Teen pregnancy is down I’m told, but it’s still one of the leading determinants in whether a pregnancy will be funded by Medicaid. I have an anecdote about teen pregnancy. It’s a PERSONAL anecdote mind, so of course your mileage will vary.

My daughter had a difficult adolescence. I mean, adolescence is never a joy ride anyway, right? But in this case, it was like the guy running the roller coaster had a heart attack and slumped over on the throttle.

Now there were several reasons for this being an even-harder-than-normal adolescence. First was the fact that we were living in The Projects, living off Welfare, and that put a severe dent in the kid’s respect for me as an authority figure. I’m not saying that it always happens that way; it really depends on the circumstances. But believe me, when your kid sees that you can work, but you still choose NOT to work, it matters.

Second, gangs were rife at that time: in the school, on the playground, in the ‘hood. Many of my daughter’s friends were getting sucked into these gangs, and she wanted to get into one, too, so she could act all tough and grown up.

Third, there were some psychological problems on top of the usual adolescent thing, and those problems made everything twice as bad.

Finally, I was just a sucky parent, with lots of psychological problems of my own. :-)

    ***********************

So how’s this relate to teen pregnancy? I’ll tell you . . .

One day, my darling little 12-year-old girl came home and announced to my wife and I that she had a boyfriend.

    Oh . . . and by the way he’s 19 years old.

    And in a gang.

    Ooooops!!!

–We knew what had to be done. And we knew that it was not going to be pleasant. But what was the alternative? We did not want to see our daughter get knocked up and have her young life ruined, as had happened with so many of her friends.

¶ First, we put her on restriction. No more late nights out for starters, and we insisted on knowing where she was and whom she was with at all times. We weeded out several of her friends right off the bat, and demanded to meet with the parents of the ones that were left. We reached an understanding with these parents whereby we would watch out for their daughters and they would watch out for ours.

¶ Next, we moved out of The Projects and changed schools, specifically to get our daughter away from this bad environment that we had put her in.

¶ Finally, we had regular heart-to-hearts with the kid, explaining to her in crystal clear terms that if she disobeyed us – and if a baby was the result of that disobedience – her youth would be over and the future would be bleak. “You, not we, will be changing diapers and getting up at 2 in the morning for feedings,” we told her. And we meant it.

Needless to say, our daughter didn’t care for any of this, and she made our lives hell for the next 6 years and beyond to prove it. It was an incredibly hard ride for all of us, but I’ve never second-guessed the decision to get tough because again, what was the alternative? Lousy father that I was, I was still this girl’s father. Steering her in the right direction was my job.

This is something that many parents still don’t seem to get. I want to shake some of them and say: You’re the parent; you’re allowed to call the shots.

Yes, as crazy as it sounds to us freedom-loving Seattle-ites, as a parent, you are ALLOWED to say:

I wanna know who you’re with.

    Curfew is at 9:00.

While you’re living here, you’ll follow my rules. And that includes no sex.

Does this system always work? Obviously not. But I’ll tell you one thing. When it comes to preventing teen pregnancy, it works a helluva lot better than, Here, kid. Have a condom.

The date we published and were told by Mat McBride was December 22nd. That said, with it coming up and having not heard another word (plus, nothing on the project website), I am wondering if that’s still the plan. Will ping him. – TR

Any body know when the newly re-built Castle Playground in Roxhill park will be re-opening? I worked on it and my son and I don’t want to miss it.

I once defended hooper on here because I thought people were being too hard on him . . . <grin>

As it turns out, they weren’t being nearly hard enough.

Sorry Jo. Sorry Jan. Sorry Ken. I was wrong.

It’s very difficult to engage with a guy who publicly says things like, “No charity care at hospitals” or “People on welfare should have their kids taken away and put up for adoption.”

It’s too bad, really, because the guy could be saying something perfectly reasonable, but all I can think of when I see one of his posts now is those earlier statements of his.

    No charity care.

Put welfare kids up for adoption.

If hooper should take it into his head to retract those things, I’m sure I could forget and let bygones be bygones.

But until then . . . Sorry. Can’t do it, Sally.

Not even for old time’s sake.

Peace among humankind has been the laudable and heartfelt goal of well wishers throughout history. So why does war and strife keep marching along? Is this Peace on Earth idea just some shtick?

