AnonymousInactiveWell, BDG, you’re not running for President and trying to convince the entire country that you are the woman for the job.
McCain’s error with the terrorist groups does not indicate that he does not know what is going on in this country and others. He simply “misspoke”. He did exactly what Obama did and made a mistake in a speech.
I just don’t see why McCain is held to such a higher standard. I think everything McCain and Obama do from here on out will be picked through with a fine tooth comb, as it should be. I do not believe Obama will hold his own very well in this new arena.
I honestly don’t think a lot of you realize how intelligent McCain is. Have any of you read a book by McCain?
I still haven’t had one good reason explained for disarming or weakening our military. Why is that a good plan?
May 28, 2008 at 9:11 pm #618143
rs261MemberI’d love to find out more about the disarming our military claim…I think we can cut lots of fat off of the military budget…but dont get me wrong, I think military spending is awesome. Tons of medical and consumer techs have come from the military over the years…
May 28, 2008 at 9:14 pm #618144
AnonymousInactivers261 – I think if you type “Obama disarming military” into google, you will come up with some links that have the video of the speech. I cannot hear the speech, so can not debate about it. I would love a transcript if anyone knows where I can find it.

AnonymousInactiveNR, the video your talking about went viral a few months ago. The original is slightly longer than the excerpt conservative blogs are spreading. He is talking about cutting spending on military expenditures that are NOT related to keeping America safe. He has absolutely no plans to disarm our military. Here is a wiki link to our military spending compared to the rest of the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures
He is referring to eliminating what he feels is wasteful and/or overspending in order to equip and maintain better what is important to the military. He actually wants our military to be better prepared than it is.
May 28, 2008 at 10:36 pm #618146
AnonymousInactiveI could look into it, I know, but which “military expenditures” are we talking about here? Any specifics to this plan?
May 28, 2008 at 10:51 pm #618147
AnonymousInactiveThese are the quotes conservatives are upset about from the video.
“First, I’m the only major candidate who opposed this war from the beginning. And as president, I will end it.
Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending. I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems. I will not weaponize space. I will slow our development of future combat systems…and I will institute an independent Defense Priorities Board to ensure that the Quadrennial Defense Review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.
Third, I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal I will not develop new nuclear weapons…I will seek a global ban on the development of fissile material…and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off of hair-trigger alert…and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.â€

AnonymousInactiveThese are some of the things he wants to spend money on and I’ll look into it more later.
# Expand the Military: We have learned from Iraq that our military needs more men and women in uniform to reduce the strain on our active force. Obama will increase the size of ground forces, adding 65,000 soldiers to the Army and 27,000 Marines.
# New Capabilities: Obama will give our troops new equipment, armor, training, and skills like language training. He will also strengthen our civilian capacity, so that our civilian agencies have the critical skills and equipment they need to integrate their efforts with our military.
# Strengthen Guard and Reserve: Obama will restore the readiness of the National Guard and Reserves. He will permit them adequate time to train and rest between deployments, and provide the National Guard with the equipment they need for foreign and domestic emergencies. He will also give the Guard a seat at the table by making the Chief of the National Guard a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

AnonymousInactiveSo we will be the only country without nuclear weapons, while every other country is completely armed with everything and anything imaginable?
How is this a good idea?
Don’t Democrats always talk about how much everyone else hates Americans and, yet, we are thinking that weakening our military is a good idea?
It has been stated time and time again how dangerous pulling out of the this war would be. How is Obama going to end the war?
May 28, 2008 at 11:01 pm #618150
AnonymousInactiveIs the “language training” so that everyone can sit down with tea and discuss why they all hate us so much? I think that is a fantastic idea! I am certain that a good old conversation is the only thing we needed to do regarding the unrest in this world against us!!
Sorry for the sarcasm, it’s just ludicrous to me! That seems like the WORST thing that someone could be proposing to do right now!

A great statement, by Senator Obama, on why Americans will not let McCain into the Whitehouse. I also am qutie curious to see how Senator McCains aids liked being interveiwed by teh FBI???
May 28, 2008 at 11:42 pm #618152
AnonymousInactiveI sometimes wonder if Obama supporters ever stop and think about what he is proposing and what examples he is providing to back up his promises.
I think his supporters are sometimes blinded by what he is promising, but not looking into the details and thinking about the effects.
I envy that absolute support of your candidate, but it can be extremely dangerous.

AnonymousInactiveBdg – I’m confused by the link you shared. The story of the couple who bought a house with the understanding that after small mortgage payments, for a time, they were going to have huge balloon payments to make.
Did they not read their contract? I would think if you didn’t want to read ALL the tiny, fine print, you would at least read what your payment schedule looked like and make sure you could handle it.
I don’t understand why this couple’s predicament (and my Dad’s friend who got the same kind of loan) is the Government’s fault or the taxpayer’s fault (my fault). Why should my taxes go up because these people (and thousands like them) chose not to read their mortgage contract? Or, if they did read it, chose to ignore it?
I should not have to pay an increase in taxes because people made the conscious choice to enter into an agreement they could keep.
Sorry to ramble, but this is a huge peeve of mine!! It is absolutely ridiculous that everyone else should have to pay to bail people out that are not meeting the terms of a contract THEY signed!!!

