No, unfortunately there is no class directory at Roxhill Elementary. It is heartbreaking that our daughter had to forgo a birthday party just because no one even bothered to RSVP. What more could I have done, I went to the school and handed out in person the invites, I went again to deliver cupcakes and both times I told the kids that if they wanted to come to the party we need to receive a call from an adult so we know how much food, etc… to bring.

I guess I an old fashion but I was always brought up to call or tell someone in person if I planned or not to go to a party.

As my husband told me it was not my place to contact people even if we had an email address or phone number, that would be tacky. If for some reason not everyone had transporation we would have helped them out.

We still would like to throw a party for our daughter but how do we when people don’t RSVP????

Marco – I know which protest you are referring to since you were kind enough to send a photo. West Seattle Neighbors for Peace and Justice actually do that every single Sunday at noon – and have been doing so for years. They call it a “vigil” rather than a “protest.”

flipjack…I wasn’t saying that you didn’t vote…I read what you said, and I concur. It’s the voting that allows us to bitch. :) If I didn’t take the time to go out and vote and at least have my say, then I should keep my mouth shut if I don’t like the results…that’s what I was saying.So…as cynical as we may be, we vote, and that allows us to grouse as much as we want :)

Election fraud is the correct term rather than voter fraud. Voter fraud is mostly a myth of the republicans who are intent on reducing turnout and disenfranchising voters of historically Democratic voting blocks. Note in this state the only recent cases of voter fraud uncovered in 2004 were all Republicans voting for Rossi.

Election fraud is much more difficult to detect and the safeguards run counter to the business model currently in use. The more speedy and efficient the process, the more vulnerable it is to single point failures and manipulation.

However you are in luck in King county. You can monitor the thing yourself. If you are a party member, you can even get paid to do so. Contact your district chair and tell them you wish to be an official observer for the next election. There are several people who are regulars in this function but often several slots open up.

Also any citizen with a pulse and a drivers license can sign in as an observer at most if not all of the venues where the ballots are received, stored, counted and tabulated.

I have done such duty myself. I also happen to know that while they probably will not comment on this thread, about 2/3rds of those who are long term employees of the King County elections offices, seem to live in West Seattle…. and are hardworking, honest people who would blow the whistle if anything obvious or underhanded was done within their sight or hearing.

The nature of the combination of Windows, Access database, and secrecy by the vendor Diebold of the underlying code and scripts, continue to fuel the suspicions of anyone who understands the nature of computers and the proven vulnerabilities of the various components used in the “black box” part of the tabulating software.

Open source code and transparency is the only viable fix as I see it but that is probably a long ways off here in the heart of Microsoft and the place where millions of people use computers without understanding either how they work or how they can be compromised without any indication to the user.

The shift to vote by mail will actually remove one of the potential failure points in the chain of custody of pre tabulated votes. The memory cards. The majority of the vulnerabilities discovered by computer scientist given access to various voting machines, could most easily be compromised via code introduced into memory cards.

That’s enough for tonight. If anyone wants a long rundown of the king county elections processes circa 2004-2006, let me know and I will pull out my notes and the boxes of records and reports I had to sign off on.

JAN, That’s right I DO vote. And yes as acemotel says, it should be in the forefront. OK, I tend to be cynical but what’s wrong with that. A little cynicism is good as long as it’s not just a bunch of negativity.

If we had more critical thinkers in this country, we might not be in the mess we’re in now. But who knows maybe we’re not in a mess and the whole thing will work out fine and Kucinich will end up winning the the presidency.

O’Neill Plumbers on California.

We’ve used them 3 times (side sewer replacement, minor basement repairs) and they’ve been awesome.

When we bought our house in 1995 there was an old flyer of some kind from the 1960’s stapled to a basement joist from O’Neill’s. They’ve been in business a long time with good customer service.

Sorry Bonnie our experience with A Better Roofing was awful. Poor service, terrible crew (fell through our ceiling for one, used our backyard to pee) and the nails in one section came through the drywall. The supervisor on the job couldn’t have cared less when we mentioned the above.

Never again with A Better Roofing for us.

