OMIGOD We’re too old—old as dirt — we’ll send our kids and dogs :-) Or you can just ignore us if we happen to be in the same place…I am KIDDING!

OTOH that may be why people talk to us; we seem like unthreatening geezers? If I were “people” I’d certainly talk with NewRes or Erik before I talked to me.

I’ve always had friends of all ages — same thing here, though many are my friends from far away— we sort of wound up here. My last birthday party (and no I’m not telling you which it was) had guests from 14 – 96. And they all talked to each other.

I do have to say there is more age “segregation” in Seattle than in other places I’ve been and less race and class segregation. I was kind of surprised when we organized a “geezers” brunch when WSB socializing first began and only geezers came.

    Saturday, the 14th at BPP.

Maybe we should start a seprate thread for it?

    What time?

I think that the reason this thread got a little out of hand is, Admiral Pub was a HUGE sponsor in our last fund raiser.

So, coming right on the heels of that fund raiser, it was easy for a lot of the members to be defensive about it.

They did, after all, donate about $200.00 to a local business that fell on hard times.

They are still a favorite of mine!!!!!

You get crazies everywhere, in every bar. You, dazzelspace, had a bad experience and should follow through with that individual. That is what law enforcement and insurance is for.

    I wish you luck!

Maybe their thinking is, if they bring in an NBA team, it will generate more money for the city.

*It says to be brief and descriptive in the title. One out of 2 ain’t bad.

So I was over on King5 reading about how gas prices has gotten people taking mass transit all over the country. It details city by city how they’re dealing with the surge in ridership.

I get to Tulsa and it says ‘demand is at record levels, but there is no money for more buses. “The city of Tulsa just has a lot of needs,” she said. “We compete with police and fire in the general fund.”‘(hope it was ok to copy and paste from the article, WSB)

And I thought, sheesh, if Tulsa can’t afford to expand Mass Transit, how can Oklahoma City afford to build the Sonics a new arena? Maybe OK City is richer?

I did a little research and found out that Tulsa is #1 richest city in Oklahoma and OK City is #2. (http://wealth.mongabay.com/cities/OKLAHOMA.html)

According to another table (http://dcjobsource.com/richest.html), Tulsa and OK City are 17th and 18th POOREST American cities. Of course, that doesn’t mean squat–many other cities on that Poorest list have NBA teams.

What’s more important: A professional home basketball team or mass transit?

Because I’m slow, next Saturday does not mean the one coming up, right? And of course it depends if my puppy sitter is available :)

That’s cool about Shadowland (I think I should give it another try).

Next Saturday at BPP works great for me. I say early too. Maybe around 3 or 4?

    Anyone else? JT?

next Saturday should work, I think, for us. where should we go? I think someplace where we can actually all talk and interact would be great. BPP would be great for that, and they have always been so welcoming to the WSB-ers. if we get there early, we can secure some seats, even.

    oh yeah- 34.

oh yeah, and while we’re on the topic- this thread got me all thirsty for happy hour, so I stopped at Shadowland on the way home and had a beer. it was nice, and quiet, and I read the paper. I didn’t speak to anyone but the bartender and hid in the corner, but it’s a nice place to sit by yourself, anyway.

New Res: I found this video very informative. Do you really not have sound? If not, I can understand why you would not find the link very helpful.

The video shows clips from every network which use the exact same language over and over, obviously using White House talking points, to describe their “puzzlement, disappointment” etc that a loyal nice guy like Scott McClelland could write such a book. This method is exactly what McClelland described as how the Bush Administration obfuscated the run up to war wit Iraq and the Valerie Plame outing. Interestingly, no one in the White House is disputing any of the facts of the book (yes, facts, I know, have a liberal bias), they’re pretty much just attempting to shoot the messenger.

The Daily Show and Colbert Report links were just for fun and to reiterate what the above video was illustrating.

It makes me incredibly sad for my country to find us constantly reminded of how little respect the Bush administration has for anyone who was not a true Republican believer. Bush said his base were the “haves and have mores”, and he governed to keep that base happy with tax cuts and a war for oil. McClelland say’s he’s written this book as a wake up call to get things to go differently in Washington. I hope we heed his warning.

Jiggers – I’m pretty white, being German/Swedish. Don’t let the name fool you.

Out of curiosity, what are everyone’s ages? I’m turning 30 in a couple months.

This weekend is bad for me (Navy Reserve), and I work the swing shift (330-1030pm) on weekdays.

And what day works best for everyone?

