KayleighMemberI thought I was the only one who found stuff at Thriftway to be overpriced. I rarely shop there. Same with PCC and Met Market.
I get most everything at either the Jefferson Square or Roxbury Safeways…and the cool interesting stuff at Trader Joe’s in Burien or Madison Park.

KatherineLParticipantI’m surprised at the comments about Admiral Safeway. Anytime I compare prices with Met Market, Safeway usually comes out cheaper. I mostly shop there because I get my meds there. The pharmacy people are great. And it’s right there between the library and PCC. As for PCC, yeah, it can be more expensive although if you’re a member you can shop on discount days. But remember, you’re not getting a bunch of extras (i.e.; carcinogens) in your food at PCC. PCC’s main idea is to get healthful food to the people and to support local food growers in the process. Safeway, Thriftway, Metropolitan Market – their bottom line is the bottom line.

I am surprised no one has mentioned Tony’s for produce! That place rocks. I am going to have to check out cash and carry for the next BBQ for sure.

HuindekmiParticipantI spread my shopping around a bit, getting various items from the stores that do them best. This strategy was reinforced by an experience I had at the Admiral Safeway one day.
I was picking up a bunch of basics there, but was also planning on making a nice pasta recipe for that evening. To save a little time and energy, I decided to see if I could get everything I needed there. One item I needed was some thick sliced pancetta. The following conversation ensued at the Safeway deli counter.
Me: <scanning the case looking for pancetta>
Deli Clerk: May I help you?
Me: Yes. I would like to get some pancetta.
Deli Clerk: Cheddar?
Me: No. Pancetta.
Deli Clerk: Cheddar. You need cheese?
Me: No. Pancetta. It’s Italian cured ham.
Deli Clerk: Cheddar isn’t ham. It’s cheese.
Me: Nevermind.
I stuck to the basics and went across the street to the Met Market for the rest of the ingredients. :)

charlabobParticipantOK, the best search can’t help me — but you guys can: A while back someone mentioned a family-owned grocery (Italian). I think the person who mentioned it actually worked there, and other chimed in about how good it was. What was it?
I *love* Tony’s — and the WS Farmers’ Market — which will be the closest place to get Herban Feast goodies now that they’ve moved.
The longer we stay on our month of Atkins, the more I want the veggies and the fruits, and, of course, bread and cupcakes — except they’re never coming back.

SueParticipantI don’t know – as a New Yorker, I think pancetta and cheddar are prounounced essentially the same, so I can understand the confusion. :)

PSPSParticipantThe West Seattle Safeways are shadows of their former selves when it comes to the employees. The Jefferson one was the first to go bad, and now I’m seeing the same thing happen at the Admiral one. They treat the customers like cattle — indifference, suspicion and contempt seem to be part of their training now. It got so bad that I always go to Thriftway now. The prices aren’t higher unless you’ve fallen for the “Safeway Club Card” scam, but I’d pay more anyway just to avoid the gauntlet of Safeway trolls. It will be a happy day indeed when we get more grocery alternatives in West Seattle, like a Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods.

JeraldParticipantI’ve never had a problem with the Jefferson Sq. Safeway staff. If anything, they’re too helpful, always asking if I need assistance. I think that’s a company policy.
Those workers are part of our West Seattle community too and I feel bad when I hear them insulted.

AlkiParticipantHey! When we talk about “pimping” our grocery store, how about not using plastic bags anymore and requesting/demanding items that aren’t made with the hard plastic (that plastic will be around for 15 generations after we die)!
To me, that’s “pimping” our grocery stores and I think we should all be demanding more sustainable solutions for our shopping needs. ;)

I’ve written to manufacturers to make suggestions about packaging – like today I bought a product that used to come in a cardboard box but now comes in a plastic container I can’t recycle, so I wrote to them. And I have a trunk full of reusable bags that I take everywhere.

CMPParticipantI stopped by Cash & Carry in SODO today for the first time ever. All I can say is…interesting. They sell a lot of food in bulk so if you’re not buying for a crowd, don’t bother. I also didn’t find savings to be that substantial, except for certain items like flavored syrups for coffee. Huge selection of those and they’re only about $3.50 each.
I like all grocery stores, especially if they have good sales. I don’t think I’ve ever considered any employees (Safeway, Thriftway, etc…) to be rude, but the Jefferson Square Safeway parking lot leaves much to be desired. I can’t believe the DPD ever approved that. Oh wait, I can, given all of the other crap I see built around here :)

idlerParticipantThe Admiral safeway checkers could use a little customer service brush up to say the least. Full disclosure, I usually shop at Morgan Thriftway for many reasons. But, one day last month I was in the North end killing time during my kids piano lessons and I stopped in at Safeway. First of all, when I approached the check out stand with my cart about half full of groceries and started unloading them…a woman with a hand carried basket full of stuff entered the lane from the exit side and plopped her basket down in front of me. The checker did not skip a beat she without a word began checking that lady out. How rude. I didn’t bother to say anything because it was clear the point would be missed on this dim wit. But what happened next was astounding. A very nice woman with two sweet, well behaved children and cart overflowing got in line behind me. By this time the rude line cutter lady was done and gone. The checker ignoring me but beginning to check my groceries looked past me at the nice mom behind me and snapped at her “paper or plastic”. I mean no hello or how are ya. The nice mom behind me now calmly unloading her cart onto the conveyor belt said gently “OH both please”. The checker still checking me out did not look up or vocally acknowledge this woman (or even me still) she simply handed me my receipt and mumbled thanks. So meanwhile the nice mom repeats herself”OH both please” And then the most amazing thing happened. The checker looked up at her and shouted “I HEARD YOU” I took my groceries and my receipt and walked out of there stunned.

JPParticipantIt makes me so sad, to hear about Admiral Safeway. I worked there for 35 years, and did my best to make my customers happy! I do know that it’s not the same, but I will be up there…kicking them in the butt.