Is doesn’t look like signing another peace treaty, holding another conference or limiting the amount of weapons work.

How about if we look at the genesis of any and all confrontation, disharmony or conflict? Looking at the most basic unit of society, lets look into the mind and body of the individual. Let’s take a look inside ourselves.

What causes those times when you want to reach for a pressure relief valve, e.g. a liquor bottle, the valium, the running shoes, or punching that guy in the nose?

War or any kind of conflict breaks out when the accumulation of stress or tension in the minds and bodies of individuals demands relief. At those times, we need to “blow off steam”. Every person periodically relieves his/her stress for the sake of his own happiness, health and well being. And the wiser man dispels it in a manner that and causes no damage to himself or to those in his world.

Can we eliminate stress from our lives? Not unless we can find a vacuum to hang out in.

Is there a way to reliably and harmlessly dissolve the accumulation of stress and fatigue in the psychology and physiology? Yes there is and you are already very familiar with it. It’s called rest and we all take rest in the form of sleep. It goes without saying how important this rest is. We know how vital it is to spend adequate time in the sleep and dreaming states of consciousness on a daily basis. The mind and body take advantage of these resting states to heal, remove fatigue and refresh.

However, in spite of its value, the rest we get at night is not enough to dissolve deep rooted stresses that accumulate in the nervous system over the course of an active life. As stress builds up in the mind and body, we become prone to stress related diseases and conditions. The medical profession says that up to 90 percent of disease is either caused or exacerbated by stress.

When stress is wreaking such havoc in our lives, it is little wonder that when you watch the daily news, tragedy and violence dominates and history continues to repeat itself. Only the dates, places and faces change.

So what would happen if the mind and body were subjected to deeper levels of rest? Could we break the cycle? Could stress and all its ill effects be brought under control? Would we dare think anew about peace on earth?

Enter the story of an innocent yogi wandering the south of India in 1955. He reluctantly started to lecture and teach a mental technique. The number of people who sought his secular message and simple practice grew and grew. He speculated that this knowledge had universal appeal and value and he began to travel the world. People of all nations, cultures and religions were benefitting from his meditation and he saw the possibility of spiritually regenerating the world. In the 6os, college students, looking anywhere and everywhere for mind altering experiences, found a natural and effective answer to their searching. They started claiming all kinds of surprising results, prompting scientists to conduct studies.

The scientists discovered that during meditation, the students exhibited an unprecedented style of mental and physical functioning. It was so unusual that the scientists identified it as a fourth major state of consciousness, objectively different from the waking, sleeping or dreaming states of consciousness. They called it a state of restful alertness, where the mind is awake and alert while the body is in state of rest deeper than deep sleep.

So returning to the possibility of deeper levels of rest, what did the scientific research conclude about the experience of meditators during and after meditation?

During meditation, the activity of thinking settles down and the mind experiences higher levels of synchrony and coherence. The body experiences very low levels oxygen consumption and breathing slows way down. They noted a reduction in the biochemical indicators of stress.

After meditation, the mind experiences improved functioning, e.g. higher intelligence, more creativity, improved academic performance and moral reasoning.

The body is revitalized, freed from stress while becoming more disease and stress resistant. The meditator feels happier, more self actualized and relationships become more harmonious and fruitful.

So it appears that we have something that, among other benefits, promises to disarm the harmful effects of stress, that which may be the culprit keeping our dream of world peace from ever taking root.

But not so fast, you say? So what if we get a smattering of meditators dotting the globe being cool and calm in their own little berg? There are more than 6 billion of us occupying this little planet, everyone with their own idea of how to achieve the good life.

It turns out that we don’t need everyone marching in step on this one. The scientists also discovered that meditators produce such a unifying, healthy and harmonious effect in their environment, that when only a small percentage of a population participates, the trends of life change in that area. They found that crime, accidents, and hospital admissions fell while positive indicators rose. It looks like anyone, from the comfort of their own home, can make a real contribution to a cause whose time may have finally arrived.

If you would like to become a participant or to learn more about what appears to be the most viable means of creating a world of lasting peace and prosperity, I’d be glad to hear from you.