Next week works best for me, pretty much any night of the week. Next weekend is the Brewers’ festival and the Georgetown music festival, so I’ll be hanging out in other ‘hoods. :)

BDG – I really, really was not referring to you!! I promise. I understand that you have been busy. Please don’t think that was aimed at you in any way!

Maybe next week (during week) or next weekend would work best for everyone?

This isn’t worth debating Vincent. It’s against the law. Sure, I would love to simply handle the situation myself and torch the damn thing, but then I’m in the wrong. I also notated in my original post that I haven’t been vigilant on calling after 72 hours, I’ve waited as long as 10 days.

I’d honestly have to say that this is a nonpartisan issue!

Jiggers – That is exactly what I have experienced. The whole, “Here’s my number, but don’t call anytime soon” thing.

Of course, I have met some REALLY great new friends just recently that I have found to be refreshingly genuine.

But, I’m white (completely) so I don’t necessarily think it is a “race” issue. I think it may just be (especially here in WS) such a tight knit community, that people are either not used to meeting new people, or uncomfortable with it.

Elgrego, I sympathize with you and you may have a strong ethnic background(seeing your screename) like I do that’s not all white. I’ve been living here for 12 years for who knows why and know that it’s very hard to make friends out here, especially if you have darker skin than the average normal white guy. I have no exceptional real friends here like back home, but only know aquaintences. Seattleites are a weird group of people who like to say we are “nice” but its like this “I’ll give you my number, but please don’t call me anytime soon to have coffee” Its a cold shoulder, but you’ll get used to to it. More ethnic folks have a harder time mixing in because that’s the way it is out here with the whitie’s. I frankly couldn’t give a crap, but I’ve never needed to put on a second face to be accepted into a social group. Remember, life’s to short to worry about people if they like you or hate you. I have other things to worry about than if you like me or not. Just be yourself and go with the flow. And don’t sugarcoat the way you feel or things they you want to say, or listen to how others want you to think out here, its all BS. You have your own mind and thoughts. Be yourself.

JT – That was very sweet! However, I WISH that was the problem! Lol.

JenV – Any day, pretty much, works for me. I would just need a little advanced notice. I could do weekend or weekday.

And, how about no politics discussed? Or, would that not be any fun?

dazzelspace- did you report this to your insurance co? If you are able to get his plate #, they can run it and go after him for the damages to your vehicle even if you don’t have full coverage. just a thought, that has nothing to do with drunks, bars, anything like that- at least he would be held financially responsible for his actions, since it’s too late to do anything legally to him. if he’s a regular, it wouldn’t be too hard to find his plate # if you weren’t able to get it at the scene.

One thing I saw a couple a months ago and was hoping would be continued: Saturday morning kids movies. I would love to see some of the old standards (Mary Poppins, etc) that I could share with my kids.

that is definitly a problem that the guy is there everyday @ 11 so this was problem a more then once occurance. I do know that occasionally especially in a hit and run that if you call 911 and even give a partial vehicle description and partial license plate tehy will do what they can to track down the vehicle. it is really unfortunate to hear about people like that that have such a big drinkign problem. And i always just walk to alki (its a long walk but would rather be safe than sorry)but am selfishly more worried about myself being hit by a drunk driver leaving beacuse they are worried about being towed/ticketed then anything else. I am sorry that the guy hit your car like that.

And yeah – I saw the guy – clearly drunk – get into his truck, smash into my car – and speed off burning rubber… so YES he was loaded. Then they told me he was there every day at 11AM!

You don’t understand the issue at the Admiral – though I thank you for being polite. They KNEW they were wrong. In this situation, I am not going to get into a big thing with this drunk and his friends and his bar. How does that benefit me… ? This guy could have come back with a weapon and threatened me… how do I know? He’s drunk!

The issue along Alki is simple – the ‘hood doesn’t want nor like the nightlife – and parking down there is atrocious… so I doubt you will ever see this embraced by the City or the neighbors.

One thing you can do is park on side streets and walk – but that could be a ways. Maybe take the bus down there or a Taxi… thats what I would do (and have done) to go down to Alki in the summertime.

Also, briefly, for any normal person who reads this thread – start at the top – read the first 4 or 5 responses to my post – I got jumped all over for no reason and I reacted in a very predictable manner – defending myself and returning the insults that were directed at me. So, list manager who threatens me…. this is comical. This is called a ‘rant’ thing… since when are rants supposed to be judged like I was? You and your pals can now flame away… but I’m not going to read any of it…
