Okay, we went there for lunch today and I thought I’d report back here with my RAVE! Yes, everyone working there was exceptionally friendly and welcoming. We were asked if it was our first time there (they must be getting a lot of new business from the Groupon), and then learned that they roll their own meatballs, cook the beef for the philly’s, and get the pastrami from Jersey.
We decided on a Philly Cheesesteak and a Hot Pastrami sandwich, and shared them. Both were excellent, but for our tastes, the pastrami was the standout. Very, very tasty – my husband is a pastrami connoisseur of sorts and loved it – it’s shaven thin so it’s nice and fluffy, and overflows the excellent soft roll with semolina on it…
Next time I’d like to try the traditional pastrami sandwich, which has thousand island dressing and coleslaw on it. Yes, there will be a next time! Although we’ll probably share a sandwich and save room for one of those cannolis!
In this budget climate, public/private partnerships are becoming a means to fund a number of projects/services which were previously govt. only.
Applying that trend to dog parks:
a group of highly motivated citizens secure an appropriate plot of land with a benevolent landowner willing to 1) partner with govt entity and lease it for purposes of city or county dog
park 2) comply with codes related to same 3) partner with citizen volunteers to maintain the plot to comply with code.
These economic times require creativity and hard work by citizens. The days of expecting any govt to operate according to previous financial paradigms is over, for awhile. At least.
Just my opinion. Private – public partnerships is where it is at.
I live half a mile from Westcrest Park. It’s definitely in West Seattle.
I’d like to see more dog parks. I don’t have a dog but there’s obviously a need for them. It’s going to be an uphill battle, though, since West Seattle already has one.
Redbox can’t compete on selection, their machines are only the size of a coke machine. But they can be handy in a pinch. When Admiral switched out Girl w/ the Dragon Tattoo for Predators in the 9pm slot, our get-together was able to get the dvd from the Erskine Redbox and save the party. I would not buy from Blockbuster for the same reason as CB: they were censoring movies. Caused quite a stir at SIFF when Blockbuster was a sponsor.
in the meantime..
i think that if you cut trees or destabilize a slope in any way without a sign off from a licensed geotech engineer and a landslide from your property blocks a public street.. you should foot the bill for cleaning it up…

i think it will take a major catastrophe and civil lawsuits against both homeowners and local government agencies to force the issue:(
i was bitten by a hobo in my early 20s.
the resulting inflammation didn’t heal for 3 years.
for a decade or two after that the bite shed dead skin continuously.
40 years later i just have a scar.

Between a rock and a hard place near Marine View Drive: Landslides a block or two each way of our hillside. Neighbors craving more water view skeletonize their madronas, cut away underbrush, create nature paths for their children down this steep hillside, leaving cut trimmings on hillside which pile up and collect water but have nothing attaching them to the hillside, don’t put down netting or plant the hillsides to prevent erosion. Perfect setup for erosion and eventual landslide.
They were annoyed when another neighbor filled out a complaint to the authorities when they altered a slope and cut trees in the past. When I complained about another neighbor in the distant past, the inspector who agreed the neighbor had committed an infraction was fired (!!!) and the case was dismissed. When I complained about this they did not refer me to someone with knowledge of this topic who would help me, but someone new to the council who admitted he knew nothing of this area. I was disgusted. It is unclear why complaints receive such variable attention and action.
In the event of a landslide, who will take action against the person who set up the conditions for this to happen? Heading into the rainy season, and with the landslide mentioned just downhill of us, I think it’s odd that people do not act mindfully to prevent landslides. And valid complaints seem to be set aside.
Waterfront property has direct access to roads to the beach; marine high bluff residents do not, for very good reasons. One cannot convert high bluff property to a beachfront lot by creating a thoroughfare down a hillside which is unbuildable because of landslide potential. Why all the educational workshops but no clear guidelines given to marine high bluff property owners when or before they purchase this property, or enforcement of guidelines when there is an infraction?