Here’s the combined rodent + sanitation report on Nickelsville, as compiled by Seattle King County Public Health. A copy was sent to me by Nick Licata’s office a few days ago:

    http://tinyurl.com/NV-sanitation-report

For those of you who go down to camp frequently, the report will confirm what you already know: that the place is dirty and infested with rats.

For the rest of you, this info may come as a bit of an eye-opener. But then, perhaps that’s just what you needed. An eye-opener.

    ****************************************************************************************

Conditions at the camp have always been good for rats, and it’s only getting worse, as the report shows. Moreover, as the rat population booms, the rats are becoming ever bolder about getting into the tents and the food supplies (including the pet food supplies.)

    *****************************************************************************************

As you can see, the report’s author is looking at the situation dispassionately and making recommendations as if this were a typical industrial-type site and the owner wanted to do the right thing and clean it up. In this case, however, it is unlikely that many of these recommendations will be implemented. Of if they are implemented, it will be only temporarily.

    ► Rotating tent sites?

► Elevating tents with cinder blocks?

► Putting all food in rodent-proof containers (!)

► No more food “composting” (!!)

Come on! If this stuff was doable, don’t you think they would have dood it already?

And the list goes on and on and on.

There are other kinds of recommendations, too. And these are targeted at food safety and general hygiene. The hygiene part reads like a list of “Everything SHARE and the City should have done.” Or “Everything DBP (and others) TOLD you guys to do from the git-go.”

Hand-washing stations with warm water and soap? Well . . . Duh!

–Given that the City itself has no intention of plumbing or wiring the place, I can’t imagine how this warm-water handwashing station concept could be actualized. And why would it be, when the City doesn’t even WANT that?

    ****************************************************************************************

No timeline is given for any of these recommendations to be implemented, even though by law I think there should have been one. Some items are marked as “Do Immediately” but there’s no indication of what will happen if they aren’t “done immediately.”

    *****************************************************************************************

My take on this report is as follows:

    1) Short term – the City is responding to a complaint made by a citizen, but they’re acting as if they initiated the complaint on their own so as to make it look like they’re on top of things, which in fact they never have been.

    2) Long term – the City is building a case on which to shut down the camp.

    Watch this space.

i didn’t visit the Hanoi Hilton

but i have met John McCain personally

for a while there he and i played in the same playground in Scottsdale

i would not characterize him as a good man.

you didn’t have to be a good man to fly an airplane, get shot down and spend time in the Hanoi Hilton.

You do have to be a good man to treat those you care for well.

John McCain does not have good history with those who have been entrusted to his care…

including but not limited to the native populations of his state

When it comes to Mormons’ relationship to the larger society there are two countervailing tendencies at work.

On the one hand is the separtist tendency. This is what made Mormons load up the wagons and head out west in the first place. They were trying to escape religious persecution, and to do that they had to go off by themselves.

On the other hand is the assimilationist tendency. This is why Mormons can drop major tenets of their theology on a dime; they want to be a part of the “in crowd.” First they dropped polygamy to become the state of Utah. Later, they dropped the Whites-only priesthood rule so they could broaden their base and be taken seriously by the rest of the country.

The separatist tendency has been on the wane for some time now, so don’t go looking for Mormons to secede anytime soon. Sure, they’re disappointed that Romney lost. At the same time, they’re gratified that the election was so close and that, in the end, it didn’t turn into yet another excuse for the rest of America to bash Mormons.

All in all, a good outcome for both sides.

And it did look a bit lost. Not scared so much as just not sure of it’s surroundings. It hunkered down for a bit in the low brush next to a big rhodie and then popped up into the rhodie a bit uneasily. Definitely not injured but more unsure of how to navigate around the branches. Unlike the jays and other birds that flit around it like a playground.

It struck me that this bird wasn’t used to that type of environment. Maybe I was just projecting having not seen anything like it?

After all the homophobic slurs are done with, here’s the point. Marriage is licensed by the state, whether you like it or not. That’s why you get a “marriage license”. It’s a contract you enter into that requires a sanction from the state. The state doesn’t care at all what kind of ceremony, religious or not, that you have to comemmorate it. Once you buy the license you’re married as far as the state is concerned.

Since the state is conferring certain rights on those with a marriage license it is discrimination to deny those rights to certain classes of people based on sexual orientation. It really has nothing to do with religion, or polygamy, or incest, or animal abuse. Why is that so hard to understand?

