matter who wins.

Who do I want to win? Obama, who will I accept winning? Either one of them. Hillary or Obama would both be a great president, and I do hope we get a great president, one way or the other.

I bought a house here about 15 years ago; before that, I rented an apt. in Wedgewood for a couple of years. Before that, Rhode Island. Before that, New York, St. Louis, Spokane. Despite the ugly townhouses and the increased traffic, West Seattle is still my favorite neighborhood. Love being near the saltwater.

We had parents at Admiral Heights http://www.merrillgardens.com/loc_community.php?id=1 back when they first opened about five or six years ago. The threshold for acceptance to the most independent level then was the ability to sit and stand without assistance, and to get from a sitting to standing position unassisted. I think there are different levels of care, with different costs, of course. Our parents were in the most independent level, but over time one died, and the other had to get help with medications and laundry. We loved the proximity, and we liked the facility a lot. It was brand new then.

The staff seemed very nice and caring, usually, although they seemed to suffer from a lot of turnover. We attributed that to the fact they were a brand new concern, still working through staffing issues.

I thought overall the folks were very well cared for. There were a lot of activities for them to partake in. There were many different locations they could escape to…. a library, a computer room, a nice deck area, a sitting room, and even a dining room in case they wanted to invite family for a special meal.

I picked up the first lot of bags today.. and there are definately some high end bags in this group!

I was following JanS’s link to McCain when i found this… on Geraldine Ferraro…

“In a letter to Clinton, first reported by CNN, Ferraro says:

The Obama campaign is attacking me to hurt you. I won’t let that happen. Thank you for everything you’ve done and continue to do to make this a better world for my children and grandchildren. You have my deep admiration and respect, Gerry.”

The back-and-forth between two Democratic trailblazers — Obama, seeking to be the nation’s first black president, and Ferraro, who in 1984 was the first woman on a major party presidential ticket — continued for a second day as they appeared on network and cable morning news programs.”

these aren’t Obama suporters.. this is Obama…

This is what she actually said…

“If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.”

Ferraro said she stands by her assertion that Obama’s success in the Democratic campaign is due “in part” to his race.

Obama, however, said that if someone in his campaign had suggested that Hillary Clinton “is where she is only because she is a woman” she would be offended.”

Notice that Geraldine Ferrao says “in part” and Obama responds with “only because”…”

Geraldine never said or implied that his success was due only to his race.. but that is how he is replying to the comment.

he is making this a racist issue.. not her.

“David Axelrod, his campaign manager, has chose to spin this as a racist comment… ”

She’s goes on to comment that this is one of his campaign strategies… it is not the first time he has done this…

and… it worked taking comments out of context with Bill Clinton… Bill backed off. I don’t think Geraldine will.

In fact, i think this is precisely why she left the Clinton campaign.. so she would have the freedom to defend herself against that sort of attack.

In this case, there is a great deal of difference between what was actually said and the innuendo that was implied…

I would say who is really making race an issue? .. but i don’t think it’s that exactly.

i think he is using the same political ploy that McCain used when caught with the lobbyists… misdirection inspiring indignation creating support for the underdog.

good campaign strategy if you realize that is all it is…

and if you don’t happen to be Geraldine Ferraro with your reputation slurred as a result of that strategy.

If these are the former police-type cars with the “Club” on the steering wheel then all I have to say to you Mr JT is RIGHT ON! There has to be five or six and I see them all over when walking my pooch.  I’ve thought about taking down the license plate numbers just to know how many of them are out there.Thank you for taking the time to report the owner as these cars are just a nuisance!  I’ll think of you, Mr JT everytime I see one orange-tagged.  :)
