i must have my say here about the homeless guy in front of safeway, are you talking about the guy who sells the real change magazine? because those are the people who i really support. i think that they are really trying to do something with there lives not just bootlegging for beer and drugs, i make a real effort to give money to the real change folks. but anyways about the rainbow man.. im not sure im going to have to ask my husband for more details, rainbowman is supposed to be an old west seattle haunt, something that grandmas warned there kids about, the guy comes out and takes children who are found wandering around..i know, i know sounds funny, but i guess on some days of the year you can see little colored footprints all around the drainpipes in shmitz park. Ive heard about this myth from a few oldtime westseattlelites…and its fun to tell around a campfire this time of year…but just seeing if anyone had a better version of the story….

This isn’t as cool as Google Mars imo, but -at least for me- more relevant in a day-to-day context. If you’re looking for a quick n easy search solution for the West Seattle Blog and its associated forums, bookmark googlewest.home.comcast.net !

It’s simply a google search for the WSB, and if you’ve found yourself searching google with the “site:http:www.westseattleblog.com” string, or somesuch similar, this is just an interface for that search. It’s useful! Which is why it’s there. I use it almost daily when I have a westseattleish query, and I hope it works as well for others as it has for me! I understand that blog administration is on the case for a more effective site-integrated forums search function, but in the mean time, if you need a search, send it to Google West!

Jo, please at least try to have a sense of humor, would you? I don’t think Hillary actually stabs small animals. It was a joke, because you defended her appalling assassination comment in which she gave us insight into why she’s *really* staying in the race. You defend everything she does. Everything. It’s your right, but it’s also my right to find it irrational and annoying.

And just so you know, virtually all my charitable donations are to animal organizations.

Not odd but irritating. At Safeway in Jefferson Square, there’s always a homeless guy in front of the store asking for change. There’s a sign right there too saying no loitering.

Please read carefully. I did not say they did not *have* any empathy. I said they did not *display* any empathy, and that concerned me in a person who purportedly wants to help others. I did not say this person should not become a psychologist. I said the lack of empathy displayed *in this thread* was of concern to me. If they had said they intended to become a stockbroker, the empathy point would have been moot.

Also: speaking their mind, in this case, included deliberately “being a dick”. That is their own phrase for how they acted and the things they wrote. Perhaps the “jumping on” happened for a reason?

In internet terms, “deliberately being a dick” == trolling. Yes, very intelligent people troll on message boards. This young person is one of them, whether you want to admit it or not.

You may want to read a little more carefully before you jump in to defend someone who is quite clearly capable of self-defense, since they are so intelligent.

Concentrating on the issues and McCains stance on the issues is important and I have looked @ them. For instance I think his position on education stinks. He believes that No Child Left Behind is a good idea. He obviously does not know anyone that is actually involved in educating the next generation of children or care about our countries well being in 20,30, 40 years out. He also is in support of NAFTA and thinks it is vital to our countries success. HA what a joke. Just another example of how distant he is from our citizens and voters. And again as I stated before about him being wishy washy on global warming he has been to wishy washy on his opinion in regards to taxes he opposes tax cut then supports them then opposes them. Choose a position and stand by it. Because when you change your position that much that means you are only doing what you want people to see you do not doing what you want and what is know is right.

You are jumping to conclusions, hopey, in assuming this person has no empathy.

I do not think you should judge this person and criticize their future goals based on a couple postings on a blog.

It is extremely evident that this person is well educated and actually wants that education (which is more than I can say for a lot of other young people).

I just cannot believe that this young person is jumped on, assigned a lack of empathy, and talked down to when we should be praising this person for speaking their mind. Speaking it very eloquently, at that.

This person should speak their mind. They are obviously very intelligent. This person should see the world around them and come to their own conclusions.

For you to *assume* that this person has no empathy or, furthermore, and even more disturbing, challenge their chosen professional goal, is showing a lack of empathy.

Also womens rights goes further then the bill he just vetoed it goes on to pro-choice etc. Furthermore, why dont you trust Democrats? Why do you trust the Republicans so much? do you not see where Bush, representing the Republicans have got us???? As I said before I supported Bush in the past, but where we are today and how he has failed our country has made me run far far away from anyone who shares similar beliefs to him.

and , NR, I agree, there are a few white men out there who are amply qualified to be prez…I adore Joe Biden…but…the people didn’t pick him…and the others didn’t run…but..why say WHITE men…why not just say…there are other men AND women that are better qualified in your opinion…why do they have to be white men only? just a question…not starting an argument :).

