Has anyone here actually gotten a $75 automatic traffic safety camera citation for using the low bridge during peak hours?

It occurred to me today that these might not really be issued since RCW 46.63.170 (https://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=46.63.170) seems to limit camera usage to school speed zones, red lights, and other speeds zones for certain cities.

And then the indemnification given to certain people associated with businesses in West Seattle would likely run afoul of the “equal protection under the law” portion of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. Not to mention, the Washington State Constitution’s own equal protection clause “No law shall be passed granting to any citizen, class of citizens, or corporation other than municipal, privileges or immunities which upon the same terms shall not equally belong to all citizens, or corporations.”

This isn’t really a focused question but more of an appeal for people’s general experiences, thoughts, and suggestions.

After 20 years of (more-or-less) of living on (or very close to) Capitol Hill, I (and my wife) will, at the end of May, be moving to West Seattle, quite near the Junction.

Stuff we like includes live music, beer, vegetarian food, bars where you can actually have a conversation, and good bookstores. And I’m interested in taking in some new experiences too- we’re aiming to get bikes as soon as we move (I always found biking around the Hill and Downtown too stressful) and look forward to biking to places like Alki and Lincoln Park.

To my dear West Seattleites and fellow Arbor Heights residents:

Please don’t allow your dogs to run loose. I was nearly attacked on a walk this evening by a large dog. The dog was in a fenceless yard, unattended and without a leash or a chain. She ran across the street to me and growled, barked, and showed her fangs as I pressed myself against a fence. She got less than two feet away from my bare legs. My mom and I screamed and yelled at the top of our lungs for someone to get their dog. Finally, a neighbor came outside after at least a minute. He said the dog belonged to his neighbor, whose yard she came from. The dog’s house and all of the neighboring houses had full driveways, yet no one else could be bothered to come out and help.

To the people who didn’t help: I sincerely hope you had fallen to the bystander effect instead of a lack of empathy.

To the owner: It’s incredibly irresponsible to allow your untrained dog to be left unattended outside when she has an instinct to protect her land by growling at and cornering passersby. I hope your dog doesn’t attack a person or one of the cats that roam the area. I also hope she doesn’t get hit by a car while she’s loose.

I agree, levy! No disrespect, arennemo but I suggest find a college student home for the summer who wants some space of their own & keeps Tuna in her own domain. When I finished Grad school and came home to live with my parents, this was totally my gig….. I house/pet/plant sat 20+ days every month until I could get my own place, I didn’t even care if people paid me! Maybe post on Nextdoor? Or some even more Hyperlocal channels? Good Luck!

When would be convenient for you for the city to maintain its roads? Often road work is scheduled to create the least disruption but there are times and project scopes where impact is unavoidable. In these cases mitigation happens but those options are often limited.

Many of the projects have complex scopes that require work beyond the surface and many of the projects that are primarily performed on the surface require extensive prep prior to the final pours of concrete or asphalt. By not performing those preparatory tasks and not pouring when conditions are good leads to repairs on that new work sooner.

Construction bids are made with certain assumptions and based on provided information. If there are issues discovered during that construction it’s possible that a reassessment of the engineering and associated costs may come into play, which is reasonable. Example may be poor soil conditions for soil compaction requiring additives or other solutions, utilities or other underground systems that were unknown due to age or 3rd party installations, etc. It would be very unreasonable to require a contractor to bid work and eat those unanticipated and unforeseen costs, especially on a low bid lump sum basis. That said, when contractors screw the pooch the may be subject to contractual penalties called “liquidated damages”. Often these are pecuniary in nature and are cumulative on a daily basis. In some contracts they are also substantial.

There is a labor shortage. Also, we have an entire generation that believes that physical labor is beneath them. I see it all the time in hiring and work performance. Much of this is due to HS counselors, for the last 20-25 years or so saying that the only options for students is college or the military. Vocational education has been cut, social pressure to get that degree, and no real understanding of the value of the trades and now those chickens are coming home to roost (which is great for my pay). It has also led to a glut in college graduates which has driven down the value of that degree in the job market. This creates a wicked double whammy effect (technical term) of broke young-uns complaining that good paying jobs just don’t exist even though they are literally everywhere if you’re willing to get dirty and, of course, start at the bottom.

So, in short, too much work, too few workers, a shortage in raw materials, and, perhaps, poor planning, leads to this lag in completion which is inconvenient for you. Oh, and that if we don’t repair roads when there are first issues then it leads to larger issues and more expensive and time consuming repairs.
