I appreciate the comment Mike :) but seriously… do you think there is something that could be built/made… somehow, that could help her ease the burden of the way she has to store/move everything?

    .

I’d be happy to talk to her about whether she’d be open to having something other than a shopping cart (I’d be surprised if she said “NO”). I’d also be more than happy to put my ‘time where my mouth ‘ is to make something happen.

    .

She’s a really great person. I often see her knitting (she tells me it’s ‘for the orphans’ :) ) or doing small sewing jobs, mending her umbrellas and or clothes.

    .

Imelda: I think you’d find she’d be very happy to chat with you :)

phoenix :) Her name is Mary Teresa. I actually posted a note similar to yours about a year ago, asking if anyone knew anything about her and got a reply somewhere along the lines of “if you really want to know, why don’t you just ask her” :/

    .

I’ve been talking with her over the past several months, wave ‘Hello’ to each other several times a day… sometimes we share a Hug … because ‘everybody’ needs a hug, including me!

    .

She will graciously accept a few dollars if you have it to offer but has never asked me for anything. Last week I noticed she was sitting in her sock feet (shoes off) a couple of days in a row and when I asked what was happening, she replied that her feet were very swollen and her shoes were worn through the bottom. On the weekend, I went to Value Village and bought her a couple of pairs of shoes. She was very thankful and I’m happy to see she’s wearing them.

    .

It pains my heart to see her pushing her ever growing load on that cart. I’ve actually been wondering if I (we) could find a better solution for her. Of course… the Real Solution would be for her to have a ‘Home’ to go to… but realistically, I’d like to find her a better cart <3

phoenix, Kudos to you and your boys for your concern of this woman. I’m especially impressed with how one (or both?) of them have taken some initiative in showing concern for, and wanting to help her.

I think and offer of food or, even though McDonalds may not be the best choice for food, a gift card from there, are great ideas.

If you are uncomfortable offering her cash directly, maybe slip some into a simple, attractive card that expresses simple, good wishes, either already printed on the card, and/or hand written by you and/or your boys, or maybe in a nice, hand written note.

One of the simplest, and kindest things anyone can do is “Just Say Hello“.

Here is the website, and Facebook Page of a great guy that has been helping Homeless folks for several years now. You and your boys might like to peruse some of the stories of the Homeless that have benefitted from Rex’s kindness:

She often sleeps under the Lafayette school front entry overhang, or on the porch of St. John’s.

I have also seen her over the past several months. Sitting on the steps at St Johns Church, and at Hiawatha. We just don’t normally see this in West Seattle, she does appear to have a bunch of stuff. She has never asked anything from us, but we say hello, and smile as we walk past. I have been curious of where she sleeps, but no one asks where I sleep, so wasn’t sure if its my business to ask.

Pale green loveseat – posted on Craig’s List for $40-OBO. For someone else from West Seattle it’s free!

It’s a great couch, but I need to get it out ASAP before carpet installation.

I could use Craigslist, but I’d rather check with my West Seattle Blog-pals first. Do you have an elliptical you want to sell? Needs to be in good condition and able to handle weights of up to 230 pounds. We don’t need a lot of bells and whistles – just a good, solid machine. We promise we’ll give it a good home and plenty of exercise! Thanks.

    on Mondays from 1:30-2:15, and

    on Wednesdays from 1:30-2:15.

Don’t count them out on price, they have a stellar Happy Hour that runs the entire evening! I’m pretty excited to see how this will pan out. I love going out to restaurants in Germany where tipping isn’t normal and you pay cash and round to the nearest Euro to avoid pocket change. It’s so refreshing and less stressful to deal with the math. I tend to tip generously now that my own salary has grown and it makes some of my strict 15% friends feel uncomfortable when we split bills. I think of it this way, I go to work and my employer pays my full salary. A waitress goes to work and should earn her full salary from her employer as well and not have to worry whether she gets generous customers or the stingy guy who argues automatic gratuity for parties over 10 off the bill.

