addParticipantI need to get back into making my own, but I can never seem to get the consistency right – it’s either too thick or too juice-like. That’s why I usually go to Jamba Juice. Gotta love that curbside service!
Glad to hear that Hotwire’s smoothies are good – I noticed the sign the other day so now will certainly check it out!
PS, WS Mom – I’m guessing ff yoplait is Fat Free Yoplait yogurt, I’m assuming the custard-style (which is my favorite).

WSMomParticipantHey dood:
What kind of soy powder do you recommend? and what is ff yoplait?
AnonymousInactiveNR, the language training is extremely important. The lack of linguists in Iraq has created huge problems. How do you propose we convince people we’re trying to help, explain to families why we’re searching their homes, interrogate prisoners, work together at all. Are we supposed to draw stick figures in the sand? Handing out candy only goes so far. Maybe Obama would like us to be better prepared for world events.

inactiveMemberI make ’em at home most of the time. Can top off my drink right out of my own little blender. :) Favorite is vanilla ff yoplait, fresh cantalope, juice of a 1/4 of a lime, tbsp of orange blossom honey and soy powder. Yes…it HAS to be orange blossom honey or it doesn’t sing.
But, ya’ know the other evening when it was so hot, I went to Bubbles for the first time. I know. I know! It’s not a smoothie and I rarely go for this type of drink…but I was a bubble tea virgin and I was there…so I had the green coconut blended – no candie crap (who drinks candy? I don’t understand that) But, they were so good. OMG. Incredibly artificial – I know. I know! BUT. So so refreshing.

WSMomParticipantI love WS Thriftway. You have to try their prepared pork loin stuffed with spinach, walnuts and feta cheese from the meat department. Pop in the oven for 25 minutes and dinner is ready. Kinda gourmet! So yummy and very inexpensive. Also, they actually listened when I requested they carry Smith Brothers Milk. One more thing, you have to try “Exclusivo Wild Porcini Sauce” which sold for like $3.00 a can in the spaghetti sauce section. The best canned (or bottled) spaghetti sauce I’ve ever tried. I add it to garlic and onion saute’d in olive oil, throw it on some noodles and say “dinners ready” on busy sports nights.

charlabobParticipantSuits, Thanks, I’ll look up the two folks you mentioned–I’m familiar with Sibelius but not as much with Strickland.
I have a problem with Webb — he claims to be a Reagan Republican and propagates the same information that Reagan did. As a veteran of the 70’s, I can say with conviction that we did NOT hate the military or the troops (though we made some huge mistakes in implementation and PR). His “opposition” to what he claims the Democratic party became is based on false information — so, despite my huge respect for what he’s doing now, for the military and for the country, I’m not convinced he’s the best choice for VP.
Personally, I wish there was a strong labor leader or other working class figure we could nominate to compensate for the false allegations of elitism that has spawned working class hostility. I never thought “What’s the Matter with Kansas,” would spill over into Democratic Primary rhetoric.

