I was just at the West Seattle Thriftway and they’re really spiffing the place up.

All of the checkout counters are being tarted up and changed a bit. New Credit/Debit card readers and the counter ends have new display areas.

The old magazine aisle is in the midst of a makeover with a much higher-end look.

So far looks good. Now if I could just stop seeing them wearing jeans on “game days”.

jeans on game days? yes, heaven forbid they should be comfortable at work. you must work at Safeco- where casual Fridays have never been allowed.

if WS T-way isn’t classy enough for ya, maybe you should have your butler do the shopping next time.

Take a chill pill there JenV, this wasn’t a rant.

I like what they’re doing to the store and would have continued to shop there even if they weren’t doing the updating. I was merely letting everyone know about the improvements to our local grocery store.

The fact I didn’t like to see ratty-ass jeans and T-shirts on the employees was because it didn’t look professional. Especially since they aren’t marketing themselves as “Grocery Outlet”.

    Don’t be such a hater…

maybe we can split a chill pill? My post came out twice as serious sounding as it should have. My apologies. Geez. You think T-way needs classin’ up, you should head over to the Admiral Safeway.

the thing is, I remember what the Tway was like before they burned it down and re-built it. It’s more than classed up enough pour moi.

JenV absolutely right about Admiral Safeway…is that not the scuzziest safeway anywhere? I find myself driving over and dealing with the terrible parking at the 42nd safeway, just because it’s so much nicer

JenV, I don’t need a chill pill thank you very much.

Nowhere in my OP did I say that Thriftway “needs classin’ up”, that was entirely your misreading of the post.

And from there you jumped me with both barrels.

I heard that they are going to close down the Admiral Safeway for 2 years for renovations.

All I can think about, if they do, is the terrible crowds at the already terribly crowded Jackson Square Safeway!!!!

So, btw, where is this Thriftway? Is it just like a grocery store or more like a Walgreens/Rite Aid?

New Resident, the Thriftway is at the intersection of Morgan/California/Fauntleroy – same corner as the Tully’s. And it’s a full supermarket. It’s my favorite place to shop for groceries in WS. And I’ve never once noticed what the staff were wearing there. :)

NR, it just kitty corner from the beverage place pub we were at a couple weeks ago. Morgan Junction. And yes it’s a regular grocery store.

I’ll chime in that the folks at the WS T-way are very generous to the community as well – always donating good stuff to schools/other charities and other nice deeds such as the fundraiser barbecues for breast cancer, etc.

I love that place too! Especially the great cheese samples! :)

That’s awesome! Thank you for the recommendation! I plan on stopping by today and checking it out! I’ll say that I was recommended from the blog, people love to hear that!

Do they have wine and beer?

Yes – a great wine section, actually – with a helpful wine expert who’s usually always there. Lots of different beers, too. (Beer and wine are at opposite ends of the store.)

I’m another huge fan of Thriftway.

    .

I live nearby, and that’s important as I don’t have a car. I actually don’t like shopping, but this store is so comfortable, it feels like home.

    .

It’s classy in a way, but mostly feels down to earth to me. And the staff there are great. They feel like your neighbors, and don’t put on some phony front.

    .

As far as the original Thriftway, I normally don’t like change, but that poor old place had leaks in the roof, and it was so small by today’s or even ten years ago standards when they rebuilt, they probably wouldn’t have survived. And from day one, I’ve been impressed with the rebuild.

why would you knock on the grocery outlet! dont you know it the “up and coming” you can get the same stuff there that you can get at safeway for half the price! although you would have to eat it within the week, im always down for a deal, although im in love with the metropolitan and thriftway deli’s and coffee!! anyways i was on queen ann today at the safeway and the deli people dont wear gloves and they had weird dried legions all over there hands, like open wounds with dry flakes falling on the food, i almost threw up! anyways im sure no one cares but it has been bothering me all day. and i know i should have said something….

changingtimes – That is sooo disgusting! If I was witness to that, it would bother me all day too!

I just got back from Thriftway and I have to say, I think I found myself a new grocery store!! I really liked it.

I’m kinda weird when it comes to steak, so I will probably continue to get steaks at Met Market. Other than that, I really enjoyed the entire store! I, obviously, love that they sell cigars there as well!

NewResident, I’m another Thriftway shopper. In my opinion, “Thriftway” is a complete misnomer — it’s more upscale than Safeway but less so than Met Market. I buy all my deli items there because they carry Boar’s Head brand meats. And their cheese selection is so good as to be overwhelming!