Just wanted to remind people utilizing West Seattle pools for lap swim purposes to swim with people that are your speed. Just because the easy/medium/fast lanes might be more crowded doesn’t mean you should swim in the very fast lane if there are fewer people in it. If everyone swam with people their own speed, we would all get in a good workout. Remember, if you’re being passed frequently, it’s time to move into a slower lane. And if you keep passing people, move to a faster lane. Very simple and logical…just like those lap swim pool rules state (which everyone should read). Thanks!

I remember that when our daughter was in preschool both at West Seattle Preschool at the YMCA and than at Little Pilgrims she had several playdates with many of her classmates but since she is in elementary school and most of the parents work and the school has a policy of not giving out personal information such as addresses or phone number how is it playdates are handled nowadays???

We were going to throw our daughter a birthday party, I handed out the invites and brought in some cupcakes and I explained to the kids they needed to let their parents or an adult at their house know and call us one way or the other if they were coming tot he party. Not one person called and so we had to cancel the party. Why is it that people don’t RSVP nowadays? Is this another rule I have missed?

I would like to know how does someone obtain donations from area business for our school? We area at Roxhill and we desperately need sound equipment, musical instruments, a piano would be great! Also bookcases for our teachers. I hear another area school received a donation of a baby grand piano for their school so how do we do something like that for our school?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

I don’t think it matters if they are tallying the votes up the same way, with a computer running windows software, from what I’ve read it’s pretty easy to change the votes.

I suppose I would feel more certain that my ballot made it into the computer if I voted in person, but I usually vote by mail.

However if you leave early enough, neither bridge is a problem.

The rule of thumb for the Delridge ramp is, reach it by 6:45 or add a half hour to the trip time. Reach it by 7:30 or add a possible hour.

But Pioneer Square is just about the easiest and most efficient bus commute in town if the “Children” will stay out of the bus lane on the bridge….

If you must drive, and you don’t get up early, and you cannot be intimidated by teamsters driving overweight trucks on bad pavement, then the local secret route is…

Lower bridge to East Marginal way. Take a left unless the trucks are lined up in the turn lane, if lined up, go straight through on the right lane, take the first left turnaround and get back to East Marginal turn right toward the docks. go to the next light, take a right avoiding the overweight truck created sinkhole/puddle onto Hanford. Go to the light at 1st, turn left, and proceed to Pioneer Square. There are several paths through between East Marginal/Alaskan way to first ave and due to the train traffic, one should become familiar with the various alternatives.

However be aware. The Spokane street viaduct is designed to bypass the variables you are gambling with once you commit to the lower bridge.

Trains, drawbridges and even backups in either the loading or unloading at several of the terminals can suddenly bugger all plans and schedules. I have been stuck on the lower bridge for over and hour once when the terminal 7 line spilled out onto the bridge and halted all traffic. Every traffic enforcement entity denied responsibility for the problem and an off duty game warden stuck next to me finally turned on his light, drove up the wrong lane and forced the teamsters to clear the bridge.

Where are these motorcycle cops when my bus is held up from getting into the bus lane? I’ve never seen anyone try and clear the way for the bus to go through.

I live on Fauntleroy, but if I need to go to the viaduct, I get on a Delridge. That way I don’t have to do that crossover. I take Avalon to Genessee to Delridge and get on there. You’re already in the lane for 99 and no changing required. Delridge can be backed up sometimes, but I’d rather wait there to get on than do that dance of trying to get right while they all try to get left.

Aim, according to Walgreen’s website there is a 24 hr. pharmacy and drugstore in Burien: 14656 Ambaum Blvd SW, Store: (206) 901-1816, Pharmacy: (206) 901-1816. I’d call and confirm that though – I’ve never been there so can’t say for sure.

I hope you are feeling better now. I have often wondered where the nearest ER is, and assumed it was Highline, but it might be helpful if I would look at a map and find out how to get there! Kinda funny that I know where the 24 hr. pet ER is, but not the one for me! Even if Highline wasn’t closest, I think I’d feel more comfortable not having to drive over the WS bridge to get there, in case there were backups headed downtown. I could probably get downtown faster if it was all clear, but if not, it could be a mess.

Jan, I forgot we had talked once about that WS Gimpy Coffee Klatch. :) Let me know if you plan something. Unfortunately I’ve got plans on 1/18 and can’t make the Capers event. But we still need another date for pie. I was so disappointed last week to go over to Shoofly last week and find out they were closed on vacation until the 15th!