JoBParticipantWalfredo…
it was unfortunate that she used Kennedy as an example of a widely popular candidate who had not cinched his party’s nomination by June …. because his bid was ended by assassination and people like you read a subtext that wasn’t there…
So which presidential candidate should she have referenced? how many similar candidates in recent history did she have to use as an example? And what example could she possibly have used without the inference of implied subtext?
One has to ask since it is impossible for her to open her mouth without inferences of implied subtext abounding.
The only assassination subtext that existed is the one that political pundits made up.
I don’t care if you state that you believe that was her intention… you are entitled to your opinion… but state that it is your opinion and you support it by these assumptions… don’t just call her a liar and assume her intentions.
And don’t leap to the conclusion that it must be so because “everybody” says it’s so.
that’s how we ended up in Iraq.. or have you forgotten that?
As for the rest of that string of quotes… if you were making a point other than you think Bill Clinton is full of s..t.. i didn’t see it.
When it comes to Obama.. the only words that you think should be attributed to him are his own…
yet.. you refer to the Clintons as though they are interchangeable. I will grant they are married. I will grant they are political partners. But interchangeable? She’s his wife.. so she is entirely responsible for everything he does or says.. and she will do exactly what he has done?
That’s kind of sexist isn’t it?
If we use that standard… Senator Obama should be a reflection of his wife’s unfortunate comments.. possibly he is immune because of his sex?
Your anti-Clinton… anti both Clintons… hysteria is getting the better of you.. and proving my point that this is more anti any Clinton than pro Obama for many of you.
As for the comparisons you are trying to make between Bill Clinton’s campaign and his use of statistics as an argument and Senator Obama’s campaign and it’s use of statistics.. i would have to go back and look closely before giving a reply that was anything more than an opinion… and i don’t think it’s worthwhile to take the time to do that.
What i will tell you.. and i am being quite clear that this is my personal opinion and my personal reflections on what i remember… is that i see similarities between the campaigns that Bill Clinton and Senator Obama both waged… both have been based largely on cults of personality and used the campaign’s momentum as a selling point.. tho if i remember accurately, Bill’s campaign actually gained momentum as the primaries went on….
But, I don’t think that comparison bodes too well for Senator Obama’s chances of being effective as a President.
Bill Clinton was obviously too inexperienced to handle the opposition he faced as President… and i think there are some real parallels that bear looking at with Senator Obama.
Leadership isn’t just about being charismatic and having an uncanny ability to speak to people. It takes experience and political knowhow to get things done in Washington.. even if you are lucky enough to have a congress whose political majority matches your own… which Bill Clinton definately wasn’t…
John Kennedy had Johnson to work Congress and Bobby to push his agenda along.
Who will do that for Obama?
Bill Richardson is the most likely candidate to be his VP.. and he doesn’t have that kind of political savvy. And sadly, we can’t count on Ted right now. Kerry has the savvy but not the clout. Pelosi thinks she has clout but her record doesn’t say much for what she can accomplish against opposition.
My point is that even if we manage a solid democratic majority along with a democratic president.. we will still have a largely hostile press to deal with… and that means tremendous opposition.
You obviously think Obama is up to that. I can’t see what evidence that assumption is based on… but you are entitled to your opinion… as I am to mine
You are also entitled to your opinion about the Clintons… as long as you recognize that many of the things you present as fact are no more than opinion.. no matter how many blogs they show up on.
It would be nice if you were so generous as to entitle me to my opinions as well… you may have noticed they differ from yours.

hopeyParticipantNewResident, I’m another Thriftway shopper. In my opinion, “Thriftway” is a complete misnomer — it’s more upscale than Safeway but less so than Met Market. I buy all my deli items there because they carry Boar’s Head brand meats. And their cheese selection is so good as to be overwhelming!

I just got back from Thriftway and I have to say, I think I found myself a new grocery store!! I really liked it.
I’m kinda weird when it comes to steak, so I will probably continue to get steaks at Met Market. Other than that, I really enjoyed the entire store! I, obviously, love that they sell cigars there as well!

seattlesueMemberCaduceus,
Oh to be young and naive again.
I cannot help but to agree whole heartedly with the posts debunking your truly ignorant ideas.
Where to begin…
Your idea that the standards and the format for the WASL and high school requirements need to be changed because they are not difficult for YOU, is as one previous member stated “elitist”. Good for you for passing with flying colors and for finding ways to expand your high school education to suit your academic goals. Just because this test is a piece of cake for you, does not mean that it is easy for everyone or that we need to change our standards for high school graduation. It SHOULD be easy for someone, like yourself, who obviously qualified for advanced programs such as Running Start and AP classes.
Please do not speak for the rest of your peers…as another post commented standardized testing is clearly not an effective or appropriate way to assess all students and act purely as a means of meeting the requirements of government mandates such as NCLB. As for changing it…only time and new administration will tell.
And dear, dear, child, please do not even open up the ESL can of worms unless you are ready to truly back up your arguments with research and EXPERIENCE. As a 20 year ESL teaching veteran and former teacher in the LA Unified School District, I find it sad that the prejudices and lack of understanding of ESL programs still run deep. Please feel free to comment when you have truly researched teaching methodologies and best practices and THEN we will discuss this issue.
It is wonderful that you aspire to continue on with your university studies, I hope that your college degree will help you to become quite prosperous in the future. But just remember, kindness, understanding, and global perspective do not come with a diploma. These are only things you can learn with time and world experience. Please go out and really experience and explore these issues in our world before you decide to make ignorant statements. It saddens me to think today’s youth is this closed minded. I had thought we had come some far…