I love WS Thriftway. You have to try their prepared pork loin stuffed with spinach, walnuts and feta cheese from the meat department. Pop in the oven for 25 minutes and dinner is ready. Kinda gourmet! So yummy and very inexpensive. Also, they actually listened when I requested they carry Smith Brothers Milk. One more thing, you have to try “Exclusivo Wild Porcini Sauce” which sold for like $3.00 a can in the spaghetti sauce section. The best canned (or bottled) spaghetti sauce I’ve ever tried. I add it to garlic and onion saute’d in olive oil, throw it on some noodles and say “dinners ready” on busy sports nights.

I love thriftway.. I only wish I were further south in order to frequent it more often. I find myself walking past admiral safeway to shop at met market.

I guess I’m one of the few that shops at Admiral Safeway (although it sure does seem packed to me at times – hmmm). Actually, I live across the street from Adm. Safeway, so there’s a reason to go there for certain things…shop the sales, etc. And…I live about 1/2 block form Met Mkt…..so I can take advantage of that , too…..and then….I live about 1 1/2 blocks from PCC…love to shop there for bulk items…rice, quinoa, organic steel cut oats, and the best cinnamon this side of…well, wherever the cinnamon comes from.

I do venture at times down to Thriftway when I feel like it…haven’t done that lately…may have to when I can drive again…

oh, and if any store needs “tartin’ up” it’s the Adm. Safeway. I have heard through the grapevine that they plan ( not in the immediate future) to tear down completely, and rebuild…with whatever else they want to rebuild with it. I know that they’re supposed to present something to the Adm. Neighborhood Assn’…does anyone know if they’ve done that yet?

Of all the safeways I semi-regularly visit the ranking is something like: SeaTac > Renton > Admiral > Junction > U-district. Anyone that thinks that Admiral is the worst should take a little field trip over to the U district, it’s a total time warp. Hopefully when Admiral safeway does their makeover they get the idea to restock the broccoli and spinach when they run out. The staff has always been great, not to mention that my friends and I are totally mystified by one checker in particular.

Metropolitan Market lures me in with the cheap high-quality produce and those coupon mailers, and before I know it I’m picking up all kinds of stuff. It’s also becoming one of my favorite places to eat lunch. The soup is to die for.

Pcc I really want to like because it’s so close to me, but I’m always put off by the prices, though I do enjoy walking past their cooking classroom. I’ve always liked the Thriftway since it’s kind of a step between Safeway and Metropolitan, and I’d probably go there more if it were closer to me.

Hi all, WRT Admiral Safeway, it’s not grapevine, it’s indeed a plan that it will be torn down and the site will be redeveloped (having a big ground–level parking lot is apparently way passe’).

Nothing formal filed yet but the developers have been to the Admiral Neighborhood Association – this is our report from last month:

    https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=6789

including throwing out to the WSB world their question about “what do you want to see?”

ANA canceled its May meeting but we’ll be at the June meeting and guessing some kind of update will be available — TR

p.s. on the West Seattle Thriftway, which we too agree is an eternal improvement over the pre-fire version (will never forget coming back from a vacation in March 1997 and doing a triple-take to see the smoldering rubble), they have an excellent website – note the “new product request” feature:

If you want quality and don’t mind quantity, go to Cash and Carry downtown on 4th ave.

They sell “Packers cut” wet aged beef and pork. Cut your own steaks and freeze.

This is the same steak you will be served in most restaurants. Their Angus rib-eye is great and usually around 5.50 a pound.

Those who smoke or bar-b-que cannot get better price and quality on whole brisket or pork shoulder. As far as I know, Thriftway and the small Safeway’s don’t even carry any butchers cut size pork or beef suitable for smoking.

As far as Safeway goes, I go to roxbury since I can park and the aisles are wide enough for two carts to pass. I cannot shop at Jefferson square since I am neither a midget nor on Prozac.

Since the GF is a DBA, we compare prices every couple of years. Safeway is by far the cheapest for the specific items we buy regularly.

Thriftway has some specials occasionally and is right down the hill, but is almost as insane as Met market on regular grocery items.

Costco and Tony’s market fill in the spaces on specific items that are either unavailable from regular stores or deeply discounted in quantity.

The day I care what someone in any store is wearing will be the day I beg my family to shoot me and bury me in the back yard.