and I will say one more time…I knew personally a double murderer, a man who ended up on death row in the state of WA…doubledated with him…does that make me guilty by association? The other candidates have had shady people in their lives, too…are they guilty by association? I don’t get it…I suppose…but…I know that you will feel the way you feel no matter what . Do you also feel that way aobut Hillary? She had some friends, etc, etc that she was associated with…remember Whitewater? being investigated? does that make you trust her less? or does that not matter to you one way or the other? (don’t everyone jump on me – lol..I’m just askin’)

NR..I realize that this is probably the wrong thread for this discussion…I just want you to know I didn’t ask those things for a debate. we can do that in the McCain thread, I suppose. I didn’t want to know about McCain’s plan. I want to know what my peers think when they say less taxes, no more taxes, etc, etc…

You’re right…McCain didn’t specifically say that military service should be a requirement…but he did bring up the subject, and alluded to things. And you’re correct in telling me that he didn’t say that. Just as…it’s correct that Hillary Clinton never said that she wanted to stay in the race because something may happen in June, remember RFK. See how that works? Everyone is so happy to jump (not you, NR…I’m using the universal everyone)onto an allusion as a fact…yes, defending Hillary here. And the same happens with Barack Obama…an illegal Real estate deal? did he get in trouble? was he arrested? punished for it? who said it was “illegal”..? Is there proof that it was illegal? (maybe simply it wasn’t prudent?)

as JoB has said many times…it politics…it’s dirty…it’s the way it is. I don’t like it…but I’m told I have to accept it …stinks, doesn’t it?

I was not making any judgment about educational standards or who is succeeding or not. I asked a simple question about which is more important.

The motivation behind my question was the distinct lack of empathy and understanding displayed by someone whose self-described goal is to be employed in a field which requires… yes, empathy and understanding.

“Empathy” does not mean “not complaining” or even “not criticizing”. But it does mean showing some amount of understanding of how others’ lives may be different from theirs, and how what appear to be simple choices from this person’s perspective may not, in fact, be simple choices from someone else’s perspective.

I completely agree that the WASL is whack and needs to be fixed. But I am more alarmed by the unflinchingly sophomoric attitude of this young person, especially when they say they want to have a career helping people.

One can, and in my mind *should*, still have empathy even while one is saying that a system is broken and needs to be changed. This person has shown none.

I understand why they are being interviewed it is because of Renzi. And considering that Renzi (shady association)was on his campaign and McCain never actually removed him from his campaign(yes Renzi had to resign because McCain would not remove him) is one of the many reasons why I do not and will not support McCain.

    Oh for heaven’s sake!!!!

This person is witness to, everyday at school, their personal educational standards being lowered to allow for a less educated person to succeed.

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with having *empathy*!!!

To this person, his/her education is THE most important thing.

JanS – It is entirely possible that I missed something, but when did McCain *decide* that military service was a requirement for running for President?

Sure, he will use the fact that Obama never served, of course he will, but I don’t think he ever stated that it was a requirement.

I will answer your questions, JanS, but not to argue.

You do not agree with me and I already know that. I have pointed out that I do not trust Obama and absolutely nothing anyone says on here will change that opinion.

I am not answering your questions to start a debate. We will see if I can answer your question without being attacked.

I do not trust Obama because he has too many suspicious associations. These are associations I am extremely uncomfortable with in todays day and age.

He has been involved in illegal real estate transactions.

He not only attended, but had a close personal relationship for over 20 years, with an extremely racist Reverend.

His wife has stated publicly that she does not like this country (or, I guess never has until her husband was running for President)

He is a hypocrite. He preaches one thing and practices another.

He does not want to fund the military for or attain advanced weaponry. He would rather the troops learn languages.

He does not have enough experience to deserve the trust of the American people. If he were white, he would not be in this position (that is racism in itself, and only hurting the minority) Do you realize how many white Senator’s are just as or even MORE qualified than Obama?

And, lastly, he is a Democrat.

As far as how the debt we are in will get paid, more specifically I think what you are asking is, how will McCain handle that.

It’s real simple. You can go to his website and read where he stands on every issue. You can read about his plans. That is what I did with Obama. But, I think it’s safe to say that not even half of you have ever looked at McCain’s site or his plans.

So tell me… is it more important for this person to “think for himself” (or herself) and achieve academic goals, or is it more important for this person to have empathy and understanding of those whose life experience has been different from theirs?

I can’t believe you people are coming down on this person!

I think this member is extremely intelligent and, more important, actually CARES about his/her education.

Because he/she lives and breaths the actual lowering of standards, he/she sees it everyday, and then you people tell him/her that he/she doesn’t know what he/she is talking about sounds a little elitist to me.

Caduceus – I hope that you continue your education and achieve your goals. Please, please continue to think for yourself! It is extremely powerful.