But your post stated that you had seen the car drive up and down the street several times before choosing your house, and you noticed an unusual knocking pattern. I would agree that a 911 call is ok, and let the police decide if its crying wolf. One patrol car sent your way shouldn’t “bog down the system”. The police can sift thru the validity of calls at that point in time. Last week, I saw a white Chevy 4×4 p/u slowing cruising the block. Passenger jumps out, back tracks several houses, peers into a car port, then goes back to the p/u (which has moved on several houses). They had metal junk in the bed and definitly looked out of place. I called 911 and a patrol checked it out in >5 mins. Sometimes, you have to go with your gut and let the chips fall. I admire your desire to keep the system clear, but I think you had a valid concern based on the driving behavior and that they ran away from you. Glad to hear it all worked out in the end.
I am looking for recommendations for a reasonably priced and reliable plumber.
I will put it out there that I called Southwest Heating & Plumbing and despite an outrageous bid I will not use or consider them due to the fact that they left the crawl space open on the outside of my house after I specifically asked them to make sure they closed it. Rats from the neighbors got under the house (I didn’t realize it was open for 3 days) and management at SWHP told me they’d call me back on 3 occasions when I called them about it and I could never get a call back from anyone.
I’m looking to have the section beneath my kitchen and possibly also my bathroom repiped. Currently I have very little pressure in this section of the house and the water is discolored.
Thank you for any tips! Looking on Craigslist at all the people advertising their services is a bit daunting…and without recommendations.

free public wifi will NEVER be peer to peer or ad hoc. It only is usable for internet access with multiple clients as an access point.
In theory it is possible to bridge ad hoc networks and aggregate route to the internet, but it is usually a pointless complexity for free network access.
free wifi is available to qwest dsl customers at every mcdonalds. city wifi at seattle public libraries and king county public libraries also have their own.

Datamuse, have you ever seen the Gary Larson cartoon where the spiders have made a web across the bottom of the playground slide? “If we pull this off, we’ll eat like kings!” Hilarious.
This situation definitely warranted a 9-1-1 call. I’m told that the police take casing/prowling calls very seriously, and will show up quickly. I wouldn’t count on it based on experience, but that’s what I hear.

We retrieved the Passport last night from the Redmond Police. We were anticipating the process to be quick — instead it took a few hours due to all of the property and items that were in the vehicle that weren’t ours. Items included key chains with several shaved keys, a new stereo was installed (likely stolen property), police scanner with a frequency reference sheet, radar detector, GPS, backpacks with various tools, pawn shop receipts, drugs etc, etc. The license plates that they installed had been registered to another Passport, so a lot of thought obviously went into this whole thing. Apparently the driver that took off on foot after he was pulled over was able to steal another vehicle and crashed it before he took off on foot again — he has not been caught yet. Good news is the vehicle is in great shape. After we have it professionally detailed (to remove the smoke smell and tamper tape on the outside), it will be worth driving again.

What about diatomaceous earth? It slices up the outer shell (exoskeleton?) of creepers and crawlers. Sprinkled into cracks and crevices, in dark corners, etc., (where they are travelling laterally, even horizontally and vertically, but never migrating inward;)) it seems to work really well in my garage and basement knee walls, but you wouldn’t want the stuff where it will blow around too much. That’s probably not a great idea for any mammalian lungs.
Unless maybe if it is food grade diatomaceous earth. That’s a safe option for nearby two and four-legged creatures, but might be just the ticket to take out the six or eight-legged ones.
Sorry to bring mammals into this fine debate.
Or would Boric acid powder work? Dessicates fleas, eventually, without harm to humans or pets.So maybe, spiders? Dunno. If your seriously upset by these critters, check out it out.