JoBParticipantbeachdrivegirl…
i did take a look at both Washington and Oregon.. Did you?
They had strikingly similar numbers when you compare the results of the primary elections. they also had strikingly similar demographics when you compare where the individual candidates did well… and didn’t… and among which groups of people the individual candidates did well.. and didn’t.
the numbers all across the board were close to identical.. and yet several months apart.
if Obama’s message was such a strong one.. or conversely… Clinton’s message such a weak one.. you would expect the numbers in two strikingly similar states to improve in the later primary. they didn’t.
I made no false comments about those primaries.
Yes, Obama could be a viable candidate without expressing a strong work ethic in the senate… without expressing a real effort to become educated before assuming office and by not having a strong record on issues that affect the poor, women and children.
In fact, he could become president.
We have an excellent example of just that in office now.. except we would have to substitute Bush’s record as a governor (or his record as President in his first term.. that man enjoyed a lot of vacation) for Obama’s record as a Senator.
Obama’s being a candidate does not guarantee any of the qualities i enumerated… and i made no false statements about his record or Hillary’s.
while we are at it.. we can revisit the first time you stated that i was telling false tales.
I didn’t lie about the Obama campaign in Michigan… tho you think i did.
I personally know about that one because I received more than one email asking me to help with that campaign and one congratulating all of us on it’s success from the organizers of that campaign.
No, the emails did not come from the official Obama campaign.. but that is where they got my their email list… so i don’t think it is a stretch to call that one part of the Obama campaign.
I haven’t told any falsehoods about Obama. I may have said things you don’t want to hear.. but that alone doesn’t make them false.
You should be more careful about saying that anyone makes false statements… had you read my email carefully instead of just reacted, you would have realized i said nothing i couldn’t back with verifiable sources..
So.. let’s look at those presidential qualities you enumerated… assuming Hilalry didn’t have them.
honesty… you assume Clinton is dishonest… because that is what you have heard from the nightly news for years.. and believe me.. you have heard every verbal misstep and exaggeration she has made. You still do.
get prepared to listen to Obamas if he is our candidate.. because he has a string of them.. and you will hear them often.
He is a politician… and politician’s exaggerate and misspeak to make themselves look better.
They all do. Obama is no exception. And some of his can be proven with his own words.. the differences between what he has said in his books and what he says has always been true now make for some real whoppers… starting with the idea that he has always been categorically opposed to the war in Iraq and would never have voted to authorize it.
Read his books if you don’t believe me. He is in print under his own name stating his uncertainty about what he would have done had he been in that position.
and that’s just a start….
Simply labeling Hillary a liar and then finding a way to interpret her remarks as lies doesn’t make it so…
You are awfully free with that label right now. I don’t think you will be so free with it when the discrepancies in Obama’s story become nightly news fodder.
forward looking.. Hillary tried to get a universal health care system in place 15 years ago. I would call that pretty forward looking. And that’s just one example of her forward thinking. She hasn’t just talked about forward thinking, she has actually worked at getting forward thinking legislation passed.
competent.. Hillary has been a very effective politician since her early twenties. She is an incredibly competent lawyer… so much so that she was singled out for an award. She was a competent first lady as both a governor’s wife and as the president’s wife. She has been an incredibly competent senator. She has been a competent fund raiser and campaigner for many of the democrats currently in office… including Obama. She is a competent mother.. she has raised a fine young woman in pretty difficult circumstances. Does that cover competent?
inspiring.. Hillary is incredibly inspiring to me. She is a woman who has worked very hard against huge odds and has done good work… without ever losing sight of why she chose to become involved in politics in the first place. She has been the most reviled woman in our time and still stands up for what she believes in. She has had a working partnership with her husband for nearly 40 years… imperfect though it may be.. and she is still married to a man who supports her goals in life. I’d say that is all pretty inspiring.
So it seems she has all the qualities you would look for in a president.. imagine that:)
Call Hillary a liar if you like.. but that doesn’t make everything she says a lie.
Call me a liar if you like.. but that doesn’t make what i say a lie either. I am very careful about the line separating opinion and verifiable fact.
I have tried to be very patient because i know that you don’t have the benefit of the years of political and historical study that i have and your experience is limited to recent history that has been distorted by the media…
but it is not ok to accuse me of falsehoods on the basis of opinions.. no matter how much you believe the person who voices those opinions.

