As others have pointed out, we enjoy some of the lowest electric rates in the country. We do also however have some challenges including aging infrastructure, reduced snow pack, etc. We need more of a rainy day fund (or a “lack of snow pack fund”), not to mention modernization to our grid.

Adding real-time monitoring/metering, demand controls, (smart grid technology in general) etc. will better position Seattle for the future, allow us to more efficiently use distributed power sources, and promote the development of innovative new services here in Seattle.

So, put me down as being in favor of a slight increase to already super-low rates.

What I would also love to see is more sources of low/no interest funding for energy retrofits: that would allow business and home owners lower overall costs, even with increasing rates. The upfront cost to retrofit can be a problem in this economy, but the long term benefits to lower ongoing costs, higher level of comfort, not to mention job creation could be huge. Unfortunately the City can’t offer these types of loans due to the State constitution…

JoB – Privatization would of SCL would be a disaster. Most of us have little idea how LUCKY we are that City Light owns its own generation, transmission and distribution system.

Note that TFA is supported by Seattle Public Schools. The article does not say that SPS wants to tie TFA teachers to an apprenticeship in an underderserved school or teaching specialty; however, there are strong indications that TFA teachers would only be used where there had been some difficulty filling a slot. One of TFA’s main organizational goals, after all, is to help students.

Teach for America was started in 1990 by Wendy Kopp, then a young college graduate, and has grown steadily. Its overall goal is to help eliminate the gap in achievement between ethnic groups, and it wants its members to work in low-income communities.

Despite their reluctance to commit [to the standard TFA program], Seattle administrators say they are confident they would have places for 20 to 25 Teach for America teachers.

“We believe strongly that there will be positions open in our schools, because there always are,” said Holly Ferguson [director of policy and government relations for SPS].

Another thing to consider is that TFA teachers are expected to work toward a permanent teaching certificate while they are teaching.

As far as TFA teachers being used to teach kids during a strike, you would probably get mixed reactions from both parents and kids on that. It’s a tough call.

I’m going to drop the author of this piece a line, asking her if there’s any hard data from SPS on teacher shortages.

Well, it looks like some of us seriously overestimated support for a state income tax. (WaPolitico, you still out there? I owe you a steak.)

I think the honest thing for us 1098 supporters to do now is to admit that most Washingtonians simply don’t agree with us and move on. It’s tempting to shake our fists and curse the Philistines, but the more constructive thing to do would be to ask ourselves why ordinary Washingtonians don’t trust government or don’t think their taxes are being well-spent.

In any case, with less money at our disposal, now government and citizens alike will be forced to take another look and see just what government does do for us. At the same time, we’ll have to rethink what we are able — and not able — to do for ourselves, both as individuals and as a community.

It is unavoidable that some essential programs will be cut. As that happens, though, I hope folks on this forum will stay engaged in the debate and keep the pressure on government to spend our tax money where it will do the most good.

We’re still hemmorhaging money on two senseless wars, for example, so now might be a good time for people to put some real pressure on Patty Murray, Maria Cantwell, and others, to put a stop to that.

Republicans will huff and puff in the House and they will blame a deadlocked Democratic Senate for not passing actual bills….

and god forbid.. if something slips through.. they will blame the President who signed it..

just like they blamed Clinton for the bill a republican House and Senate passed that allowed the combining of private and commercial banking that set the stage for the sub prime mess to get so far out of hand and nearly collapse our economy.

If he hadn’t signed it.. none of this would have happened.

I have always said that Clinton had a lot more to be criticized for than Monica..

but I thought our side really should have held his feet to the fire for that one…

not the hypocrites who crafted and passed the bill.

It never ceases to amaze me how people vote against their own best self-interests like acemotel said, and because of something that might or might not happen in the future. I’ll bet most of those same people have not earthquake proofed their homes and yet a future earthquake is more certain than the legislature tinkering with a newly passed income tax. Some of those voters will no doubt be the first to scream bloody murder when the state has to make further cuts to services, education, state jobs, etc., and the State might have to raise taxes on the middle class anyhow as it struggles to find way to deal with the budget. Why it’s so important to so many voters that the wealthy among us and large corporations never have to feel the impact of taxes like the poor and small business owners, completely astounds me.

I hate to rain on your parade. Yesterday the Dems controlled all 3 branches of the Legislature, today they control 2, and the 2 most powerful at that. While I would never vote R, I actually think the left will be better in the long run losing the house. It’s simple. No income tax until state spending is curbed. The state constitution would need to be changed too, I think.

