I knew that remark wouldn’t make me terribly popular… but yeah-me’s reaction is the reason i mentioned this issue.

This idea so many have that they not only have rights but it’s everyone else’s responsibility to make those rights work for them gets old really fast.

I too have been bitten more than once..

generally breaking up fights with unleashed dogs who approach my leashed dogs…

and have yet to do a course of rabies shots.

The fact that the woman was walking her dog on leash at all makes your odds pretty high that the dog is current on it’s shots…

but i would make sure your tetanus is current.

Thank you Steve for calling out the dog walker who encroached onto the handicapped parking space at the north lot. There were plenty of spaces available (a rare site) so there is no excuse for parking a second car south of the handicapped space.

Rant to the person for saying there was ‘enough room’ for someone to get out of a van in a wheelchair. There is barely enough room for one vehicle south of the handicapped spot. Shame on you!

i didn’t mean to be condescending, que; nor did i assume that you’re stupid. i was just trying to get the point across – and with some difficulty, it seemed – that the kindle is not really intended for web surfing. for another thing, the screen is black and white.

edit: maybe these excerpts from the user’s guide will be more helpful:

These little guys have been fascinating. Today I had to cut one of the lower support “wires” to a large web as it was blocking the path into my garden. I snipped it with my pruning shears and watched as the spider sprung into action. The web sort of collapsed in but the spider just remained in the center, gathering up all of the silk until it formed a ball. Then it climbed up one of the wires above and started spinning its way down again. I checked on it a few hours later and it looked as though the web was partially re-built and stable again. What a remarkable process.

of course they are going to pick studies that prove their point.. but that doesn’t mean that those studies are the exception to the rule.

in those hundreds of studies on alcohol use that you found .. can you point to any studies that actually refuted the basic results in the studies that site linked to?

it is easy to dismiss evidence because it comes from a “biased” site or because it is “too old” or because …

but if you are making an argument it is a lot stronger argument if you refute the evidence with other evidence.

I suspect you will find a pretty hard time finding a reliable study .. one not funded by the liquor industry.. that proves increased access to alcohol doesn’t have some pretty significant problems associated with it.

And that’s the point.

Why would we choose to increase the the costs of alcohol associated problems while decreasing the revenue for social programs including education?

i am not checking many alcohol labels these days…

unless you count non-alcoholic beer.. which does still have a small amount of alcohol in it :(

i don’t think the binge drinking problem is limited to college kids ..

but if if it was…

you might care a little if one of them drinks and drives and kills someone you love.

or if your child turns out to be one of those routine cases of alcohol poisoning.

Even without that.. you might balk at paying the long term health consequences of the kinds of alcoholism that could have been easily prevented.

by the time we compile the statistics from making alcohol more available it is already too late to reverse the damage.

Please define “beverage” in this context. A shot? A pint? Of what?

I mean, I did see someone pound a fifth of Jack Daniel’s once, but that’s not exactly a common occurrence. (Admittedly I only have my own observations to go on, here, and I’m not trying to cite anecdotes as evidence, but I hang out with some pretty heavy drinkers and I still can’t say that I see people substituting, say, a pint of whiskey one to one for a pint of beer.)

Of course it doesn’t. But when I did a search on PubMED on this topic (which anyone can do, it’s a freely accessible index), I came up with HUNDREDS of studies on alcohol consumption. That site points to, what, ten? You’ll forgive my operating assumption that they’ll pick the ones that tend to support their point. (Although, let me reiterate that I’m not disagreeing with it. What I’m disagreeing with is the assertion that privatizing sales necessarily leads to a greater concentration of liquor outlets. Personally I’m hoping it leads to greater selection, but that’s not the same thing.)

I do expect, based on other studies I’ve seen (this one, for example) that if liquor sales are privatized, sales will go up. Going by that study, the mere fact of the retailer being a private seller can be a contributing factor. But I don’t see how that’s inherently bad, and if it’s taxed, that’s another revenue stream.

i am not demonizing alcohol.

I am simply asking why anyone thinks making alcohol more available is a good idea?

I am guessing that any adult who wants to consume has no real difficulty accessing alcohol now.

they may wish it was cheaper which they hope these measures will accomplish…

they may wish they had access to a wider variety of choices as they hope these measures will accomplish…

they may wish it was more convenient to buy hard alcohol… which they hope these measures will accomplish.

But our current system does not prevent any adult from buying hard alcohol and it provides income for the kinds of social services that most of us are unwilling to raise regular taxes to provide.

so why do we need to change the law when increasing accessibility increases public cost and public risk?

I don’t have to demonize alcohol to make a case for the pure economics of defeating both these measures.

but when the alcoholic content of a beverage rises.. the level of intoxication inevitably follows.

According to DPs stats.. which i didn’t check.. you have to drink 6 Mickey’s…. the Cadillac of alcohol delivery for cheap beer … to equal the alcoholic content of one shot of stoly.

As for that illusive store that stocks a wide range of rich irish whiskeys.. that is completely possible now within the current licensing system.

so why do we NEED to change a system that is working for us and is delivering income to our state’s social programs?

but beyond the humor.. this idea intrigues me. a rally or meet up or get together designed to foster feeling good about being part of a community that talks to one another.. instead of fights.

For me.. this sense of community and ability for a broad range of people to discuss ideas has been the forum’s largest draw.

There is a rally to restore sanity Seattle event happening at Westlake that has already secured 2000+ participants… and i could attend that.

but i long for something local…

I want to like this device. I guess I don’t because I’m not the “person on the go” that it sounds like it caters to. The idea of making your car a hotspot (or anywhere you are a hotspot) is a great idea but I’m not that person. I like to surf at home (or work, shhh) and the $145 price for the device…

I really wish they would make a device that would plug into your tv that feeds off your wireless router, you switch to your input channel and viola! you can choose from millions of online video sites. I can do that now when I plug my computer into my tv but it’s hard to read text on the tv and difficult to navigate the web that way.

I’m not talking about the ROKU box because I find it limited in offerings and I’m not talking about a PS3 or xbox because I don’t play games. Is there anything like that out there? I’d pay $145 for that.

There’s always much ranting and raving about Comcast on here. I recently read an article in the NYTimes about Virgin’s new mobile modem. Costs $150 up front and then $40/month with no contract. You can take it with you and it provides a bubble of internet connectivity (excuse my lack of proper terminology) for any device…touch, laptop, desktop etc. Coverage includes West Seattle and looks like all of Seattle from the map. Unfortunately it’s sold out right now, no doubt from the NYT rave.

Couple links for you check it out for yourself. And if anyone has experience with it, love to hear about it. I’m pretty ready to buy, as soon as they’re back in stock. But I’d also like hear others impressions of the technology, those who have the technological expertise I lack. Do you think it’s really as good (fast! reliable!) as it sounds???