miwsParticipantI’m another huge fan of Thriftway.
.
I live nearby, and that’s important as I don’t have a car. I actually don’t like shopping, but this store is so comfortable, it feels like home.
.
It’s classy in a way, but mostly feels down to earth to me. And the staff there are great. They feel like your neighbors, and don’t put on some phony front.
.
As far as the original Thriftway, I normally don’t like change, but that poor old place had leaks in the roof, and it was so small by today’s or even ten years ago standards when they rebuilt, they probably wouldn’t have survived. And from day one, I’ve been impressed with the rebuild.

JiggersMemberI bought two pairs of jeans from Costco for $12.99 ea, but the hem job on those pants cost me $10.00 ea at the alterations next to Yummie’s crappy Teriyaki. Ridiculous….:(
AnonymousInactiveBdg – I’m confused by the link you shared. The story of the couple who bought a house with the understanding that after small mortgage payments, for a time, they were going to have huge balloon payments to make.
Did they not read their contract? I would think if you didn’t want to read ALL the tiny, fine print, you would at least read what your payment schedule looked like and make sure you could handle it.
I don’t understand why this couple’s predicament (and my Dad’s friend who got the same kind of loan) is the Government’s fault or the taxpayer’s fault (my fault). Why should my taxes go up because these people (and thousands like them) chose not to read their mortgage contract? Or, if they did read it, chose to ignore it?
I should not have to pay an increase in taxes because people made the conscious choice to enter into an agreement they could keep.
Sorry to ramble, but this is a huge peeve of mine!! It is absolutely ridiculous that everyone else should have to pay to bail people out that are not meeting the terms of a contract THEY signed!!!
May 28, 2008 at 11:46 pm #625233In reply to: WASL/School Standards
gambaruParticipantThank you, WSpeeps and Hopey.
Caduceus- your elitist attitude and lack of understanding for those less fortunate than you are concerns me. By less fortunate, I am not necessarily referring to your parents’ income either.
Some of my most brilliant students suffer from severe learning disabilities and standardized testing are simply the wrong way to assess their skills. Many times, my other students in class don’t even understand why “certain” students get certain privileges like a difference in assignment requirements or more use on the computers to type. I am constantly hearing “That’s not fair.” Little do they know the difficulties those other students face and must accommodate for. It would be more unfair for me to treat all my students as though they are on equal footing because they certainly are not. So as a student, you see “lower expectations” for your fellow students. As a teacher I ask, “Do they have an IEP? Are they ESL?”– That is why WSpeeps brought the conversation back to ESL. ESL IS relevant to what you are talking about. Making the standardized tests more difficult for students will not solve anything for the students who are struggling to pass them. It is not always a matter of them taking it seriously or not.
Also, speaking of your response to WSpeeps, who are you to dictate where the conversation goes, and what people can or cannot talk about on a thread? News flash kiddo, no college in the world will teach to the compassion or integrity your previous post lacked.
As a teacher, my suggestion for you would be to print off this thread and show it to a teacher you can have a heart to heart conversation with. Perhaps giving you an insider perspective about your particular school will give you a more in-depth understanding of what WSpeeps was referring to and why he/she thought your comments were irresponsible.

MargLMemberI just filled out the estimate request form on their (Out on a Limb) website and she stopped by unexpectedly this afternoon :-) We’re waiting for an email of the bid but it seemed very reasonably priced.
AnonymousInactiveI sometimes wonder if Obama supporters ever stop and think about what he is proposing and what examples he is providing to back up his promises.
I think his supporters are sometimes blinded by what he is promising, but not looking into the details and thinking about the effects.
I envy that absolute support of your candidate, but it can be extremely dangerous.