    Hi everyone,

Traveling to London anytime soon? I had a trip planned last summer that was cancelled at the last minute. I had pre-purchased two Oyster Cards, loaded with 40 pounds worth of bus/train/underground fare on them. Sadly, I never got to use them, but would really like for someone to be able to!

If you buy them on the Oyster Card website, they’re $68.50 each, which includes the activation fee. I’m asking for face value of 40 pounds – that turns out to be about $120. So you’d be saving almost $20!

I’ve got an ad on craigslist, but haven’t gotten any bites yet. I’d love to sell them to someone from West Seattle if there is anyone out there who’s interested.

Answer here and we’ll figure out how to get in touch…

    Cheers!

We have used Sean Tillman of Tillman Construction. He is a licensed and bonded contractor based in Seattle. It is just him, except for the occasional time he subs out part of a project. He does big things and small things, does top quality work, and is a joy to work with. Once people work with him he is their forever go-to guy. He slowly but steadily did our complete inside remodel, but when we needed an emergency railing after my husband’s stroke he was right there. And right now he is working on making a custom baby gate thing following my panicked call to him after our high energy new puppy began swallowing inedible objects and must now be kept out of parts of the house. He recently did some painting for a friend of mine putting her house up for sale. I hear nightmare stories sometimes about working with contractors and others in the home building and repair trades and I feel so blessed that I have found Sean. He lives in SeaTac, so almost West Seattle. His number is 253-229-5368.

Seems like it’s 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. We had Comcast, it would sputter and spit and slow down at certain times of day. We switched to Clink because we wanted a real land line in case of emergencies, and Comcast only does VOIP. So far, we’ve sputters and spits and slowdowns. I had issues accessing my online account and had a few hoops to jump through to get there, but that’s it so far.

    In reply to: Tilden School

Tilden School? One of my favorite topics! Truly one of the best kept secrets in West Seattle, hands down. 2 of 3 of my children attended through 5th grade, the 3rd, we moved into a “gifted program” in a well-respected eastside district. Big mistake – I truly believe she would have been much better off both socially and academically, flourishing in Tilden’s small nurtering environment, where there is structure, respect, accountability, proper-and-kind discipline, and, most importantly MUCH love. Every child is treasured for their strengths and gets individual help for areas they need to improve. The teachers are truly amazing, each with their own style and obvious love of teaching. The academics are very strong, a solid, well-rounded education is what your child will leave with, ready to tackle middle school head-on. Not only will they be academically ready to move on but they will also leave with a good respect for others. Many life lessons are learned and discussed on the Tilden playground. Kids will learn how to be respectful, how to stand up for themselves, how to take care of others and best of all – how to be a positive member in a bigger group – very important in life! Oh, and did I mention that the kids also have lots of fun while learning? One need only mention Virgil and his science class, Super E, Jan’s 4th grade play, PE, the first grade butterfly release or Teddy Bear Picnic, the 5th grade play or Islandwood, Art History (with field trips!), Caroline’s Spanish games or Freeze Dancing and Letterland in Kindergarten to hear shouts of “Oh, I love that!” from students. The playground itself is not an issue for the kids, the games they devise with simple equipment are amazing. Use of Dakota Place Park is nice for those seeking a patch of grass to play on and its upcoming expansion will only enhance this space more for those that go across – many choose the blacktop for endless rounds of four-square. Children are bored only if they “choose” to be. Invitations from others are many and often and even the most stubborn “bored” child will give in to repeated invitations from classmates to join games. The community itself is amazing, the kindest people you will ever know. There are many friendships that develop in the hallway, always a smiling face or a friendly hello. The opportunities for community involvement, from the Halloween Carnival to Field Day, concerts to curriculum night will be highlights not only in your child’s life but yours too! Some of my closest friends were gained in that building, and I treasure them. I could go on forever of course, but with all that said, the proof is in the pudding. My kids have flourished and are well rounded, happy and confident. They can tackle anything and a big part of that, I know, is because I chose to send them to Tilden. I think if you ask around and seek out Tilden families you will find many stories like this. If you have an opportunity to send your child here, I would say DO IT! You won’t be sorry, my oldest will be graduating from West Point this spring and it was Tilden that gave her the foundation to be able to get to where she is today!