It may have worked too. I couldn’t say, but the legislature would have eventually found a way to tinker with it.

That is why people said NO!

I’ve stopped running in West Seattle parks because of the number of times I’ve encountered unfriendly or downright aggressive dogs on pathways and walking trails.

Now I get to cope with the people who let their dogs run loose in the street, which I seriously don’t understand. Even if you don’t care about being a good neighbor in this respect, wouldn’t you worry about the dog getting hit by a car?

Welllllll…. The -law- says: You don’t have to stop when there are 3 or more lanes of traffic and you’re going in the opposite direction.

Washington State Patrol says:

It is your -responsibility- to know when you can and cannot pass a school bus.

If I know the law and don’t -expect- to have to stop but the guy in front of me does not know the law and does stop suddenly then you might run into conflict, and potentially rear-ending accidents. (yeah yeah, don’t go off on “but you shouldn’t be following so close” or “there’s a bus you should be looking out anyway” yadda). Accidents happen.

Should folks slow down in general on 35th? Yes. Should they be watching out for school buses and kids? Yes.

Should they stop when going in the opposite direction in a 3 or more lane roadway just because it’s a good idea? No, because the law says that traffic doesn’t stop.

These days buses have a wire bar across the front that flips out to keep kids from crossing in front of the bus.

If the kids run cross the street mid-block after the bus has moved on then they are jaywalking and chances are traffic has already started moving because the bus is gone.

It’s also the kids’ responsibility to know when and where it is safe or not safe to cross the street.

And parents, teachers and bus drivers should be reminding the kids to look both ways, only cross at intersections, make sure the drivers see you… shoulda coulda woulda.

I don’t think the OP was a rant, it was a plea for all drivers to take responsibility for knowing the rules of the road.

Please make sure you’re safely parked before getting out of your vehicle to measure the width of the median/dividing line/barrier . . . etc. etc. etc.

Once you have verified that you may legally do so, return to your vehicle, start the engine, and proceed to pass.

boy, if you ever want to duplicate the head-spinning scene from ‘The Exorcist’, try researching something like this in state law …

to boil it down, you always have to stop for a school bus with the STOP sign deployed and red light(s) flashing if you are approaching from the rear until such time as the bus starts moving or the sign/alarm are deactivated.

If you are approaching from the opposite direction, you are required to stop UNLESS:

– the highway/street is ‘divided into separate roadways’ (‘by leaving an intervening space or by a physical barrier or clearly indicated dividing section or by a median island not less than 18 inches wide formed either by solid yellow pavement markings or by a yellow crosshatching between two solid yellow lines so installed as to control vehicular traffic’), or

– there are more than 3 ‘marked traffic lanes’.

I expected to find a brochure on this topic on the SPD or WSP or WA Traffic Safety Commission websites but no luck. The only resource I found was the Dept. of Licensing Drivers Guide:

“You must stop for a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing whether it is on your side of the road, the opposite side of the road or at an intersection you are approaching. You are not required to stop for a school bus with red lights flashing when the stopped

school bus is traveling in the opposite direction and the roadway:

– has three or more marked traffic lanes,

– is separated by a median, or

– is separated by a physical barrier.

After the school bus red lights have stopped flashing, watch for children along the side of the road and do not proceed until they have completely left the roadway.”

I don’t think you are required to stop on Fauntleroy as there is a center turn lane (I assume this is an ‘intervening space’ but maybe not) dividing the two traffic lanes or on 35th, which has 4 lanes but no center separator.

Of course, you would be required to stop if a student appears to be crossing the street. Not sure what the DOL manual means by ‘intersection you are approaching’; does this mean cross streets?

It probably would not be illegal if you slowed down considerably or stopped on Fauntleroy anyway just to be safe, esp. if you did so in a way that gives following drivers fair warning rather than just jamming on the brakes for no apparent reason, causing the driver behind you to spill their hot coffee and drop their cell phone.

Please note that I am not an attorney and this should not be construed as legal advice or even as a correct interpretation of state laws that have been cobbled together and amended over decades without any coherent effort to conform them. After this, I’m pretty sure I won’t drive anywhere if it is near school start or stop times.

I noted Job’s comment above regarding ABC, which takes me slightly off subject: What’s up with them? ABC News, talking about voter anger, showed a clip of Sarah Palin talking on Fox News? WTF? ABC is sourcing opinion from FOX? I don’t usually watch television news because it is poorly done and much too right wing but it has gotten much much worse than I’ve ever seen it.
