KayleighMemberJoB, thinking further…
I think we need to have an open and frank discussion on class in this country without people like Hillary calling others “elitist” at every turn. If we don’t start calling on the working class to vote *for* their economic interest and to think better of the “eggheads” that are trying to help them, aren’t we helping keep the working class down?
If we don’t get higher levels of college education in this country, how are we going to bring more people into living wage jobs? It may be tragic that manufacturing jobs are vanishing, but it’s a fact, and I think it will get worse rather than better. Is it elitist to come out and say, “Dude, get your kids into college so that they know how to do something else.”?
This is where democrats, both Hillary and Obama supporters, actually agree: we value education and living wage jobs. In fact, we actually agree on a *lot*, and if you read Matt Taibbi’s piece, you might concur with him that this primary race stopped being about politics and has become about image and projection and identity and redemption.

KenParticipantIf you want quality and don’t mind quantity, go to Cash and Carry downtown on 4th ave.
They sell “Packers cut” wet aged beef and pork. Cut your own steaks and freeze.
This is the same steak you will be served in most restaurants. Their Angus rib-eye is great and usually around 5.50 a pound.
Those who smoke or bar-b-que cannot get better price and quality on whole brisket or pork shoulder. As far as I know, Thriftway and the small Safeway’s don’t even carry any butchers cut size pork or beef suitable for smoking.
As far as Safeway goes, I go to roxbury since I can park and the aisles are wide enough for two carts to pass. I cannot shop at Jefferson square since I am neither a midget nor on Prozac.
Since the GF is a DBA, we compare prices every couple of years. Safeway is by far the cheapest for the specific items we buy regularly.
Thriftway has some specials occasionally and is right down the hill, but is almost as insane as Met market on regular grocery items.
Costco and Tony’s market fill in the spaces on specific items that are either unavailable from regular stores or deeply discounted in quantity.
The day I care what someone in any store is wearing will be the day I beg my family to shoot me and bury me in the back yard.

KayleighMemberJan, y’all are in my neighborhood all the time…and I don’t bite. Well, I don’t bite much. Or hard. And when I do bite, I feel bad afterward and apologize. ;-)
The idea that Rachel Ray is a jihadist sympathizer is funny, JT, the more I think about it. I admit I had no idea what a keffiyeh was or what it supposedly symbolized. I googled but came up with all kinds of different info on it.
But she’s a TV chef, for heaven’s sake, a perpetually chirpy one at that. If she *were* a secret terrorist sympathizer, would she *really* have bragged about it on a Dunkin Donuts commercial? I mean, it would kinda blow her cover.

WSBKeymasterHi all, WRT Admiral Safeway, it’s not grapevine, it’s indeed a plan that it will be torn down and the site will be redeveloped (having a big ground–level parking lot is apparently way passe’).
Nothing formal filed yet but the developers have been to the Admiral Neighborhood Association – this is our report from last month:
https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=6789
including throwing out to the WSB world their question about “what do you want to see?”
ANA canceled its May meeting but we’ll be at the June meeting and guessing some kind of update will be available — TR
p.s. on the West Seattle Thriftway, which we too agree is an eternal improvement over the pre-fire version (will never forget coming back from a vacation in March 1997 and doing a triple-take to see the smoldering rubble), they have an excellent website – note the “new product request” feature:

JeffroMemberOf all the safeways I semi-regularly visit the ranking is something like: SeaTac > Renton > Admiral > Junction > U-district. Anyone that thinks that Admiral is the worst should take a little field trip over to the U district, it’s a total time warp. Hopefully when Admiral safeway does their makeover they get the idea to restock the broccoli and spinach when they run out. The staff has always been great, not to mention that my friends and I are totally mystified by one checker in particular.
Metropolitan Market lures me in with the cheap high-quality produce and those coupon mailers, and before I know it I’m picking up all kinds of stuff. It’s also becoming one of my favorite places to eat lunch. The soup is to die for.
Pcc I really want to like because it’s so close to me, but I’m always put off by the prices, though I do enjoy walking past their cooking classroom. I’ve always liked the Thriftway since it’s kind of a step between Safeway and Metropolitan, and I’d probably go there more if it were closer to me.

CaduceusMemberYeah JT I understand.
Especially after reading that Thriftway topic, where two people made good-natured jokes and both mis-understand each other’s motives.
But it is rather obnoxious to attempt to be condescending because they assume I’m naive and ignorant simply because they made a mistake in their comprehension of what I said.
I retaliated a bit and that may have been inappropriate but I’m only 17! Hahahah. :]

AnonymousInactiveCaduceus, I don’t know enough about this topic to weigh in, but I think it’s great that a 17 yo is on here holding your own. It can be difficult to not take things personally, and words often sound harsher in print than in person. Don’t let that discourage from participating. Most of us are pretty decent, we just get passionate sometimes.