Clearly both options are not ideal but I’ve had no reason to call Century Link in two years b/c I haven’t had any problems. Guess I’ve been lucky or am not very picky. I also think I’ve been use fiber this whole time, not DSL. I dunno. Century Link is the lesser of two evils for me, sorry to hear their customer service is bad.

CMP: I’m paying maybe $70 for speeds 10x faster than your dsl through Comcast. Is it worth while switching to Clink????? I know of one office downtown that switched to them, then switched back a month later because service was so bad. I know another business in the junction that moved away from clink because customer service was so bad, the woman in charge of straightening out the mess was literally in tears trying to deal with getting a response from Clink.

Comcast support is not good but Clink is much much worse.

skeets…when you retire…hmmm…I’m 68, and my ONLY family is here…daughter, hubby, and grandchild. So, up and moving to where I know no one, across the state, where the healthcare (yes, I need that on a regular basis w/transplant)may not be what I need to be receiving, makes for a conundrum. Yes, I work part time, but am getting ready to retire by years end, and will totally be on a fixed income. And there are many more just like me. This city is slowly getting rid of us, and will only be a city of the well-to-do. I’m not sure what the answer is. We have a city gov’t. that only forms “Task forces”…they have a habit of talking things to death (affordable housing, for instance), while the prices go up and up and up, and nothing gets done. Seattle may be on the top lists of desirable places to live, but for who (whom?)?

Thanks Sue for clarifying. I clearly was thinking rent control not rent stabilization. I think a cap on how much rents can go up per year and ample notice requirements would be great here.

Datamuse, I have so many opinions on the density = affordability argument. Obviously more supply helps keep prices down or at least more stabilized and I think soon we might have an over supply which will further help even things out (for a while). But I think what we are struggling with now is just crazy demand from an insane amount of people moving here, and in the face of this high demand, from people with relatively high incomes, i am not sure any kind of affordable housing program can keep pace. Sorry, I am in a pretty depressed place about it.

I had mine replaced in 2001 not long after I purchased my first house; I was entirely ignorant, a sheep to the slaughter, if you will.

I had an absolutely dreadful consultation with a belligerent plumber from Southwest (never never never again!!) and then called O’Neil. They sent the nicest guy out who not only replaced my water heater at half the cost of what Southwest quoted, but explained what he was doing as he went. While he was there I asked him to replace the shower head with one I bought. He did it but wasn’t happy with the connector piece and called me a couple of days later and said he found what he wanted at McClendon’s and came over and replaced it on his own time and at no cost.

Southwest quoted me in the vicinity of $1300 to replace it, O’Neil was $700ish. I was told by others afterward that if I had gone with an independent plumber it likely would have been much cheaper, but I felt like I got my money’s worth in customer service and peace of mind.

They also saved me a few years later when my hose bibb snapped off the day after Thanksgiving, and were there within 15 minutes to make sure I was able to turn the water off at the street – and I was thoroughly relieved to find that they didn’t consider that day a holiday therefore charged at the regular rate.

    Schwaggy,

Thanks very much for your comment and the response which give us someone to contact directly.

My concern is slightly different than yours; it doesn’t involve obstructing traffic from Fauntleroy but inadequate time for eastbound traffic on Oregon to move through the light. I’m not sure when the timing of the lights was changed, but is was relatively recent. Anyone observing the intersection at the time of day they report will notice a back up on Oregon.

In any case, I will contact Mr. Burns.

there are lies, and there are lies…a famous politician just said this recently “If every politician were held to everything they said in a political campaign, obviously that would be a topic of long discussion,” McCain said.”

I guess we need to listen wisely…