If you don’t mind me asking, how many people does your company employ?
I’m not clear on whether you’re worried about the tax you’d have to pay after getting a windfall from a buyout, or whether you’re worried about having to pay taxes on a bigger paycheck that you’d presumably be getting after your company gets on its feet (with or without a buyout.) In any case, you won’t be paying the tax for whatever length of time you keep giving yourself a smaller paycheck—unless 1098 fails to differentiate between what the corporation makes and what you make, which seems to be one of the issues in question.
Here’s what the text of 1098 says about S Corps:
Sec. 504. PARTNERSHIPS AND S CORPORATIONS.
(2) S corporations are not subject to tax under this chapter. Shareholders of S corporations are subject to tax under this chapter in their separate or individual capacities.
(3) “S corporation income” includes both distributed and undistributed federal taxable income of the S corporation.
Also, FYI: The top tax rate under 1098 (for individual income above $500,000) will be $15,000 + 9%. The actual percentage rage will thus fluctuate. Therefore, your total tax could actually be slightly more than 10%, but the more taxable income more you make, the more it will move downward toward 9%.
Anonyme- OH SNAP! While I appreciate that spiders were your field of study, and this technically may make you an expert, I think that my 27 years of fearing spiders far surpases your expertise. Plus, I find myself often closely examining the epigyum and palps (thank you wikipedia) of spiders to positively identify them, thank you.
I wasn’t referring to the PNW- I was referring to Pocatello, Idaho where I grew up (do you know if they have the South American and Australian species there?) I once heard there was the largest concentration of hobo spiders ANYWHERE between there and another nearby town and ever since I’ve been repeating this fact. I’ve said it enough times that I insist it must be true, but I can’t find a concentration map using google so I can’t back it up with facts, which are pretty much useless anyways.
No but seriously, thanks for the info and I don’t mind if you bust my spider myths (although very bold with the Rottweiler avitar, very bold…) I’m well aware I’m not going to spider proof my house, but if you could direct your expertise in my direction to give me some tips I’d appreciate it. :-)

Hey, far worse things could happen to somebody my age.
The wait is quite normal considering most folks are just a few weeks away from running their heating systems as the weather starts to change.

We had the same problem with our dachshund. Whenever we moved to a new place, it took the dog a week or two not to be too freaked out when we left for any time over 10 min. After we left the dog would do this freaked ou yelp/scream/bark nonstop for hours until we got home. We didn’t know until after the first week in the new place. Our neighbors didnt even let us know here was a problem until they were almost crazy with annoyance. Turns out it was a case of separation anxiety. (Sounds lame but true). We talked to some folks and found we needed to give the dog some independence while we were around (no sleeping in the same bed, giving her her own area, short walks around the blocks without her, to get her used to the fact we will be leaving but coming back every time, etc.)
After a few days of the new arrangements, the barking stopped and everything was cool.
The odds are they either don’t know there is a problem or they don’t know how to handle it. Either way you need to talk to them. Maybe point them to a website that has advice for this kind of thing. I find people react well to honest straightforward communication.

Weird timing (or completely appropriate timing, maybe): in the past week, I have come across three house spiders in my condo. I’ve lived here since January and previously never saw a spider; must be that time of year.
Also, house spiders – even the giant variety – are harmless unless threatened, at which point they may bite. They *do* eat harmful bugs and even some harmful spiders. If you can live with them, great, it’s good for your home.
Don’t kid yourself by thinking that throwing a house spider outside instead of killing it is humane; house spiders do not live outdoors, and will usually die anyway. If you really can’t live with house spiders, just kill them (or rehome with someone who likes spiders? :-) ). I’ll admit that I’m uneasy with spiders in my home, especially since I don’t have other bugs, so I either capture and set free in the building hallway, or kill (and then feel guilty, of course!).
I took slacks in there once for alteration: take in the waist and hem. When I got them back, she had done both, but didn’t account for the hem length AFTER bringing the waist in, so I was left with two pairs of highwater pants that couldn’t be fixed. Never went back.
I’ve had much better outcomes from the dry cleaner at Admiral & California.
That’s not an exaggeration. At times it’s a constant stream for 5 hours. It’s a boston terrier. They’re new to the neighborhood. Their back door is equipped with a doggie door so it’s free to roam while their away, which I think is a lot. Their house is less than twenty feet from mine.

If I wasn’t home every day I probably wouldn’t notice it as much. Some days are better than others. I’ve learned to drown out the barking that permeates my window and door barrier with music. Some days it barks into the evening hours as late as midnight which makes it a little tough to sleep. I had some friends over and we were trying to relax in the back. Couldn’t with the constant barking.

I need to let them know what’s going on. I’m not going to remain anonymous with them, I think that’s important. Does anyone out there have a barking dog that a neighbor complained to you about? How did you remedy the situation so it’s not as disruptive to your complaining neighbor?
