Oh, datamuse… I relate, except that’s similar to what happened with me and coffee. I was around it so much working as a barista that I always smelled like coffee and steamed milk. No, it’s not a good thing after a while. Plus, I worked the opening shift frequently, so I lived off espresso until 1 pm or so; now I can only have the tiniest amount of coffee without feeling sick.
I have nothing to contribute to the donut conversation; never been much of a fan. *duck and run*
I know exactly why I don’t like donuts: I worked the Sunday morning shift at a bakery in high school. There were two churches within a few blocks of the bakery, and my shift covered just after morning services for both of them. Lines out the door for over an hour, full of people wanting donuts. Too much of a good thing.
I think DonaQueen has mediocre donuts at best. I used to love Top Pot, but that was years ago before they ended up in Starbucks. Honestly, I love the munchkins at Dunkin Donuts, but that’s probably b/c you can’t get them west of the Mississippi so they’re a treat. Krispy Kreme makes a great chocolate cake donut. And I dig Safeway donuts over QFC, especially the chocolate frosted with sprinkles. Light and airy, but best fresh out of the oven of course. I’m going to check out Voodoo Donuts in Portland next time I’m there b/c I hear they’re great, but I’ll have to judge for myself.
Hello Jiggers,
I have a suggestion, can you please may be consider doing a review for us about Cafe Revo on this blog?
You seem extremely qualified. I guess I have to agree with the notion that during this times it might be difficult to find someone from the “usual sources” to do that. Please give it a thought. It’s just an idea. I also don’t know if there are any rules or policies on this blog against that.
Thank you in advance, Josh.
And after all, even if it’s just a symbolic jesture it’s a start. If it gets one more person to pay attention and decide to recycle more it will be a success in my opinion.
This place has amazing donuts. It is a little hard to get into on the weekends, because the place is packed. Everything in the case is fresh, but you can also ask what is fresh in the back. If you have never had a hot apple fritter, you’re missing a true joy in life.
AS far as top pot goes, I think they are just over priced, plain ol donuts. Lets be honest here, there is only so high you can take the common donut. You can take it in a different direction, like Mighty O has done with their vegan creations, but at the end of the day, it is still just a donut.
Just to address a previous topic on ameture vs pro food reviews, I have some knowledge on this topic. I am a fat guy, that before opening an ice cream shop, was a carpenter, and a proffesional fisherman, I know my donuts. I have had Krispy Kreme’s Safeway, 7-11, Duncan(I wish one was local), and almost every little shop in the area. Southern California, has a much better selection of mom and pop donutarias than the North West, but there are a few here that can measure up. That little shop in white center makes a mean donut. DO not get there at 3 in the afternoon, and expect a great donut. These things have a really short shelf life, and if you can not get your lazy ass out of bed before noon, maybe you should stick to bagels. Good luck finding a decent one of those in the area though.
I have not tried it, but I have heard they make this amazing chicken and rice soup, buit only on weekends. Maybe that will be my next White Center Now write up.
I agree about the fencing, Dale.
The use of the hole? Well, imaginatively…line it with concrete, with water-in, and water-out plumbing, add a diving board, some landscaping and a plexiglass dome..maybe some heat for the H2O…call it West Seattle Municipal Pool ;-) ..charge 2 bucks for an afternoon of swimming…you have to bring your own towel – lol….
Guidelines published on the Association of Food Journalists site (a group I’d never heard of before pulling a G-search just now) suggest waiting a month. See the full guidelines here:

Was the “being disbanded” entity the Community Police Team, perhaps? It was just the subject of a presentation at the Crime Prevention Council but nothing about disbanding – they are one person short at the moment because of an illness or disability, though.
I would kill for a Top Pot here in Westside. I know you can get them at some Starbucks, but I’m a sucker for the Bavarian Cream, which I never see.
My question – where is the best doughnut in West Seattle? Or even a mediocre doughnut? Okay, not safeway or 7-11. Muffins and cupcakes need not apply.