Hey Redblack. Everyone can get married. Nobody is stopping them. It might not be the person you want to marry but they can get married.

When I got married I was offended that I needed a Marriage License required by the state.

Personally, I didn’t mind JV’s pointed humor or sarcasm. Democrats complain more than Republicans and don’t laugh as much, unless they are attacking Republicans.

Hmmm. This has got me thinking, if I were a member of the LDS or some similarly minded folks, I might start an initiative push for multiple partners. In the Arab Spring countries the more non-western Imam’s and followers who have come to power are pushing to have multiple wives again. Even if it is 10 percent of them that is still 100 million.

Locally, I have been told it takes a village. I think I have a solution for all of the single moms out there. I have some attractive neighbors who are single (and some attractive married ones, but we need to leave them alone, it wouldn’t be proper to be a home wrecker). I have needs… I mean. . . room in my home to help. Lets allow polygamy so men can marry the single moms. It works for the undecided gender participant. Straight, Gay, Bi, all get to join. Call it a civil union orgy. The Government will love it. Instant support group for the gals, guys, and undecided. Woo hoo. Wait a minute. I will only vote for traditional polygamy. One man many women. God help me when they gang up on me.

Nah. I voted for prop 74 and I am glad that the guys who were against it were up there. It is their right. If you call it hate you are being closed minded.

It really isn’t about marriage, it is about government involvement in your lives regarding partnerships. I like Smitty’s idea but you don’t have to. Liberty. Love It.

Stay on topic, please. Offtopic comments deleted.

To the OP: That’s not the “community”‘s response. It’s my response as site editor – The forum is lower-traffic on weekends and no one had answered, so I offered one option that came immediately to mind. Thought you were looking for someplace to help.

The community-based fundraisers for Japan, for example, pointed to efforts like the Red Cross and other agencies – it is not efficient for citizens to either find individual people to send money to directly, or to round up their own planeload of goods.

The Red Cross not only helps in big events like this, but in small ones … When there’s a house fire and the residents can’t go back in, for example, as mentioned in countless fire stories we’ve reported, it’s the Red Cross who is called in to offer temporary shelter and other help.

The Salvation Army also is helping, if you have something against donating to the Red Cross.

    http://donate.salvationarmyusa.org/disaster

    -Tracy

P.S. To Jan’s point about “local TV stations” – even the ones back East are fundraising for the Red Cross’s efforts.

To NT, I don’t know what communication has been sent specifically because my child isn’t in his class and I don’t personally know anyone who is. The playground talk, though, is very little information has been given other than to not expect him back before the end of October.

I’ve know Mr. Keller for almost 10 years. He helped my son through a very tough kindergarten year (he was the teacher next door) and has been his soccer coach. I hold him in the highest regard and I’ll do anything I can to help this tragic situation. Things like this, whatever the outcome, can ruin a teacher’s career in addition to all the damage done to the students and families who are going through this mess. Mr. Keller has taught hundreds of children in not only West Seattle, but other schools in Seattle as well, and this is no way to treat him!

I have faith that Mr. Keller will be back at Schmitz Park, but there will have to be a lot of healing and building bridges back when he does.

    >>Any ideas on possible legal actions? I’d love for the Times to get hit with a big fine.

You can’t sue the Times merely for sending you unsolicited material, since their right to do that is apparently protected under the First Amendment:

    10/12/12

The Yellow Pages industry won a big victory yesterday when the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals struck down Seattle’s tough opt-out ordinance in a unanimous decision. The court based its decision on the finding that print directories offer more than just advertising and are entitled to the same protection as other media like newspapers.

Dex One CEO Alfred Mockett added this statement: “Today’s court decision is a victory for free speech and the rights of local business owners in the city of Seattle. We have contended from the outset this action by the City Council was a burden on local businesses and a violation of our First Amendment rights.”