AnonymousInactiveNR, the language training is extremely important. The lack of linguists in Iraq has created huge problems. How do you propose we convince people we’re trying to help, explain to families why we’re searching their homes, interrogate prisoners, work together at all. Are we supposed to draw stick figures in the sand? Handing out candy only goes so far. Maybe Obama would like us to be better prepared for world events.
May 29, 2008 at 3:04 am #618155
TrickParticipantShortage of Linguists were critical in Iraq. Not to have tea as you presume. Funny how we invade an arabic speaking country and have few linguists at our disposal.
Secondly, you misread the statement:
“I will not develop NEW nuclear weapons”
It doesn’t mean we won’t have them and be left with our pants down…my god.
Reducing nuclear weapons is a great goal, Why? because we taunt ours as much as anyone and why shouldn’t we lead by example. Reduction is good in order to pressure other countries, stable or not so we don’t have this panic gleeming over our heads.
It’s easy to be extreme in making statements, but before you do, read the words and don’t jump to conclusions so easily.
I like sarcasm, alot….but let’s not muddy the message so others take it hook-line and sinker like they do on the “F” Network.
May 29, 2008 at 3:42 am #618156
beachdrivegirlParticipantI just think our government should take responsibility for the lack of regulations they placed on mortgage providers. The housing market wold not be in the crisis it is in if it were not for the lack of regulations that Republicans (Bush Administration) failed to put in place. So yes, I do think it is our countries responsibilty to find a solution and if we do not our economy and housing market will fail, IMO. And no Republican ever did answer how did McCains aides like being interviewed by the FBI today??? Sure does look good during election season.

He says it much better than I could (with facts!).

rs261Memberfrom my take on the military spending
The WORLD (not just the US) without nuclear weapons is a good idea. Not only is it dangerous to everyone, the cost of maintaining them is high. Weaponizing space is also “bad”…but dont we need something to protect us from rogue asteroids? (kidding!)
Getting rid of the missle defense shield is also a good idea…although some cool tech like the High Energy lasers should still be researched. The whole missle shield thing has cost WAY to much money (100 billion + that could be spent on other tools/technologies, like teleportation, the military spends a measley 1-2 million on that a year, vs 9+ billion on the missle shield)
Cutting spending on new tech is not a good idea. As I said, many useful technologies from the military have made it into modern life, and DARPA to me is a huge source of potential commercial ventures later. (Autonimous cars, robots, all kinds of other stuff)
Language training would be nice. I do believe that we can talk our way out of most things. People, even your enemies, do not want a fight.
I’m all for having a modern military, and spectacular technology along with it. To me our priorities should be a focus on updating old tech, and making sure our soldiers have the best things available to them, to minimize casualties on both sides.
Now, as far as McCain misspeaking of present day events vs past events…he should be held in a stricter standard. If I did something today and “misspeak” about it, vs me telling a story about you 3 years ago and misspeak, which would you think is worse? Its a lot easier to forgive something that took place many years ago (like the whole Hillary landing under sniper fire, I didnt really care that she lied about it, I thought the worse part was using it as foreign relations experience.)
I think I’m all over the place in writing this…but well, I hate to proofread!

beachdrivegirlParticipantGreat News!! Obama is mapping out his election schedule following Tuesday’s closing primaries. We have alot of work to do to make up for the bad press Clinton has given him lately…

AnonymousInactiveANOTHER non-issue!!!!! A guest priest gives a sermon at his church bashing Hillary when Obama is not even there. His Cardinal (boss) has reprimanded him and forbidden him to speak about politics. Of what importance is this other than to say, how rude and un-professional (of the priest). Not like Obama runs the church.
May 31, 2008 at 5:17 am #618163
AnonymousInactiveI agree he doesn’t run the church. It just seems that there is a lot of controversy surrounding him.
I know that you will all blame the controversy on the media, but why is there more with him than anyone else?
I heard someone say that these types of issues will not come into play when people go to vote, but I completely disagree.
I don’t think a lot of Obama’s supporter’s realize just how much all of the controversy that follows him WILL come into play.
May 31, 2008 at 6:01 am #618164
AnonymousInactiveThere isn’t more on him and it is a media illusion. That’s not to say I blame the media. It’s just for at least a year, maybe two, it was a done deal that McCain and Clinton would be the nominees. Obama comes on the scene and shakes everything up. By virtue of what he has done, the attention is focused on every breath he takes.
I’m sure McCain is thrilled and Clinton is probably pissed he’s taking up the limelight. At 70 years old, McCain has way more dubious connections. Nobody cares right this minute. They will soon enough.
May 31, 2008 at 6:26 am #618165
AnonymousInactiveWith the exception of the extremely obvious, Hagee, who are McCain’s “dubious” connections?
I’m not being facetious, I really would like to know who is on that list.
