Deliver meals and a smile! We are looking for volunteers in West Seattle for Wednesday mornings, as needed when one of the weekly drivers will be away. Drivers arrive around 9 am and are typically done with their route in 1-2 hours. Training is provided and mileage is reimbursable while making deliveries.

Qualifications: Communication skills, flexibility, reliable, attention to detail, people skills, good cheer and a commitment to the well-being of homebound elders. This is an on-going volunteer commitment.

As a Meals on Wheels Volunteer, you will belong to a team committed to helping homebound seniors maintain their health and independence with nutritious food, personal contact, and caring service.

Another thing to look for when you own a bottle; they have expiration dates. You may think you’re saving a few dollars by hanging on to that old bottle but many places will not refill your bottle if it’s out of date. (You can get them re-certified but I don’t think it’s worth the hassle.)

P.S.(A): Did you know your Air Bottle that you may have to pump up tires also have an expiration date due to an explosion risk? Air Bottles and Compressors with bottles are forbidden in the interior Pit Areas of racing due to the explosion hazard. Always drain your compressor tanks to prevent (or actually just slow down) rust. Please don’t take tanks for granted.

I guess it stands to reason that the only person in West Seattle who keeps their cats indoors is still a scofflaw. Do you have the same objection to car license fees, or do you think we should all bear that burden whether we have cars or not? Animal services are grossly underfunded in Seattle. Just pay your fee.

We need your skills to help prepare and serve nutritious meals in our “Junction Diner” for seniors and guests at the Center. The City of Seattle license fees are recently imposed (August 2018). My property taxes have risen much faster than inflation over the past several years, and many orders of magnitude more than the new pet license fee. Why don’t they raid the soda tax (which will collect at least 25% more than anticipated, at least $5-7MM ). As someone once told me it doesn’t matter which pocket the funds come from it’s the same set of pants. And same with taxes and while I don’t have children, I can see the benefit in paying taxes to educate them. But this tax is like taxing for something I have that no one else does…What if we funded education depending on whether you had kids or not? My cats will not impose a cost on society because they are not ill-educated kids and are not let free to roam the ‘hood and chance being coyote fare.

Welcome to West Seattle! It is a GREAT place to live despite the occasional things that could make you go insane (dogs off leash, fireworks, dog poop deposited in your garbage can, people parking in front of your house, package thieves, etc.). Fortunately these don’t make everyone go insane and don’t happen to everyone every day.

You don’t even have to look very hard to see some of the awesome things about living here. Neighbors helping neighbors, kids releasing salmon into streams, neighbors that cut down blackberry bushes to beautify a sidewalk or paint over graffiti within a couple days of it being put up, flowers planted in roundabouts, free summer concerts, endless views of mountains and water. This really is a special place to live – hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

The purpose of those fees, like the taxes that childless people pay that go towards schools, is to fund the infrastructure that goes towards animal shelters and the like. Dog bite. Today about Noon I was bitten badly on my calf by a dog while walking along the sidewalk of 42nd Ave SW at about Juneau or Dawson St. I did absolutely nothing to provoke the dog. I just greeted the walker and the dog and walked past, and then the dog bit me. Blood was gushing from my leg, so I exited the scene and walked to an urgent care center who sent me to ER downtown. After it happened I was in a bit of shock and failed to call 911 or get the dog walkers or owners info. Does anyone who lives along or near 42nd Ave SW near Dawson or Juneau know of the owners of the dog? It was being walked by a woman dog walker, age about 35. The dog is a black mixed breed, mostly Labrador. The dog is small for a Lab, less than 3′ tall, with a longish snout. I need to find out if the dog has been thoroughly vaccinated. Any information is appreciated.

On the West Seattle Bridge after the high rise and on 99 Northbound I often notice the smell of fermenting wort or the smell one gets when brewing beer or malt for whiskey. I am guessing it is the predominance of Whiskey/Beer brewers along 1st Ave north and south of Spokane. Given our wind patterns (N/S/SW) I’d be surprised if it hits Genessee or Admiral but we do get the odd east wind every now and then.

Perhaps that is the smell people are noticing?

I received a flyer from city in early fall saying I had to get my cats licensed. They stay indoors 100% of the time. Among the so-called benefits of the license, according to the city, “Reunites lost pets with their owners”, “Helps fund the care and adoption of shelter animals” and “Protect your community from animal related issues”.

Well my two rescue cats are microchipped, spayed, and totally indoors. So reuniting my cats with me is unlikely, and if it happens then we can be reunited when the microchip is read (which I already paid for). In addition to adopting my cats I donate money to the humane society when the cat mobile visits the West Seattle Farmer’s Market or Thriftway. The only animal related issue of concern for my cats is my feeding and caring for them, and in the very unlikely event they escape they may become coyote food.

I guess if they called it a dog license they would never have created this law and let’s face it, dogs are the primary target.

So while I am Randy Rulefollower a majority of the time this is one case where I am a scofflaw. If this is such a critical need they should fund it out of the general fund and cut back on needless expenses (and please don’t tell me there aren’t any in the City’s budget which continues to grow beyond inflation–Families and Education Levy anyone?)

Hello Commuter Families!

As you know, WSF has been revising the triangle ferry routes to improve service and reliability. WSF has been partnering with VISD during this process and I would like to thank them for their collaboration. WSF has recently posted their final schedule that will be effective starting March 31, 2019.

I would like to take a few minutes to update you on the most recent WSF Triangle Route Schedule. Please see the following initial notes:
Vashon Island High School and McMurray Middle School sailings:

Fauntleroy students: no change for primary commute sailings; 7:05am /3:25pm for regular days and 9:30am on late start days. In addition, the schedule includes 5:05pm and 6:45pm sailings from Vashon to Fauntleroy, which may help students, staff, and families who are returning from after school activities.

Southworth students: 6:45am/3:30pm for regular days and 9:20am on late start days. There are also plenty of later options for after school activities or the like, including 3:55, 5:00, 5:35, 6:05, 6:40, 7, and later.
Chautauqua Elementary School sailings:

Fauntleroy students: 8:25am /4:40pm for regular days and 10:40am on late start days.

Southworth students: 7:55am /5:00pm for regular days and 10:20am on late start days. The morning sailing departs earlier in the AM, however, the afternoon sailing returning to Southworth is earlier than the current PM sailing, so commuting time will stay approximately the same.
Again, it appears the impact will be minimal for our commuter families and we are thankful to be able to continue to provide our families with the high quality educational experiences they have come to know and expect from the Vashon Island School District.

Then Senior Center of West Seattle is in need of an awesome volunteer to lead our Food Bank distribution on Tuesdays. This position requires organization of our food donations that come from the West Seattle Food Bank, helping to get folks checked in, and working with other volunteers to get the food organized and displayed for distribution on Tuesday mornings, about 2 -3 hours weekly. Based on the weekly inventory, you will also call in the order to the West Seattle Food Bank on Monday afternoons. This is a rare opportunity to get involved with our amazing Senior Center in an extremely rewarding role – helping our community to get food they need and appreciate. Ideally, this person would start on Tuesday, 1/8/19 and get trained with our existing lead volunteer. This is an ongoing, Tuesday morning commitment, working 8:30-10:30, and calling in the order on Monday afternoons.

Note: opening and closing shifts will include 1-2 hours of solo time; expect open and setup, close and clean, including bathroom, dish and front-end maintenance. Full-time is roughly 4 shifts per week.
