We finally emptied the propane tank on our gas grill tonight. Fortunately we had a backup… but even that is only half full. Where should I take the empty one for refill or replacement?

I go to Junction True Value and replace mine. There is a place down on West Marginal way that advertises that it fills Propane Tanks. Or you can go the Home Depot. Although I had a bad experience with them last time I took my tank there. I had to go inside and pay before hand and came out and the sales person told me that they were out of propane. So I had to go back into the store and stand in line for 15 minutes (or so it seemed) to get a refund. I told the cashier that they need to have a better feel for the stock on hand. Its not fair to have to stand in line and pay for something in good faith and then they not deliver. I even called the Manager on Duty and complained about the situation and was told I could have a credit of $5.00. I told her I would never come back for propane again and I haven’t. I use to have it filled at AA Rentals on Fauntleroy but since they moved I have just done the exchange at JTV.

We get ours refilled at the U-Haul on 35th near Morgan.

35th and Morgan at U-Haul is a good one.

Hopey, I had the same experience with finding a place to refill 2 of them. Drove to my old standards near Westwood villiage to no prevail.

Found one on the outskirts of White Center….it was a task, and my stomach was growling like a cat.

Keep a spare full. It is part of your earthquake prep and as long as your not searching with the hordes on Sat or Sun afternoon you will have no trouble finding a fill or exchange spot.

Home despot recently installed a credit card operated 24 hour exchange system.

The Walgreens on 35th also has exchange cylinders but are limited to when they are open.

The Uhaul on 35th does a fill but I don’t find that nearly as convenient as the exchange.

Thanks everyone! I know some places are more reputable than others, which is why I asked instead of just driving around.

Ken, that is exactly why I am looking — we are now using our “spare” so I want to be sure to refill or exchange the empty one promptly. Once the spare is emptied, that will get refilled too. And I keep telling my SO he should get together with you. :) He is traveling a lot on business right now though. I’m sure he’ll connect with you eventually.

Another thing to look for when you own a bottle; they have expiration dates. You may think you’re saving a few dollars by hanging on to that old bottle but many places will not refill your bottle if it’s out of date. (You can get them re-certified but I don’t think it’s worth the hassle.)

P.S.(A): Did you know your Air Bottle that you may have to pump up tires also have an expiration date due to an explosion risk? Air Bottles and Compressors with bottles are forbidden in the interior Pit Areas of racing due to the explosion hazard. Always drain your compressor tanks to prevent (or actually just slow down) rust. Please don’t take tanks for granted.