See the difference between 2.8 million starts, with a lower population base..? miws? Compared to less than 800K with a much larger population base? No Ms. JoB thos workers did the right thing, they migrated out of states with less opportunity to states with more. You would have had them stay and make 30 year mortgage payments on 800K loans for homes worth 400K? Better to start over again. Funny, the other half announced her company is paying a 5K bonus for employes that can lead HR to recruit new bio-engineers, bio researchers, …there is a critical shortage of workers. Looking to relocate to Charlotte NC, or Atlanta anyone? See once again the states that are gaining populations.. the ones where the electoral votes are shifting.. to the south and the heartland. redblack.. I have been in this rodeo a long time.. mostly in the business side of the trades… I speak from a touch of experience. Like I said, I have had my tin cup out in this biz and I have the tax records to know when income really did get spread around. We can do better than this. unless you finally kill the little engine that could with too many freight cars and too steep a grade. That would be Obama… the less than 800K starts sorta guy…. he has presided over the longest decline in middle income since the Great Depression… Oh yea.. that 7.8 per unemployment rate that smelled like line curing cod?… looks like California did indeed understate their unemployment by a whopping 64 per cent. .. oooops. Guess that will have to come out of the stump speech. We are down to what now? Umm Big Bird and calling the Governor a bullshitter? Ah.. that civil discourse. What was that thing Obama said… something like..” when you have no ideas, you demonize others? Way to be presidential.. and all. Teach those kids ward politics of Chicago.. no wonder he can’t play nice with others. He has a potty mouth on the playground.

did you know that Jan has one of those good luck magic wishing pumpkins at the door of her temporary home?

i gave it a rub as i went in tonight and it must have worked because her color has improved.

ok.. so the oxygen might have had something to do with that.. she is back sipping the magic elixir until she is ambulatory enough to give the fellow down the hall a run for his money …

Jan does not like to lose.

it’s going to be a little while before she can make it up the steps to her house…

He did? I don’t think so. 2/3 of those surveyed didn’t think so. 41% gave Obama the edge, 34% called it for Romney, and the rest called it a tie. .. that’s a crushing? OK then… Benghazi is coming up Monday… and the defunct Al Qaida ? I see Obama dropped reference to it in his two stump speeches… he ain’t crowing about crushing them anymore. If that’s the highest mountain he climbs, no need for oxygen masks! But let’s stay with NF… I like her track..

If you like $5.00 gas.. wait.. do you remember Stephen Chu NF? The one who testified before congress that the energy secretary should not try and reduce gas prices? The one that said we should let gas prices rise to European levels? About $8.20 per gallon? That would take about $3200 dollars out of every household income in the country. If you thought $5.00 gallon was high.. wait until a second Obama term… you might hit $10 per gallon… !! If you like $5 gal gas.. vote for Obama, you will love $10 gallon. Think it might increase food prices, commuting costs? Trips for the kids to soccer, school? See how that fits NF? Of course Obama ran from $5 gas like a scalded chicken last night… oh no… not during elections. But we know … don’t we? It’s from his cap and trade mentality.

““Somehow,” Chu said, “we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe

Good dads do make a hell of a difference in violence and crime. See Chicago. The blood bath that is Chicago .. gang participation…. single parent homes dominate membership. Not a PC thing to say is it? Dads supervise their kids, provide role models…add more social mobility to live in safer, more secure communities.

First, I am totally guilty of allowing my dog off lease at certain times and in certain places at Lincoln. However, given recent events I doubt we will do this ever again. Even though it is once or twice a month, at most, it is not worth it and as has been pointed out here, is not allowed for very good reasons related to safety. There have been two incidents in addition to the goose that cause me to be really worried about dog behavior at Lincoln. We often hang out at the middle play ground (with our dog tied up while kid swings) and twice recently we have witnessed dog owners with very large and aggressive dogs allow them to wander into the playground while they completely did not pay attention. We teach our kid not to pet strange dogs but having dogs twice her size run up to her while playing is too dangerous. Owners werewolf walking at least 100 yards away not paying attention when this happened. Second, at the same playground last weekend an older woman with a large poodle extended her leash right up to our tied up dog, which he then attacked. I lept to my dog’s defense as she just shrugged and walked away. I will be honest, in both instances I cursed and complained in a less than civil manner. I need to get better at my reactions. Honestly, Lincoln is not a place to feel safe around dogs. Do people not watch Cesar? Get rid of your extend a leashes!!! Our dog will always be on leash and by our side here from now on, and even that doesn’t feel safe! Parks needs to spend at least a week ticketing bad behavior to change this dynamic.

I can’t bake, but I can cook- if that sweetens the deal. :)