Julie, thank-you for clearing that up. I assumed. Very sorry. And I totally agree, there is some crazy out there. I think it said someone went after a camera with an axe as well. He may have bigger problems than a ticket.
Yes, we spoke with the cops today. They will come out to take a formal report tomorrow. They also mentioned something about their “community task force” or some similar name being disbanded. They said normally, that would be the department which would handle such a report/complaint. It sounded like a budget cut thing.
I just want to rant about the little SOB who felt the need to tag our fence, ADT sign and recycle bins with the number 8 (gang symbol?) sometime in the last week. In addition, our neighbor observed a light-colored minivan parked in the alley behind our house early Friday morning. As he approached, someone quickly jumped in the back and they took off. License plate was 784-XRW. Perhaps unrelated but becoming too frequent none-the-less. Be on the lookout in hopes no one else has to rant about the same people doing the same to them. We live on 42nd SW in the Admiral/Belvedere area. Also, we want to RAVE about our neighbors, without them keeping an eye out, we would not have known. A good case for neighborhood watch indeed!
Thank you for bringing this here and alerting everyone.
Have you reported the van and license number to authorities?
Keep us posted please!
Just to put our neighbors on alert, we live on 42nd SW in the Admiral/Belvedere area near the Charleston Cafe. Over the past months we’ve seen a rise in graffiti in our area. We have an alley behind the house. Someone very recently sprayed our fence, ADT sign and recycle bin with the # 8 or maybe a B – we suspect this may be a gang tag. Does anyone know? Our neighbor also observed a light-colored minivan parked in the alley behind our house early Friday morning. As he approached, someone quickly jumped in the back and they took off. License plate was 784-XRW. The two events may be unrelated, but it’s too close for comfort. We will be taking measures to beef up our security. Notifying the community is the first step!

My son is a big donut fan…even loves Safeway donuts. I’m wondering if anyone has tried Golden House Bakery and Donuts?
Okay, so who doesn’t love Pegasus Pizza? It’s by far one of the busiest pizza restaurants in the area because it rocks.
My beef is with its new diggs. We’ve been going all winter long and it’s always freezing in there. I’m sure the wind that whips in from the door constantly being open doesn’t help things, but come to find out, they have no heat. They haven’t had heat all winter (this is all according to our server tonight). We’ve noticed the space heaters here and there, but apparently, after a long winter of use, they’re all breaking. Brr….
Luckily, the pizza is fantastic and I’ll keep going back. I’m just hoping they will get some heat next fall/winter.
Any idea who at the City or what department at the City I need to contact to see if better barricades can be put up around the construction site at Fauntleroy & Alaska.
That hole is protected by a cyclone fence on the south side, west side and majority of the east side. Since these are busy streets I am afraid an error in judgement could prove to be fatal. The drop appears to be 40′ or so.
For instance, EXAMPLE #1 Coming down the alley-way out of Jiffy Lube, eastbound-if one failed to negotiate the turn properly(think elderly driver, snowy roads, stuck gas pedal, mechanical break-down, brake failure) over the cliff you go!
EXAMPLE #2-Veh #1 Northbound on Fauntleroy-entering intersection with Alaska when Veh #2, westbound on Alaksa run’s a red light striking VEH #1 on passenger side sending both vehicle careening NORTHWEST into the abyss.
Any other scenarios?
Any ideas when/if the site will be completed?–2013?
Instead of a Grocery Store what else could/should go here?

JT, I didn’t mean to imply that only people who want to break the law were upset: the outraged people I was referring to were specifically those mentioned early in the article:
“But drivers caught by the unforgiving enforcement — which mainly snared those who didn’t come to a full stop before turning right on red — exploded in anger.”
In fact, later in the article, it mentions an Arizona engineer who has never received a ticket from these cameras who nevertheless objects to them.
(alki2008, here’s my data point for your Venn diagram: I would like better enforcement for leash and scoop laws, in addition to improved traffic law enforcement. And how about if we add second-hand smoke laws in, too? I’d be curious to see your diagram. I don’t volunteer to go back through past posts to cross-correlate to help you generate it, though!)