JanSParticipantoh, and if any store needs “tartin’ up” it’s the Adm. Safeway. I have heard through the grapevine that they plan ( not in the immediate future) to tear down completely, and rebuild…with whatever else they want to rebuild with it. I know that they’re supposed to present something to the Adm. Neighborhood Assn’…does anyone know if they’ve done that yet?
May 29, 2008 at 5:54 am #625516In reply to: Pimp My Grocery Store
JanSParticipantI guess I’m one of the few that shops at Admiral Safeway (although it sure does seem packed to me at times – hmmm). Actually, I live across the street from Adm. Safeway, so there’s a reason to go there for certain things…shop the sales, etc. And…I live about 1/2 block form Met Mkt…..so I can take advantage of that , too…..and then….I live about 1 1/2 blocks from PCC…love to shop there for bulk items…rice, quinoa, organic steel cut oats, and the best cinnamon this side of…well, wherever the cinnamon comes from.
I do venture at times down to Thriftway when I feel like it…haven’t done that lately…may have to when I can drive again…

CaduceusMemberI’ll just quote myself a few times since some of you have made some silly comments that I’ve already addressed, I’ll also correct your misconceptions because of your condescension on me being young .
Hopey said: “Which 23 year old do you think makes more money: a fresh college graduate, or the person who spent three or four years apprenticing to become a power line worker?”
I previously said: “Now not to say you’re screwed without a college degree a lot of people get by just fine and live comfortably,”
Hopey also said: “You’ve got quite a chip on your shoulder there, Caduceus. I am glad you are accustomed to being the top of the heap.”
My response: Of course I have a chip on my shoulder, I came from a bankrupt family who moved 2-3 times a year and I managed to learn how to read, I managed to comprehend basic math, I managed to learn how to grasp the English language , etc. That doesn’t make me an amazing genius, that just means I’m not mentally challenged.
If you cannot read in high school.
If you cannot grasp the concept of positive and negative numbers in high school.
If you aren’t sure what the difference between “your” and you’re” is in high school.
You do not belong in high school. You should be tutoring in all of your free time, you should paying 100% attention not talking about how awesome Grand Theft Auto was, and how you waited outside for 2 hours to get it before anyone else, etc.
Is it rude for me to look down on someone who is 17, speaks fluent English, is mentally capable and can’t read even though they’ve consistently been in school? No.
The same way it isn’t rude for me to look down on a 10 year old, who can see, who can move their arms and fingers, speaks perfect English, is mentally capable, who can’t do those infant puzzles where you match the shapes to their corresponding slots.
Hopey also says: “College is NOT for everyone. Who do you think maintains our roads, builds our homes and office buildetcetc”
I again, already said: “Now not to say you’re screwed without a college degree a lot of people get by just fine and live comfortably,”
Hopey, in case you missed it the first few times, the key word in that quote is “A LOT”.
(have decided that individual quotes will take forever)
My –>entire<– point was people with special needs are beside what I’m trying to say since obviously they are an exception. You can’t compare a perfectly well student with someone with a severe mental issue, or someone who is blind, or someone who can’t speak English.
Which is WHY I’ve been steering away from that subject, yet you all somehow missed it even though it’s common sense.
I love how many times “naive”, “ignorant”, “elitist”, “young” (equivalent to ignorant in context) has been thrown around then quickly followed by an uproar of miscommunication! Oh the irony!(That, was me being condescending and an elitist.)
It isn’t that it was easy for me, it’s that the tests and high school in general are easy, period.
Like walking, and breathing. Those are easy things.
Like reading and comprehension. (ironically this thread lacks a lot of that.)
And yet to further exemplify my point that you all missed many times over is that a person who has no legs cannot walk, therefore they are an exception. The same way someone who is blind or cannot speak English cannot read English.
I shouldn’t have to point that out because it’s COMMON SENSE.
Which is why I asked that we not get into the subject of ESL and the like.
You guys, are hilarious. Thank you for the awesome read. (That was also elitism, since you all apparently need some examples as to what it is.)
And yes, I was consciously being a dick as this post progressed because you guys seem to make a point to get all flustered over nothing anyhow. I mean really, I’m 17, don’t you guys have better things to do then totally mis-understand things I post on the internet? And then attempt to break my morale with your sad attempts at condescending maturity?
Granted you all made some valid points, but some of you need to take your own advice and stop trying to argue over the internet about something that has already been addressed whether directly and you somehow missed it or because it was common sense.

JanSParticipantAim…I love the flash frozen fruit…it makes great “ice cream” in the Vita-mix, too. Instead of yogurt sometimes, add silken smooth tofu…gives it a nice consistency…:)
I’ll have to try blueberries and mango – yummmmm…so when exactly will those blueberry bushes be ready to produce, Erik? I may just have to make a sneaky trip down the hill…

SueParticipantwsChic, we found our rental house on Craigslist and got really lucky that it was the first place I called and we got it. At that price point, she should be able to find something here in WS though, however the dog might be a problem – most apartments seem to limit dogs to under 50 (or 25) pounds. My recommendation is that she should NOT rent at West Ridge Park or any property run by Allied Management – as soon as that management company took over the place went to hell and the rents went through the roof, while services diminished.

JiggersMemberHahahaha… everyone here knows that I’ve been trying to find a place to rent for awhile that’s cheaper than what I’m paying now which is obscene for a 660 sq ft studio $875. You have to know someone or take your chance with a weirdo, or pay an obnoxious amount if you want to live alone. Portland is cheaper than here. I don’t understand why she wants to move to a wetter more expensive climate.

May 29, 2008 at 4:41 am #625555In reply to: Smoothie Time!!
AimParticipantI’m a huge fan of smoothies.
Trader Joe’s or Cash n Carry for bags of flash-frozen fruit without sweeteners, Fred Meyer or Target for whey protein powder, and the rest is regular old Safeway.
I use:
1-2 cups frozen fruit. I love to combine blueberries and mangos
1/2 cup plain nonfat yogurt
1 scoop whey protein
splash of water as it’s blending to loosen it up if it gets too thick.
Occasionally I add a tsp of honey or a sprinkle of splenda if I want more sweetness. Or I just add half a banana.