It would be interesting to see a Venn diagram of posters thoughts about (1) speed limits, (2) leash laws, and (3) scoop laws. I’d hope that anyone chastising others that think some speed limits in the area are set too low for reasonableness would also keep their dogs on legal-sized leashes whenever their dogs are outside of an off-leash area and pick up all waste from their dogs.
On the original topic…it seems like the main point of the OP was how much of the fines were going to a private company, rather than the community itself.
Personally, I support red light cameras because there is never a time when going through a red light is ‘safe’ and drivers wouldn’t ‘react’ to red light cameras in a way that endagers other drivers. However, I’m against speeding cameras because drivers tend to brake suddenly in the vicinity of cameras…which can contribute to accidents. And it’s not just the speeders that slam on their brakes. I’ve seen plenty of people slam on their brakes when they see one of those speeding trap cars, even though they’re already driving the speed limit and don’t need to slow down to avoid a ticket.
For the record, I am not related to the owners and do not know them. I’m just a West Seattle resident that enjoyed a darn good meal at a great addition to the neighborhood. I will say this, though. My family used to own a restaraunt. It’s hard work and a labor of love. I find that most owners put their blood, sweat and tears into it to fulfill a dream. So, if you had one disappointing meal, so what? Is it really worth trampling on someone else’s dreams. Give ’em a chance, I’m betting that this is a place that survives in a tough industry.
Did anyone read the article?
1) 14 year study shows “governments use traffic tickets as a means of generating revenue”, (not safety, as claimed).
2) For those that don’t mind an added tax without benefit of vote, the complaint is the huge amount of money that goes to a third party each month in fees, as opposed to said government. Up to $5000 a month per camera.
3) The amount of side impact crashes reduced, is practically offset by the amount of rear impact crashes created.
4) Some people don’t care for the simple act of being filmed and watched at every moment. These cameras are going up by the hundreds.
5) If this were about safety, not revenue, address the causes of most accidents. According to the NHTSA’s own data, 2% of all traffic accidents are related to running a red light. What are we doing about the causes of 98% of traffic accidents?
I’m personally undecided. Some of these facts make me question the idea. Last I checked, it’s not a crime, yet, to look at all sides. To presume the only people upset are those that want the right to break the law, is kind of rude IMO.
I’d like to interject here because I used to work at 5 star restaurant (in a high end hotel) for 8 years and have over 12 years of restaurant experience. I have been trained by the best in the business(not in Seattle) in how to run and manage the floor and staff. I have been out of the industry for awhile now but have also worked here in Seattle at a few notable places. When I first moved to Seattle over 13 years ago, the restaurant service sucked beyond everywhere. It has got much better–but still lacks common sense floor service. I almost can’t go anywhere nowdays but notice little things that the service staff does or doesn’t do right. But hey.. it isn’t my restaurant so what do I care. I will tip accordingly and am a stricter tipper because I have been there and done that. The saying is that “you are only as good as you were the night before” which is true because most full service restaraunt businesses don’t last more than two years if that. I can sit and observe a restaurant and find a dozen things in a night that I guarantee that would need to be worked on. Owners of restaurants are hard headed and don’t like to be told what to do and how to help improve their business. If I was an owner, I would be more objective to ideas from guests and staff because it is a team effort to be the best that you can be. Last thing I would want is a guest to come in and have a bad experience and when he sees ten of his friends by the pool the next day and say “hey forget Jiggers place let’s go somewhere else it sucks over their” those are ten people who’ll hate my place that hasn’t even stepped inside. My goal would be to make sure that everyone who comes in leaves happy happy happy so they tell their family and friends. Word of mouth advertising is contagious. I can go on and on about this topic. I’m sure an owner would like to hear responses from its guests so it can better itself.
A professional is paid and a amateur doesn’t that’s all. There are consulting groups that are experts in this field. Everything from staff training, cost control to design..
